UPDATED MOCK DRAFT POST 2nd LIST LODGEMENT

Thought I would update the mock given the amount of changes at the second list lodgement along with Ball entering the draft. He changes a lot of things and so there are some changes. Like always there are always some players you felt you judged to harshly and some you were overly optimistic on. You'll figure those out for yourselves. There a few that snuck in as well that ultimately i thought were a bit unlucky first time around.

2009 National Draft​

At the start of the year I was really 50:50 on whether I would put the effort into watching as much junior footy this year and then doing a mock. But as the year has gone on its been really interesting because the draft this year is so wide open. Ultimately that’s because the quality is not there as a result of the 17yo’s being out. For me it really tapers off at #25-30.

The mock also reflects that this year I think clubs will do more needs based drafting than previously. Again I think thats because of GC coming but also the evenness of the talent from 30-120. Some blokes are going to be high on a clubs order because of their need where they wont even be in the mix at another club.

There are obviously some players who have been delisted that will go in the National Draft but they don’t have to nominate until Nov 10. To that end I have tried to give an indication of who and at what point but I have coupled them with 18yo’s who would go in the event they go somewhere else including the PSD.


Enjoy the read. As always remember its just a view formed by a bloke who watches a bit of junior footy who enjoys the challenge of putting his rankings down on paper and seeing how they play out over the years. History certainly tells me I should stick to my day job!!

Round 1

# 1 – Melbourne
Tom Scully / Dandenong Stingrays / 182cm / 74kg

Lot of conjecture around who is going to go #1 or # 2 and frankly its irrelevant given Melbourne have the first two selections. In simple terms I am in awe of this kid. Unbelievable player at the clearance and without wanting to put to greater a expectation on him he reminds me of Judd and Ablett insomuch as speed and lateral movement at the contest will be his key attribute. Work ethic is amazing and will run the game out better than most. Shouldnt surprise because since he was 14yo he has been absolutely committed to being AFL player. Left sided kicking is a real feature and its a penetrating kick as well, finishes nicely and has an ability to be a goalkicking midfielder. Just as adept at releasing by hand and will often be there for the handball release and then receive so as to create space and line break. A definite starter for Rd 1 next year and Melbourne fans you should be very very excited. I think the other less heralded thing about this kid is that everyone you speak to speaks volumes for his leadership capability so you are potentially looking at future captain here as well.

Others they may look at: Its only Trengove for mine.

# 2 – Mebourne
Jack Trengove / Sturt / 185cm / 82kg

There is a lot to like about this kid. In many ways he reminds of Buckley when I watch him and more recently like a Gibbs insomuch as it all appears a bit more effortless for them. Grown in stature all season and gone ahead of the Butchers, Morabito’s etc who were probably in front of him earlier in the season. Had a wonderful champs but what will have really excited Melbourne were his performances for Sturt since Rd 15 when he debuted and then moreover in the SANFL finals. Dominated in the Prelim with 25+ touches if memory serves and then was pretty good in the final having had to deal with a pretty heavy tag. Very courageous, has a good attacking mindset and is extremely fit. At the start of the year I had him pegged as more an outside type but I think the biggest improvement in his game has been his inside work. At the champs he was a big contested ball winner and was effective both as a midfielder and HF.

Others they may look at: I don’t think anyone would be in the mix. Maybe Dustin Martin if they felt Trengove was going to be a flight risk at some stage.

# 3 – Richmond
Dustin Martin / Bendigo Pioneers / 187cm / 86kg

Probably the worst kept secret that the Tigers are heavily committed to this kid. Why wouldn’t they be. In years to come this bloke is going to be the ball winner that releases Delidio and Cotchin into open space. Very courageous player who will often take your breath away when seeing the positions he puts his body in. I really like him at the contest and seems to keep his feet when in traffic. Very well skilled on both sides of his body and always seems to make the right decision which suggests his composure is very good and tends to come in handy if he can continue to be a player that takes you into the fwd 50. It was interesting to note that the kicking assessment developed for the Draft Camp had him excelling in which is pretty impressive. In simple terms he is a good guy to be having in possession of the footy.

Others they may look at: I think everyone is pretty certain its Martin but Morabito or Butcher would be the back ups here.

# 4 – Fremantle
Anthony Morabito / Peel Thunder / 192cm / 93kg

This is why these drafts are interesting. This kid is probably my tip for the Rising Star Award in 2010. He is probably the most likely to dominate along with Scully in the first year and overall I probably have him on equal terms with Martin. AFL/AIS graduate who already has a very mature body and is someone with a heap of upside left. Can play a variety of positions but would not surprise to see him rotate through Fremantles midfield from game one. Imposing kid who has a massive influence on the game without getting a heap of the footy. Will win most of the 1:1 contests he goes into. Skills are very good but again it’s his ability to keep his feet in contests and traffic and then make good decisions by hand and foot. The knock on this kid will be that he probably wasn’t as dominant at Colts level and at Champs as some would have thought he might be but I don’t think you can argue with the fact his 20 possessions tend to be more important than the average blokes 20 possession game.

Others they may look at: Assuming the order is as above then I think Morabito is the one they are after. I don’t see Butcher going to Perth and I think you are into the second liners after Butcher. Cunningtons stocks have risen incredibly and he could well land at this pick.

# 5 – North Melbourne
Ben Cunnington / Geelong Falcons / 184cm / 78kg

Fought the good fight trying to mix the order up a little as originally had him falling but his star has only shone brighter and he now looks a lock for North at 5. This kid is seriously good. Notwithstanding Mick Turner thinks every Falcons player is the best he has ever seen he heaped massive praise on Cunnington, particularly around his professionalism and preparation. Very tough kid who really hits the contest pretty savagely tends to keep his feet well. This aspect of his play reminds me of a young Scott Burns and more recently an Aaron Joseph insomuch as they really thrive on physical aspects of the game. Has good pace and is a very efficient user of the pill. Shame that he missed Draft Camp but the word is he could go as high as even #4.

Others they may look at: I think North need a fwd to build themselves around and it would be wise for Scott to do that Yr 1. A key fwd also wont be around at the next pick whereas a good mid will be. Who knows but I will bet Butcher is still a chance here


# 6 – Sydney Swans
Gary Rohan / Geelong Falcons / 186cm / 79kg

This kid is a very fine prospect and could well be the best player that emerges from this draft. Has so much upside in him it’s not funny - and thats physically as well as football wise. I see him as ultimately being a similar player to a Kouta or a Goodes or more recently a little like a Stephen Hill. Will not need many touches to influence a game and with his superior fitness and explosive pace should really burn the opposition. The key will be to get this guy in 1:1 contests where his athletic attributes such as his pace and leap are going to enable him to dominate his opposition. Ball skills are good and is also capable of winning his own ball. The knock on him is going to be does he get enough of the footy? Like an Adam Goodes though – he aint going to need a lot of it to really influence a game though.

