I don't smoke, and it pisses me off that people I work with get a 10 minute break every hour to smoke a cigarette. At the last few jobs I have worked at there have been a large group of people who slack off all the time. Then, when lunch comes round, they get the same break as I do. So, basically, in a day's work, they average about 1hr less work than me, but still get paid the same. I have tried pretending to take smokos, not to actually smoke, but to bludge off and take a break like these guys, but get told to get back to work - that I have no reason to be out there. Is this fair? Why should I work my arse off while they're bludging off and still get paid the same? What rights do these dirty *** suckers have?

^By this reasoning, those non-smokers should get 10 mins off every hour as well then to do whatever they want (as a 'reward') in order to 'improve' their working efficiency to that of smokers like yourself.

Agree?

Nope, i get physically pumped up and it speeds me up (might just be arteries clogging), I don't rest.

unlike some, I can smoke while im actually working.

I hate this approach that the amount of time you spend behind a desk equates to how much or how good your work is. So long as the quality and quantity of work doesn't suffer, what do you or the boss care if they're taking a smoko? Or checking their e-mails?

Much rather someone take a smoko and work hard the rest of the time, than those posers who come in early, stay back late, run around like they're the busiest people in the office, but the quantity/quality of work they produce doesn't measure up to everyone else in the office :thumbsd:

Where I work we have a no-smoking policy. Can't even smell like smoke, so no smokos at all.

That is a large generalisation

You are assuming that quantity and quality have no relation to time.

You're also assuming the quantity and quality of cigarette smokers is more then a non-smokers.

You've taken 2 opposites and tried to make a comparison out of them. On that basis, I'd take a non-smoker who comes in early, stays back late and produces good work over a smoker who spends extra time doing nothing so what they do complete is too rushed or substandard.

this FTW

as long as your work isn't affected, then whats the issue?

Smokers stand outside over the road from where I work. There is always a minimum of 4 people standing there throughout the day.
That equates to 4 people employed to stand outside and smoke 5 days a week by the large insurance company across the road.

I work for a bakery, my boss runs two franchises, so I can work at both. The bakery I usually work at, the work output is a hell of a lot higher than the other one, simply because we do not smoke and they do. We are meant to work for 7.5 hours each day. One of the guys at the other bakery is a frequent smoker and would use up to 30 mins of work time to take smoke breaks throughout the morning...and then still leaves after 7.5 hours, actually only doing about 7 hours work. But if us non-smokers try to leave a half hour early saying we should be entitled to 30 mins off, considering the smokers get out of 30 mins work, all hell breaks loose. What is the difference? We effectively just have one big 30 mins smoko at the end of the day instead of 5 or 6 scattered throughout the morning

all you whingers should just take up smoking and STFU, you dont hear smokers whinging about you guys tossing off in the toilets.

Thats because its the same people :p

You honestly can't be serious though, you actually think people who smoke deserve longer breaks than those who don't?

did he say that?

whats the difference between taking 5 mins for a smoko, than spending 15 minutes getting a soy chai latte from gloria jeans?

obviously 10 minutes of wasted time being queer.

I've worked in offices with a no-smoko policy. Meanwhile, other staff waste at least as much time getting coffee, making and receiving personal telephone calls, and standing around with each other talking shit.

If an employer is going to be a clock Nazi, monitor and eliminate ALL non work-related discussion and activity - and then see how shitty and miserable everyone becomes.

This is exactly how my old man got started smoking.

When he was doing his apprenticeship he used to go out and drink an ice coffee with the other guys while they had smoko but got told he wasn't allowed to have breaks unless he was smoking. So he started smoking.

He promised my Mum (they'd just started seeing each other) that he would quit as soon as he finished his apprenticeship... but 35 years later he's still puffing away addicted as hell.

I recently quit and I can honestly say I don't get any more work done now than I did when I was a smoker. I probably spend more time talking to people and drinking tea (ghey) than I did before though.

How many coffee/tea/get a glass of water/go to the toilet/have a quick look at the paper/have a quick chat to so-and-so/check emails/browse the net/personal phone call/text a friend "minutes" does everyone waste? vs how many times does everyone get in a few minutes early/come back from lunch early/put in a solid effort instead of just plodding along/stay back a bit, or a lot...

Some businesses require a clock-off for breaks, some provide paid breaks for everyone; some ban breaks altogether.

In the end, it's up to the business to find the happy medium between allowing some liberties and being time nazis.

Why single out the smokers?

Nothing. One is shorter but brings back a disgusting smell and breath to the workplace, while the other is longer but heathier.

Both should be banned. Instant coffee is good enough anyway while at work.
