In keeping with serious threads on this board, here is another serious topic.

Here is how I see it - Why are some people so precious about smoking? On my way home tonight, some evil, evil woman told me to go away and smoke somewhere else, while I was waiting for the train. Open air enviroment. I was there first. If she didn't like it, why couldn't she bugger off elsewhere? Being the person I am, I obliged, and went around the corner. However, I'm sick of being pushed around by precious little people who can't bear the sight or smell of cigarette smoke.

There's my rant.

That is what ****es me off about some non smokers, I light up away from people, then some anti smoking person decides to invade my space & tell me not to smoke, HELLO moron, go & stand where my smoke won't bother you.

I am lucky, my boss is an ex smoker but isn't one to object to others smoking, I am allowed to smoke at work, as long as it is in the kitchen or ladies room where there are extractor fans to take the smoke away, so the smoke doesn't stink up the office.

Maybe not. But I was there first. She only came along 5 minutes later. These people tend to think they can push us around as if we are second rate citizens. Luckily for this particular woman, I was in no mood to kick up a fuss.

If passive smoking was true, we would all be dead, because up until 15 years ago we were constantly exposed to smoke, sorry but it is all scare mongering by the anti smoking lobby.

Sure some people get cancer from smoking, but I have had friends die from lung cancer who have never smoked, never gone to places like bars where they would be exposed to smoke.

Point is some people will get cancer & others won't, smoking & bad diet will make it happen quicker to people who would get it anyway.

If someone lights up then I'll just walk away...simple as that. I really don't like it but I'm not going to ask someone to stop if I can move away from them.

I went on a bucks weekend Labour day long weekend.
Out of 25-30 guys we had ZERO smokers.
Wouldn't have happened 10 years ago and still doesn't happen on the female side.

True. I know ALOT more girls than blokes that smoke. I'm actually one of two in my fairly large group of friends.

had the similar thing last week. Went to my first non-smoking house party. I woke up the next day feeling so much better than normal, if you can feel good after 17 cans of beer & 5 hours sleep?

I know where you're coming from Daics - but someone who feels strongly enough about it to come up to you and tell you to put it out probably isn't being precious.... the smell makes some people feel sick, maybe they suffer from asthma, have a baby with them, or are just generally looking after their health.

I smoke like there's no tomorrow - but if someone asks me to put it out (for whatever reason), I will.

Westy I put my cigarette out too if I am somewhere that the non smoker can't escape my smoke, but when a non smoker deliberatley comes & stands next to me when they don't need to & tells me to put it out, I tell them to heck off.

Precisely. This particular old hag came up to me when she got on the platform, and bitched to me. Didn't ask politely, just generally bitched. As I said, I wasn't in the mood to argue, so I jus walked off. But if I felt any different.....

Were you smoking before she got there? If you were then she's in the wrong, but if you weren't then I think she was right...

Personally I hate the smell of cigarette smoke, absolutely hate it, and with a strong family history of lung cancer and some kind of allergy to the smoke, I'll avoid smoking areas as much as possible. And to be honest it shlts me beyond belief when someone lights up near me, but I don't have the guts to say anything so I leave...

I know its an arrogant and patronising view, but I honestly don't understand why people -young people in particular- smoke now that so many problems have been associated with it.

And there's my rant. (A hugely shortened version actually ;))

Yeah, I lit up about 2 mins before she got there, but I had been standing around there for a few minutes.

I understand what you are saying, and I would NEVER light up in a packed enviroment. But in this instance, I was alone on the platform until she came and told me to go away.

In that case she was wrong in my opinion :) There's a balance between looking after your health and being a condescending prick. :)

ah how rude! if i was in your position i wouldnt be happy either, that use to irritate me so much when i smoked, but then again, now that i dont smoke i find the smell of it really gross

I agree with ya.

I suffer from asthma and I cannot go anywhere near cigarette smoke.
Smoking should be banned all over the world.

Unfortunately that will never happen. I hate cigarette smoke and guess what... I also hate cigarettes! ;)

If someone lights up near me I don't complain, I try to be polite about it but also giving a hint...eg. waving the smoke away from me - this generally works.

In my opinion I can't see why people would want to smoke.

Should drinking alcohol be banned all over the world? Should driving a car? Nup. Because we have choices. Sure, we should drink in moderation (yah, sure) and drive safely, but if we smokers go where we're told - outside - then people who don't smoke should be more understanding. I mean, we have to sit/stand outside to enjoy our ciggies, and non-smokers have the run of all indoor (and some outdoor) facilities. Smokers contribute more in tax than other groups (I think about 50% or more of the cost is just tax) yet get the least respect.

What gives me the poos is when I go out for a coffee in the evening, quite happy to sit outside and smoke, and non-smokers pull up at an outside table next to me and give me greasys. Stay inside you ****ERS! If I have to sit outside when it's freezing just so I can get my Vitamin N, give me some peace! :p

If you're going to smoke where it doesn't affect other people, then you've got no problem with me.

But when you smoke near me, and my clothes and hair smell like poo, and my eyes water, well then you've got a problem.

Furthermore, smokers who drop butts on the ground or throw them out of their cars give me the sh*ts big time. You lazy bastards: put it in a bin.

There we go: rant over.

I agree. If people want to smoke, fine, do it. As long as it doesn't affect anyone else. But if I have to breathe in the filth and end up with the stink of it in my hair, my clothes etc. then I get nasty.

I honestly can't understand why people want to smoke. There was nothing worse at work than when a smoker would lean over my desk to speak to me after they had just returned from smoking. It stinks!

Funny that there is a smoking thread today. I got chased by smokers all morning!

I was changing platforms at Richmond station this morning and a girl lit up in front of me so I was down wind as we were walking along. I walked really fast to get in front of her even though she was trying to get in front of me! Pathetic, I know, but I hate the smell in the morning!

Then as I left the station a smoker was trying to use the same barrier as me, and I'm going yuk cos I had to walk through the cloud of puff. Then there was someone smoking in the doorway of our building so I have to duck through another cloud to get in the door!

I don't mind people smoking, it's everyone's right to choose, except my parents, I'd kind of like them to be around to see their grand children. But today I just seemed to be in a cloud of smoke from the time I stepped off the train!

If that happens to me, I always reach in my pockets and get out my asthma pump.

It stinks!!!!!!!!!!

If a smoker is considerate and lights up away from people, or lights up where they were first, then the non-smokers have no right to complain, they should move. What I don't like is when smokers light up in a crowded area where there's no where to move, like Flinders st station at peak hour (where there is literally no room to move).

Its all about common courtesy.