Others they would look at: If Butcher was still here I don’t know that Sydney would go for him. They have Mumford and Seaby for the ruck and keen on Bradshaw for a fwd post and have the improving White and Johnstone up forward. I think it will be the middle they will focus on so I would be thinking about Stevens, Lucas, Melksham and Cunnington. If I had to pick one I would think Cunnington or Lucas.

# 7 – West Coast
Lewis Jetta / Swan Districts / 178cm / 72kg

Worsfold has said that he was keen on a very good crumbing forward pre draft and trade. They clearly didn’t do anything in trade week and would think Davis was floated past them so they clearly have still got a need. Whether they deal on that need at pick 7 is up for debate but I’m willing to bet they wont want to wait for this bloke until the next selection as I think Adelaide would definitely pounce if he was still there. Over age kid who has really come on this year. I was thinking more that he would be around the 15-25 range but I got the chance to see his semi final. It was a crap day and the wind was shocking but his ball handling and ball use was just fantastic. I think he kicked 3 goals and I walked away convinced he has something very special. Loads of x factor, very good skills, nice composure and could rotate in the middle or push fwd. He reminds me a lot of Davey in his early years and I think the Eagles have got a gem here. I know a lot of folk are going to say # 7 is to high for a mature player (and I don’t disagree) but the Eagles will know he wont be there at the next pick whereas some good mids and a key position type will be.

Others they may look at: Eagles have always loved their midfielders but I think they have a heap of these kids at present having Hurn, Swift, Ebert, Masten etc all coming through. If they did go for a midfielder Lucas, Sheppard or Melksham for mine. Morabito is a chance to slip so he would be in the mix and Rohan would be obvious if here. More likely to hit someone freakish like Jetta or to go for a tall. Talia would be the logical choice if they went tall, Griffiths has probably got to many question marks to be a selection 7 for me.

# 8 - Port Adelaide
Daniel Talia / Calder Cannons / 195 / 80

Interesting that Port were willing to trade the #8 and #9 picks for Melbournes #2. Tells you two things – 1. They really rate Trengrove and; 2. They think the first 3-5 players are a cut above the 5-10 range. Port have the next selection as well so mute point as to who goes first because I am pretty sure Talia and Butcher are the two. I have gone with Talia because he is probably more adaptable than Butcher in that he could play CHF or CHB and for mine is the slightly better player. To be fair I think he is more a CHB where he seems to like the opportunity to attack the footy and the contest and then run off. He is very athletic, runs all day, has a good dose of contested ball winning capability and will win high possession numbers. Uses the ball well and makes good decisions. Some of his games at the champs will have really caught the eye and I think he will be a bit of bolter come draft day because of the development left. From what I understand is a terrific young kid who is very coachable and I don’t think there is any major issue with Daniels.

Others they may look at: Doesnt matter as they have the next selection. They could go with Butcher or Panos here though and take a midfielder next.

# 9 – Port Adelaide
John Butcher / Gippsland Power / 197cm / 83kg
This kid has certainly slid back a little and there is a feeling its been overblown and that come the 26th he could be at #5 or #6. At champs last year he was a certain # 1 for me – if I had gotten more than $5 fixed odds I would have taken as much as I could. Thankfully TABsports don’t have a market just yet for the NAB draft that far out. By the start of this year I think we all still had him as # 1 but his performances this year just have not progressed at the pace you would hope and thats been coupled with the Scully’s and Trengroves and Martins really coming on. In saying that he went to Champs off the back of injuries so didn’t have the best preparation. He is a terrific athlete whose ability to keep presenting to the contest is going to hurt defenders over many years to come. His contests well at ground level and he is a fine contested mark. The knock will be his disposal efficiency and for those that saw his GF performance for Maffra then you would have seen his worst kicking on display with 1g 7b. It could also be seen to be a very dominant performance against very mature bodies. Ultimately Port will get a forward they can build a forward line around.

Others they may look at: For me definitely one of Talia and Butcher or Panos go here and as I have written I think both will. I also think Port might flirt with the idea of a midfielder here such as Cunnington or Lucas or Melksham and then aim for Panos a little later.

#10 – Essendon
Jake Melksham / Calder Cannons / 182cm / 70kg

I wasn’t impressed with Melksham through the year to the extent I thought he would be top 10 but to be fair he didn’t play much TAC and I think he even had a few niggles. Notwithstanding was a good contributor to the Metro side but really took a shine to him through the TAC finals where I thought his performances in week 1 and then the GF were games where he really. I really rate that in players and look he just dominated that GF. To me there is no doubt he set up that win with his attack at the contest and his clearance work. Only really good players have as much time as he did in what was arguably his biggest game....thats impressive. Similarities to Hayes are frightening. Can play inside or out and always seems to have so much time. I think the standout for me though is the penetration in his kick and then his ability to get the ball to the advantage of his fwd. I love this skill (as an old fwd I guess) because when done well to a 1:1 contest it really puts the defender at a massive disadvantage. Firstly he is going to kick longer than people expect and then he is going to put it to the advantage. He is only light so a little time in the gym will be of great benefit. For mine the Bombers have a real player here and must admit was a little disappointed that Collingwood are no prospect of getting him. I think he suits Essendon as well in that he can play both roles and thats probably what they need more than one or the other. In short, he is a class act!

Others they may look at: Essendon fans always seem to get into me for picking the wrong bloke and this year I suspect they will be screaming for Lucas. Remember its only my view and I agree it is a roughie but I think Melkshams the one because he offers that ability to change a game. But its hard to split Melksham, Lucas and Stevens for mine. Suspect closer to draft date we will have a sense of it.

# 11 – Melbourne
Jake Carlisle / Calder Cannons / 196cm / 83kg

Very flexible player in that he could ultimately play CHF or CHB. Very agile kid and has a really strong pair of hands in the marking contest. Like a lot of the taller kids these days is also very adept when the ball hits the ground and can also run off the contest to provide an option. The knock on him for me is that he probably hasn’t found a level of consistency insomuch as I think he can drift in and out a bit. In saying that, its a big ask for tall kids to do that at junior level. In short though he is a very exciting prospect and a great option for the Dees to develop a 10 year key position player for either CHF or CHB

Others they would look at here. I think the obvious one would be either Griffiths or Fitzpatrick. Griffiths because he is a specialist fwd and Fitzpatrick because he could play fwd/ruck which would be a neat choice for the Dees.

# 12 - Carlton
Aaron Black / Peel Thunder / 193cm / 80kg

Carlton will surely be looking to rebuild their forward line. Henderson is a talented addition but to be fair the stocks are pretty thin. Surely they must go tall here, the only reason they wont is because they don’t rate whose left. Has come a long way from Colts to being super impressive late in the year at senior level. If this was a horse race you would swear it was fixed....thats how much this bloke has come in. Can play forward or back but for mine CHF will be where he settles. Very athletic and has a massive leap on him. He is a fine mark and his skills are very good as well. Will get around the park well so will be a hard matchup in years to come.

Others they may look at: I think if Panos, Carlisle or Talia were here then their player numbers would be read very quickly. If they are all gone then Fitzpatrick or Griffiths would come into contention. I cant see it being a mid unless they simply don’t rate whats left. The obvious mid would be Cunnington at this stage.

# 13 – Adelaide
Kane Lucas / East Fremantle / 188cm / 79kg

I think they will see the AFL/AIS graduate Lucas still here and not allow themselves to let him past as he is the best player still available. Has been a terrific performer for two years now and arguably deserves top 7-10 placement. Great physique for a midfielder and is a very professional footballer. Ticks a lot of boxes around contested ball, decision making, execution, agility (in fact tested in the top 7 of all time at DC) , strength etc and will definitely play AFL footy for mine. I think the knock is probably just around the amount of x factor he brings to the table and his ability to really influence games of football.

Others that might be considered: I don’t think Lewis Jetta will get past here. Crows have everything covered but a quick nippy small fwd who has x factor and can put pressure on when the ball is going the other way. Ruck is the one area they may look at so Vardy would be a roughie here as well. Maybe the local lad Tapscott appeals or even Panos to add to their fwd power but they have done much good recruiting here so not as sure about a KPF.

# 14 – Sydney Swans
Matthew Panos / Norwood / 193cm / 85kg

I think we all find a player in the draft that we just really like for whatever reason. Mine is this fella. I just love a tough aggressive key position forward and this bloke has all those qualities in bucket loads. Very fit fella who keeps on presenting all day and is prepared to hurt blokes in the marking contest. Seen a bit of him and just love the way he hits the pack and sends the opposition defenders scattering. Can play either FF or CHF – played more CHF at champs but I saw him play FF and preferred him there. Had a really good champs and form has been good at the local level as well. From memory he was the leading goal scorer at the champs with 14-or 15 and was deadly accurate. He really does remind me of a Matt Pavlich as a junior albeit I don’t think he will develop the tank Pavlich ultimately did. Interestingly I think he is a real team player as well. Brings others into the game and is always talking on the field and leading by example. The knock on him is he probably can only play forward but to be fair I’m not sure that has been tested to often and anyway, John Butcher is in the same boat. I think he is a bloke that could seriously drift in the order though and would be rapt if he was a live at #30!

Others they may look at: If Carlisle was here he would have to be in the mix as a key defensive option for future years – especially given they went with midfielder first. Griffiths another but I would think someone that can play back is preferred. I have gone with Panos because having already got midfielder in Rohan they can get another KPF to replace Hall and OLoughlin. If a midfielder you could name any of Stevens, Bastinac, Moore, McMillan-Pittard, Melksham who may still be here, Sheppard, Duncan etc etc.

# 15 – Western Bulldogs
Ben Griffiths / Eastern Ranges / 198cm / 99kg

Griffiths might surprise a few as a little early and ultimately got the nod because I don’t think we have seen the best of him yet and the potential is enormous if the injuries stay away. One of his champs games I was at he kicked 5 goals in the first half I think and the recruiters next to me were incredibly excited about ‘what could be’. He is a very athletic tall and is suited to CHF but could play FF as well as pinch hit in the ruck. Very good at the contest and for such a big lad is very good below his knees. The real standout feature though is the leading and the fact he is very hard to stop when the ball is out in front. The other real standout feature is the bloody kick on him......its Brownless esque!

Others they may look at: Surely they take a tall here don’t they. If not then Lucas, Stevens, Bastinac would be in the mix but its more likely to be a different tall. Aaron Black would surely be thought of if here as would Carlisle and Jack Fitzpatrick would have to be in the mix as well.

# 16 – Port Power
Koby Stevens / Gippsland Power / 186cm / 78kg

CV reads very well, Country rep, AFL/AIS graduate, Member of TAC Cup Team of the Year and ticks a lot of boxes around tough at the footy, wins contested footy, huge tackler, keeps his feet, uses the pill really well, good enduarance, high workrate, pushes forward etc. Another that I am surprised has fallen to here and again one who I think is more likely to go before now rather than drop even further. In short this kid will leave nothing on the paddock. Cant think of anything that is a big issue with him so a very nice get at # 16.

Others they may look at here: All depends on what happens at #9. If they hit a midfielder there like Melksham or Lucas then they would be hoping a tall such as Griffiths, Carlisle, Fitzpatrick, Black etc were here. Wouldnt rule out a ruck here but didnt go for one because they have a heap of youngsters.

# 17 – Geelong
Ryan Bastinac / Dandenong Stingrays / 183cm / 74kg

This kid is pretty similar to Stevens in many ways. He really excels at the clearance and would be considered more an inside mid than out. In saying that I think he is proficient at both aspects but the work over the ball at the clearance is his real feature. Hits it hard, keeps his feet and uses it really well. I think one of his best games for the year was in the TAC GF where he got Dandenong back into the game through his centre clearance work. Was really outstanding and showed he can influence a game which I think recruiters really like seeing in big games. The other thing about this kid is the engine. He is only light but he goes all day and when that size comes he will be a really formidable player for the Cats. Reminds a lot of a Joel Corey / Corey Enright type player. He is a good get.

Others they may look at: They would be keen on a Stevens but he and Bastinac are pretty close in my view. Maybe a Duncan or Sheppard appeals or more likely a quality tall that could be groomed along with Brown for the future. If that was the case one of the fellas above may fall or a Fitzpatrick could be an option given the Cats love a bolter and someone they can develop. I think the most likely alternative is Nathan Vardy or Jack Fitzpatrick given the loss of Mumford, and West as the only long term back up to Blake.

# 18 Melbourne
Nathan Vardy / Gippsland Power / 198cm / 92kg

Not much doubt in my mind he is the best ruck prospect in the land, but in saying that I think the stocks are pretty thin and its almost impossible to get a sense of where they land. I think Melbourne could do with a quality ruck to feed the Scully’s, Trengroves, Mortons, Blease’s etc and now is the time to strike. They have an abundance of good young mids and it would be negligent to not target a quality ruck prospect to feed them. Vardy is a nice height, has a really good leap on him and sensational tap work which in years to come should serve all those mids very well. He is very competitive and can take a strong mark. His work on the ground is good and he has a heap of upside. I think the knock is just consistency (which is hard for young rucks) and maybe a bit of work rate. The modern rucks like Kruezer and NicNat are just a bit more agile than what this bloke is going to be but don’t get me wrong he is very promising.

Others they may look to: Fitzpatrick is the obvious choice if not Vardy. I had Vardy behind Fitzpatrick but the reality is you cannot ignore Fitzpatricks form has tapered and hence they have flipped positions. Luke Ball is the other selection here that would be thought of.


# 19 Richmond
Allen Christensen / Geelong Falcons / 175cm / 72kg

Allen is an interesting one. Highly talented but I guess I have just been missing his best games. I also have some reservations about players of his height being taken so early and fear he could go late, but the reality is this bloke is good and the good judges have him up there. Can play mid and fwd and is really good around the contest. Gets a heap of footy including winning his own ball and can play outside and provide burst. Good lateral movement and awareness and skills are very good – but not elite IMO. The aim will be get him in the midfield but I worry his height will preclude him from doing that (do people notice Sam Mitchell is not 6ft?). Not to worry a HF Flank or pocket will be enough to see this bloke as handy selection at #19 where his hunger, creativity and lead up will ensure he is a handful for defenders.

Others they may look at: I think there is a chance he could fall to 30-40 and if that happened then a Sheppard appeals here as a type Hardwick will love. Notwithstanding they have Vickery I think Vardy and Fitzpatrick would come into contention if the other talls are all gone.


# 20 – Fremantle
Brad Sheppard / East Fremantle / 187cm / 78kg

I think Fremantle would be pretty keen to land a good tall here but the reality is they are running out pretty quickly in this draft and would have to wait a bit longer or compromise not taking the best kids. Sheppard is a class act and finished off the year very strongly. Great size and speed for a future midfielder who will probably play HB early and from all reports is very committed to his football. Had a really good champs and has played good footy at WAFL level as well. Doesn’t have a heap of x factor but is going to be one of those blokes like Hayes who just excels at the contest and winning his own ball. Very strong overhead and his execution is in the elite category as well.

Other they may look at: Duncan is the obvious local talent whilst a couple of SA kids in Carey and Tapscott would appeal around here. Fitzpatrick would be the tall here.

# 21 – North Melbourne
Mitch Duncan / East Perth / 187cm / 81

Well there is no doubt North value something around here having given up #30 along with the talented Sharrod Wellingham who Scott had in his midfield group at Collingwood. I would have thought that was a decent trade for # 21 but that assumes North haven’t got something in mind here they really want. My sense is that its a player they know will be here and Duncan could be that option. In short this kid is a class act. Capt WA at u16 level a few years ago, played champs last year and was there again this year performing very well. Can play a variety of spots from HB thru the middle to HF. At times played fwd during the champs whilst rotating thru the middle and was very good. Moves well, makes good decision and his skills would be the in very good category. Scott will like him I suspect because he will hit the pill hard and not leave anything out there.

Others that might be considered here: I wonder if they want Taylor, Tapscott, Thomas or Carey here. Taylor would certainly add some flair but given Butcher has gone then a mid seems a better choice. Colyer is a hard at it type the new coach would like but you like Thomas and Carey I think you would be paying ‘overs’.

# 22 – West Coast
Luke Tapscott / North Adel / 180cm / 86kg

Not sure who goes first here given West Coast have the next two picks but the best player at this point is Tapscott. Massive fan of this kid and have seen him a few times now. He is a very physical player and has the ability to do things on a ground that will change the course of a match. Forget the game but one of his champs games they were in a bit of trouble and he almost single handedly won them the game. He is not your elite footballer but more someone who will win a hard footy and just get it going the right direction. To that end he is great around the contest but he can also be sent fwd and be relied on to kick a goal if he can get 1:1. I would imagine he would be an excellent finals type player.
Others they might think about here: They have the next selection so will worry about it then.

# 23 – West Coast
Troy Taylor / NT / 190cm / 77kg

This guy is set to be one of the stories of the draft. From all reports a terrific kid but has run into trouble as a teenager. Apparently footy has helped him through and had a marvellous championships. Massive amount of x factor and will be groomed for key fwd. In the Jurrah, Motlop type mould of a 3rd tall fwd. Fitness base seems good and keeps on presenting. Can take a terrific mark and his finishing skills are good without being elite. Frame is still a bit wiry but his athleticism will allow him to get out on his own enough times or if in a pack allow him to leap. This guy is just an excitement machine. Could well go even earlier than this.

Others that might be considered here: Wanted a taller type for WC at this pick and ended up with Taylor. Fitzpatrick might be in the mix and I guess Astbury as well. For me its Taylor though because he just has that ‘game winning ability’ that the others haven’t demonstrated yet. If it was another mid then I had Gerrick Weedon slotted here who would be a nice balance between Jetta and Tapscott.


# 24 – Essendon
Jack Fitzpatrick / Western Jets/ 200cm / 85kg

I am a little disappointed in myself with Jack as had him rated a bit higher than this a month or so ago. Suspect he will go higher come draft day because he just offers so much potential. Did some testing earlier in the year with the Western Jets and was one of the quickest over 20m. His height and agility will make him a difficult opponent to match up. Reminds me a lot of Tippett when he was at Southport. Plays ruck or fwd, good with his leap and tap work, strong hands in the contest, gives a second effort and when he fills out will be physically imposing and very mobile around the ground. The knock on Jack is his formline. To be fair its been really average this year. If he had had a good year then I think he would be in the top 10 so in some ways he could be a real bargain here. Another I would be rapt to have at Lexus.

Others they will consider: Having taken Melksham or Cunningston at # 10 then I think a key position fwd to act as back up for Neagle and the injury prone Gumbleton is most needed. If not Fitzpatrick or anybody that I have earlier then the only other one would be Hill or Astbury.


# 25 – North Melbourne
Callum Bartlett / Geelong Falcons / 179cm / 75

Originally had Carey or Crichton here but having just taken Duncan then another similar type aint required. Rather take the exciting Bartlett who notwithstanding sitting out all of 09 wont be forgotten as the draft quality thins out. Exciting prospect who was touted as a top ten chance before the season began. Unfortunately he had a season ending knee injury and so has been off the radar for many. This is where the draft really starts to thin out so to get a quality player like Bartlett who is blessed with pace, skills and ball winning capability is a good get for the Roos. Mostly plays midfield and has goal kicking ability which will attract plenty of interest along with his agility around the packs. Falcons have suggested that if he doesn’t get drafted then a spot for him will be kept open next year. I don’t think that will eventuate and he will go somewhere in the mix around here.

Others considered here: I think one of the reasons why I took Bartlett here was because his type are really thinning out whereas the inside mids are still there in reasonable numbers. If they did take an inside mid it would be Carey, Crichton or maybe Harwood here. If a speedy type then I would be pick Sumner to be a second round bolter. If tall its really only Astbury or Tom Hill....in that order.


# 26 – Essendon
Luke Ball - St Kilda

Given Luke ditched the Saints (which hardly surprised given the way it all unfolded) Luke Ball enters the ND and one of the main reasons for my update. As a Pie supporter I will get shot for not having him at # 30 but frankly not that fussed that Dons are more likely to hit him before us. With McPhee likely to leave then he looks like easily fitting in as long as they want him - and they have said they do!

Others that might be considered here: I think Essendon at some stage are going to try and land a mid / fwd type player. For me thats a Moore or Fyfe etc so they would be the obvious candidates if Ball was passed over. Troy Taylor another they would be keen on for mine.

# 27 – Brisbane
Jesse Crichton / North Launceston / 183cm / 70kg

I often this kid is going to snap in half when I watch him. Terrific player who at seasons start was probably rated in the top 15. Was a super player at last years champs and backed that up again this year with a solid display...........but probably a tad below the level others were hoping for maybe. Plays midfield and is terrific around the contests. Good leap on him and wins a load of the ball with his ability to run and spread. One of the things that stands out for me is that he runs through the corridor and creates options. In the modern game that abilty to spread at pace and find space is very valuable and this kid has that ability. I think there are some queries over his foot skills under pressure but uses by hand exceptionally well. Just needs to fatten up as they say.

Others they might consider here: Inside midfielders (hence the interest in Ball) and small fwds are the go at the Lion Den and Crichton certainly offers that ball winning capability. There are a few around this mark though so guys like Hutchings, Carey or someone above who has slipped. In terms of small fwds I don’t think there are a lot around unless they saw Bartlett as that type or they rated a Hicks much higher than I do.


# 28 – Geelong
Jordan Gysberts / Eastern Ranges / 189cm / 81kg

An AIS- AFL grad who it’s fair to say was probably thought of as a Rd 1 selection at start of the year. Like many of the modern types he is 6ft plus and he can play inside and out. Went on the South Africa trip where his performances were good and that backed up a pretty solid last two years. From memory he was a member of the TAC Team last year as a bottom ager having only played maybe 15 games or so. One of the neat things about Jordan’s game that stands out over others is that he is a very good one touch player, especially given he stands quite tall. Skills very good, makes good decisions and as he showed in the champs can push fwd and kick a goal. The knock on this kid is the x factor component – he is just an honest midfield type who should be a very solid contributor.

Others they may consider here: He strikes me as a Corey type that they probably want to build younger versions of. With Ranga, Motlop, Hogan etc all to come they don’t want for much. I think Gawn going here is the real question as they clearly want a ruck and if they rate him would hit him here before others got to him. Probably paying ‘overs’ but their need is great.


# 29 – Adelaide
Jasper McMillan-Pittard / Geelong Falcons / 185cm / 70kg

Originally had him much lower but have gone back and looked at the vision and am happy to acknowledge I had him wrong. There is a fair bit to work with here and the upside is enormous. Has been highly rated since the start of the year and put some terrific performances together as a running athletic HBF type. He is only a skinny kid but he is quite composed, good decision maker in traffic and with a neat left foot so presents as someone who has plenty of upside at this later selection for the crows.

Others that might be considered here: Was probably after something different than another mid but they do need to replace Edwards, Goodwin etc. Ideally a key position fwd to add to the mix with Tippett, Walker and Burton and co but all would be ‘overs’ here unless something slipped to here thats above. Also thought about Carey.


# 30 – Collingwood
Andrew Moore / Eastern Ranges / 188cm / 81kg

Originally had Carey here and hurts to pass on him as am a massive fan of his ability around the contest. In saying that Moore is a better prospect and has all the elements Hine looks for - very adaptable and very coachable. I have him sliding a bit compared to others. To be fair I just haven’t seen it as others have. Expect to be proven wrong but for me he is a mid to late rd 2. He is another off the Vic production line of 6ft plus flanker / midfielders who can play both inside and out. Will probably start more as a fwd where he has played at junior level but is pretty adaptable and could easily play HB as well. Good ball winner and skills are very good and he tends to make pretty good decisions. The thing that stands out about him is he is very good overhead and he was often used one out up fwd for the Ranges this year. Many liken him to a Ryan OKeefe type footballer but I think he is a bit more pacy. Its interesting though because at Champs the coaches used him behind the ball a lot so maybe thats where he is being seen at AFL level.

Others that might be considered here: I think the draft quality tapers around #25 so anything that’s gone above here would be terrific for the Pies. Realistically one of Fitzpatrick, Griffiths, Bartlett or Carey would be sensational. Thomas is a chance but not convinced he is worth # 30. I would love Carey!


# 31 – Western Bulldogs
Mark Hutchings / East Perth / 180cm / 82kg

Every draft seems to throw up a certain type of player and this year it seems to be inside midfielders. Hutchings is another off the WA production line and frankly little separates him from many of the others above. He is a bit smaller than the others and doesnt have a great deal of x factor (which means he may not go at all unfortuntaley - he is a bit like DeBoer) but he is just your good honest footballer who keeps on trying and never leaving much in the tank. Played league footy last year and his form and development continued this year. Built solidly and wouldn’t be far from being able to play some senior footy in his first year. The knock on him would be his foot skills are probably not as good as some that are before him but he is great at the ball, clears it well by hand and runs all day. Foot skills are ok but he is probably only in the good camp I would say.

Others that might be considered: Sumner strikes me as a bulldog type but with Harbrow playing that role then need to look at something else. Maybe hoping Astbury still around if a tall needed. McMillan-Pittard the other obvious player of quality available as well. If Bartlett slid I could see him here. He is an Eade type.

# 32 – St Kilda
David Astbury / North Ballarat / 194cm / 80kg

Another fella who hasn’t had a heap of coverage but who has terrific claims to be picked up. Like a lot of kids at this stage its a bit of a lottery and probably more so this year in how even the next 60-70 kids are. Astbury should definitely be draft though as he offers terrific upside. Had a fine champs, particularly early, where he showed he can play forward and back. Presents well and has a wonderful contested grab, given he is still pretty light that should get even better when he can use some weight in a marking contest. Might start as a forward as has good pace and finishing skills but ultimately I think he might be a Nathan Bock type who settles as a running CHB. Suspect he could go a bit later but I think in 3-4 years time we might learn he should have gone higher.

Others that might be considered here: I think they will hit best available. Maybe Nat Fyfe or another tall like Hill, Houghton, Donaldson etc. As midfielders go Crichton is an option.

# 33 – Essendon
Travis Colyer / Claremont / 175cm / 73kg

Another of the little fellas who are always hard to get a read on where they might go. Represented WA this year and was just fantastic for them. Wins a heap of the pill and distributes well but for me the x factor is the pace that he can use when he is in the clear. Not sure he would play midfield at senior level but another who could easily fill a back pocket and keep up with some of the smaller, quick fwd pockets in vogue at the moment. In saying that he is a tremendous athlete who excelled at school so has the endurance to play a part in a midfield rotation. Also has played forward at times and I seem to remember him kicking a few goals through the champs and at Colts level so he does offer variety.

Others considered here: I think Hooper, Sumner, Wanganeen would all be names they would be thinking about. Maybe even a Fyfe or Winmar if more medium sized fwds could be on the target.

# 34 Melbourne
Danel Menzel / Central Districts / 185cm / 77kg

Potentially will pass here but if Menzel fell they would have to take him wouldn’t they? Another of the quarter back type players in this years draft. Plays defensive roles around HB or so and I see him as a bit of Josh Drummond type if he can develop as he looks he may. Very good at peeling off and getting behind the ball to take it uncontested and then direct the attacking play from either the last line or HB. Beautiful touch and skills and will hurt with his kick penetration but I do worry as to how much ball he will win himself and thats why I have him a bit further down than I suspect others might.

Others that might be considered here: I like Sumner for the Dees. Josh Thomas would be another who could be around or Alex Carey.

# 35 – Richmond
Alex Carey / Glenelg / 181cm / 79kg

Carey is an AFL / AIS graduate and is a very good cricketer as well. Strong build and very physical player who excels around the contest and is very courageous. Like many others in this draft has really good contested possession capability and his work around the clearances, particularly by hand, are exceptional. Can have a tendency to overplay the release but for the main part is very good. I think the knock on him is how much development is left in him and also whether he has the engine for the midfield at AFL level. Could be a ‘slider’ so am a bit nervous around this pick. If he misses I think GC will put a lock on him with one of their first five selections in the rookie.

Others that might be considered here: Sumner would be good for them and give them some run they lack at the moment. Tom Hill, McDonald, Temel might be a fwd options they would look at here and hope someone like Hooper was there later.



# 36 – Fremantle
James Craig / North Adelaide / 195cm / 91kg

James is another who I think probably deserves to go higher but I think clubs are going to struggle on exactly what position he is going to play at AFL level. Most of his junior footy has been played in the ruck and whilst he only stands 195cm his vertical leap is terrific along with his endurance and foot skills. Ultimately I think he will settle into a key defensive post and given his physical maturity I think he could step up sooner than later. I love him because I think his work ethic is as good as anyones. Whenever he comes off he is absolutely spent, and when you watch him on the field you see why. Just gives it everything. A really good solid player for mine.

Others they may consider here: Having taken Morabito and Sheppard its time to get some spine players for them.

# 37 – North Melbourne
Nat Fyfe / Claremont / 188cm / 78kg

Strikes me that North have develop a lot of kids who are hard at the contest in Swallow, Ziebell etc. But Fyfe solves I think a problem area which is medium sized fwds that can kick goals - kicked 6 in their Colts final. Wright is developing but Edwards, Jones etc just haven’t been consistent as North fans would have hoped IMO. Fyfe probably is one of those players that could go 20-70 but I am a fan. 3rd tall type who is a really good lead up player and was very influential during the Champs and been good since. Has a massive amount of x factor and with his height will potentially cause opposition defenders many headaches. Good kick but probably not in the elite category – awareness, vision, ability to take contested grabs and uncanny ability to kick goals are what sets him apart. He could be really really good.

Others that could go here: Josh Thomas is the obvious one. Suspect Scott is a fan.

# 38 – Sydney
Kyle Hartigan / Western Jets / 194 / 84

At the start of the year was one who was a definite top 20 prospect. Had some injury worries which haven’t helped but when up and about mostly plays CHB and entered the year as a really promising type who could take some contested grabs. Played champs this year and wasn’t as impressive as many would have hoped (maybe the injuries but was selected so.......). Still, has all the physical attributes to be a damaging player and if he can get going would be a great choice this later in the draft. Suspect I will hear plenty telling me he will be a lot earlier than this.

Others that might be considered here: Key position defenders are the go at swanland after taking Rohan and Lucas. Might hope a Craig fell to here or rate Dare, Thompson, Roberton etc higher than I do.

# 39 – Hawthorn
Josh Thomas / Broadbeach / 178cm / 70kg

Won’t the selection of this kid be interesting. I was surprised he was at DC as didn’t feel his form was that good but a number of clubs including the Pies surely have their eyes on him given they invited him down to Lexus for training. From all reports went pretty well and every chance he goes at # 30 but am tipping that’s probably a bit high for him. Rejected a contract with GC and my bet is Hawks will swoop, particularly given they have interviewed him a couple of times. Would appeal to Clarko as a tough inside ball winner who can also run and carry. Still only light but will develop and develop into a nice McGlynn replacement over time.

Others that might be considered here: Would love Craig to be here but I think they are pretty committed to Thomas if he is there. If not a quality tall left would be the go. Plenty to come later so hit Thomas first and keep him out of Norths clutches. Maybe Max Gawn or a developing ruck would also be an option here. Am not such a big wrap for the ruck prospects outside Vardy and Gawn so more likely a rookie selection. Hannath would be in the mix though.

# 40 – Geelong
Jason Tutt / NSW / 176cm / 72kg

Reportedly a number of clubs are into this highly skilled youngster from Canberra. I have seen a fair bit of him through the NSW juniors and he was one of only three from NSW to be invited to DC. Bulldogs, Collingwood and Richmond all interested along with the Cats as a Wojinski replacement in years to come. Only stands 176cm but is really composed and for a light fella keeps his feet at the contest. Rarely looks pressured and really good decision maker in traffic. Played mostly HB and skills are outstanding and from memory I think he had something like a circa 80% efficiency rate thru the champs which is in the elite if not close to the best. He would be likely to develop as a back pocket / half back but he is going to need to bulk up. In saying that he doesnt dodge a contest at all and tackling is a really solid part of his game. I think there is always something that draws you to a player though and for mine its his constant running – he just keeps running after he has disposed of it and is looking to be a part of the next play. Could be a Wojinski, Aussie Jones type footballer in years to come and don’t be surprised if he goes in the second round.

Others to be considered here: Either Tutt or Gawn here.

# 41 – North Melbourne
Ryan Harwood / Glenorchy / 182cm / 76kg

Gee I hope this bloke goes. I love a good Ranga! Part of the excellent brigade of midfielders that Tassie had this year and probably the hardest working one. Still only light but will fill out to become a Brad Sewell type player. Gets a heap of the ball and uses it really smartly. Puts a lot of tackle pressure on as well and is adept at winning his own ball. Can play fwd as well and become quite damaging in front of goals so may even develop as a HF flanker type.
Others to be considered are: I think they would be rapt to get Harwood here.

# 42 Geelong
Max Gawn / Sandringham / 206cm / 97kg

Where Max goes will be one of the more interesting results of the draft. Massive unit that resembles Sandilands in height and is already a little further along the physical development side of things than you might think at 97kg. Selected for Metro at the champs but missed with a knee injury from memory. Gets around the ground pretty well and tapwork is obviously a feature of his game. Also capable of taking a contested grab so there is plenty to work with going forward. Ideal for the Cats who lost Mumford.

Others that might be considered here: I think it has to be a ruck and I just don’t have Hannath, Milne, Hayward getting a slot as think they are more likely to be rookie types. In saying that am a big fan of Hayward.

# 43 – Carlton
Byron Sumner / Eagles / 175cm / 71kg

Byron is only a little bloke by the numbers (and so may slide) above but he is a solid sort of bloke when you are next to him. I thought he had a pretty good champs to be honest and has the potential to go around here. Clubs looking for genuine pace and line breaking ability from the back half will be attracted to the smooth left footer. Very promising sort with good ball winning capability and a really penetrating left foot kick. Also very agile and lateral in his movement. Strikes as someone who is going to get fed the ball from a contest and be assigned the role of distributing the footy. If you had to liken him to a current player I think it would be Wojinski from the Cats. Nice selection for the Blues because i think they need to improve their ball delivery off half back at times.

Others that might be considered here: I had Jessie Crichton here but I think its more likely a Sumner.

# 44 – Richmond
Sam Reid / Murray Bushrangers / 192cm / 84kg

Another that went to DC who surprised me a little bit. Will be interested in what others think but clearly clubs are excited about the potential and wouldnt surprise if he went much higher. Brother of Ben at Collingwood and much like Ben has a bit of filling out to do. Has played all over the place to date and even had a run in the ruck but think he will ultimately settle as a running defender / wingman. Played in the champs but didn’t really do a lot but has a red hot go below his knees which is attractive. Got good speed, runs all day and could probably play on a variety of types given he is pretty athletic. I liken him a little to Tyson Goldsack – I think Sam will become that type of player.

Others that might be considered here: Hill is the obvious choice but I think some good talls are left that they can hook into. Winmar would in the mix here as well. Talented fwd who the Tigers need one of. Not sure he is a Hardwick type though. Silverlock might be an option.

# 45 – Adelaide
Tom Hill / Northern Knights / 199cm / 82kg

One of the blokes who was touted as an 08 selection who obviously didn’t get taken and may have slipped a little this year. Obviously a big kid and he gets around the ground pretty well...........when he isn’t injured! And thats the knock on him, will clubs be convinced that he can stand the rigours of pre-season training and stay injury free. If he can he is a terrific prospect. Great size and good motor and still plenty of scope to fill out physically. Both his hand and foot skills are good and could play a variety of roles but most likely its a CHF where his pace and quick movement will get him into uncontested positions. I think he is even a chance to ruck at senior level and if he could add that to his bow he becomes a really exciting prospect.

Others that might be considered here: They are pretty well covered so will go best available but an insurance option on Tippett would be wise.


# 46 – Hawthorn
Dylan Grimes / Northern Knights / 192cm / 81kg
Younger brother of Jack who will probably end up more as a defender. Has good athletic credentials though and hence there is a chance he could move more into the midfield group. Goes well in the 1:1 contests and is probably one that could become pretty adaptable in terms of the types he could play on. Another player who I liken to a Goldsack insomuch as you think he could probably play a tall key defensive post but probably more likely to become a 3rd tall defender who can play on a variety of types. Good pace so also a player who defences could run out through in time.

Others that might be considered here: Donaldson is an athletic tall that I thought would be a good fit for the Hawks. LUff, Busher, Dare, Thompson were others.


# 47 – Brisbane
Myles Sewell / North Ballarat / 182cm / 80kg

Brother of Brad and plays a pretty similar game. Tough inside midfielder who won the JJ Liston this year for best VFL player. He is 21yo and I had him in for my mock draft in 06 I think it was. Skills are solid and its his use of the ball in contested situations that really stand out. Also has good endurance and seems well suited to starting as an inside midfielder next year at senior level. Given so many of his type you think he could be a rookie.

Others to be considered here: Certainly some of the smaller or medium sized fwds. Winmar would be a handy player in the Lions list but I think that mature body who can win a contested ball in the AFL next year would have real appeal. There are small fwd options towards the end of this draft or available in the rookie and I would think they may hold off a bit here.


# 48 – Fremantle
Nicholas Winmar / Claremont / 190cm / 78kg

Ahhhh......Nicholas Winmar. Surely someone is going to buy this bloke on his surname? Another who I found really hard to place in the draft. Has got so much potential its not funny. Wonderful height, good pace, bit of x factor but an engine like Sav Rocca. The club that takes Nicholas is going to believe he has got the work ethic to get his endurance levels up. Blessed with great pace, skills and agility he really good be an x factor player that a club would take much earlier than this. Testing results usually count for something though so he could drift. Has played wing / HF at junior level and suspect this is where he will end up although I think more Fwd pocket early.

Others they would look at: Maybe a Fyfe if he fell to here. Silverlock would be another. Speedy type like Hicks as well but you cant go past Winmar surely.


# 49 – Fremantle
Joel Houghton / Perth / 196 / 80

Been caught with WA fwds before like Daly and another left footer FF that played for WA not being selected and worry that this kid might go the same way. He played for WA in the champs and was impressive averaging a couple of goals a game. Plays CHF in local comp and has really good height, seems to cover the ground well and finishes his work in front of goal really well. Screening results were pretty good so there is a lot to like. I have swayed backwards and forwards on where to have him. Have had him as high as #40 but the ghosts of Gourdis, Daly and whoever that other left footer was who I loved makes me even think rookie.

Others that might be considered here: Debated between a fwd and a ruck here. Hayward or Milne would be the option or a Donaldson / Kicket / Hannath. I am a fan of Hayward but think he is an early rookie. Milne is a bit the same and probably doesnt suit Subiaco.

#50 - Melbourne
Liam Patrick / NT / 185cm / 81

HF type who has come from nowhere recently and could go as high as Essendon's pick #26. Along with Troy Taylor they are the real x factor types in this draft and its not surprising to see them increasingly liked by clubs in a draft which is considered weak. Will be reunited with cousin Liam and provide a real marketing bonanza for the Dees. Typically plays HF but has an exceptional leap on him so could easily fill a role out FF and will probably rotate through their with Jurrah catching opposition defences off guard. Good skills and can take a grab so get ready Dee fans for a terrific fwd line with three very talented indigenous lads

Others that may be considered here: Originally had Ayden Kennedy so someone like him or a Serhat Temel albeit I dont think they are looking at him from what I am hearing.


# 51 – Richmond
Zach Ledin / Geelong Falcons / 181cm / 78kg

Over age player who went around again for the Falcons after injury last year meant we didn’t see his best. Well 09 was a different story. Absolutely dominated at times for the Falcons and racked up some pretty impressive disposal stats through the year. I actually think Zach might go a bit higher than this and wouldn’t be at all surprised if his name was called at 30 or later. Plays through the midfield where he is a good height and has terrific running stamina. Plays inside and out but I like him as a bit more of an outside player where he can use his skills. In saying that he can win his own ball. He would be one that could be ready to go a bit sooner. Another I would love to see in black and white.

Others that might be considered here: A running HBF type like Menzel or Wanganeen who oozes class would be ideal for the Tiges right here. Grimes would be another though plays taller.

# 52 – Fremantle
Marcus Davies / Tasmania / 185cm / 84kg

Davies would be a really good choice. Typically plays HB and has an abundance of courage. Good overhead, can take a strong mark, win his own footy and run off his opponent to attack. A young Dean Solomon if you will. Tends to rack up some good stats but its his defensive pressure that I think is impressive. Can be a very dominant player at times but its his ball use at stages that can let him down a bit. Could be a real find though if a club can get his disposal efficiency up.

Others that might be considered here: Joel McDonald would have to be chance as it seems to be between Freo and the Roos.

# 53 - North Melbourne
Josh Donaldson / West Perth / 194cm / 85kg

Versatile tall who represented WA at champs and can play a variety of positions. Mainly played as a back up ruck at the champs but at 193cm will be recruited to play back or possibly even CHF where he has done well at times. I think his best chance at AFL level is to become a FB or CHB where he has also spent some time. Got good athletic credentials, good pace for a big fella and a big leap on him. Can also take a contested grab and kick a goal so will be interesting to see how he develops. Similar to Ryder in many ways!

Others to be considered here: Ideally given the selections I have taken its a KPF. Thought about Temel and McDonald so would think they are in the mix but I just think its a tad high for here and having watched a bit more of Donaldson am even more impressed.

# 54 - Sydney
Andrew Hooper / North Ballarat / 172cm / 78kg

Every year there is a bloke like Hooper. Dean Kelly ghosts for me are revisted but Hooper is different. Whilst its highly unlikely blokes of his stature get picked up this early (if at all) I think Andrew is very likely to go around here and he is a very much a Swans type player. Everything he does on a footy field says he is a chance to be very successful at senior level. Very very hard at the pill, wins a heap of contested footy, runs hard all day and has really neat finishing skills with a reasonably penetrating kick. One of the things that makes him distinctive is his sprints though. He is incredibly quick off the mark and would therefore present as a terrific Back pocket / roving type to man the elite smalls running around for many teams at the moment. I really believe this guy is in the Sam Mitchell mould and a club would do well to give him a go.

Others they might consider here: With Bradshaw and hartigan and Panos they might aim up for a developing mid. Guys like Menzel, Ah Chee, Roberts, Allmond, Cowan and Long would be in the mix.


# 55 – Sydney
Derek Wanganeen / Port Adelaide / 172cm / 63kg

Small and light (but I thought he was closer to 70kg) and hence you wonder how he is going to get drafted but let me tell you this kid has something. Seen a bit of him and typically plays back or wing but his decision making and work through traffic is first class. Big ball winner and uses the ball really well both by hand and foot. One of the things I like about him is that he always seems to attack the corridor – lets hope AFL footy doesnt knock that out of him. Backs that with what appears to be a good fitness base and constant pressure around his man and as such tends to get good tackle numbers. Could be one of the finds of the draft.

Others that might be considered here: Guys like Delborello, Sam Shaw, Cowan, McAdam, Long and Gordon all good choices who haven’t got a home yet.

# 56 – Geelong
Joe Dare / Geelong Falcons / 188cm / 81kg

Bit of a bolter late in the year and one who has risen up for me post his DC and moreover his interviews with up to 6 clubs. Key position defender who presents in the Nick Maxwell style of third up defender. Courageous as you can get and would be very coachable. Skills good and great Harley

# 57 – Hawthorn
Chris Luff / Peel Thunder / 193 / 82

Wonderful Full Back option from the West who I really wanted to slot in earlier than this. Played for WA at champs and had a great time of it. Been good at the local level as well and impressed as a cool collected type bloke who always makes good choices. This bloke just reminds me of a young Scarlett. Was made to play this role and plays the role really well. Composed, makes good decisions, skilful as well as an attackling flair when required. Probably used it more by hand than foot when I saw him but always seemed to release players into space. Great option for the Swans here.


Others that might be considered here: Guys like Roberton, Busher, Donaldson would all be in the mix if still here.


# 58 – Hawthorn
Jesse Smith / North Melbourne

Others that may be considered here: Jordan Williams. Favourite of mine. McAdam would be a good type down there who would continue to add to the ‘class’ pool they have.

# 59 – Carlton
Ayden Kennedy / Eastern Ranges / 191cm / 80kg

Another versatile tall type who could ultimately play a variety of spots. Tested really well at Draft camp in agility jump and sprint which make for a very promising footballer. For though I just am not sure Ayden has done enough to warrant selection so have him lower than others might see it. Dont deny he has all the promise but it would be good to see him dominate some games. Ultimately a type that I think will play more wing / HB.

Others they may consider here: Originally had MacGuire as thought he was a walk up start for the Blues back half but not to be. More likely a mature age rookie. Temel and McDonald I would have thought are others these blokes would be into.


# 60 - St Kilda
Dylan McNeil / Murray Bushrangers / 178cm / 75kg

A players player. Capt of the NSW side and won the best player for Div 2. Great leader on the field and from all reports just a fantastic kid with a super work ethic. Very courageous player who is superb at the clearances (and remember NSW didn’t have a fabulous ruck division). Amasses big stats and tends to use by hand and foot very well – in fact its his outside game and execution skills by foot that have really improved this year. I really hope this kid gets the chance because fans will love watching him play. Many of my fellow posters I think have him higher than here and he thoroughly deserves to be but I get a bit worried about the combination of height and explosive pace holding him back a bit.

Others to be considered here: Will go best available and McNeil is a great # 60.

# 61 – Adelaide
Gerrick Weedon / Claremont / 186cm / 80kg

Weedon is a bit of a surprise here insomuch as he hasn’t been talked about a great deal and thats probably because of his champs in that he wasn’t a standout in the Melbourne games. But the kid has come along very well in the second half of the season in his performances for Claremont. Really nice height at 186cm and can play both in and out midfield roles. Typically plays high HF but could easily go into the midfield where his awareness and decision making, ball winning and pressuring around the contest capability will serve him well. He may drift lower than this but I think he is an interesting choice when the draft quality is tapering. Certainly someone that could start as a fwd pocket and is going to give you a contest and some chase Crow fans.


Others that might be considered here: Menzel is a fairly obvious or a McAdam as classy HBs but a small forward like Hicks or Hoegel or Silverlock might all be on the radar.


# 62 – Collingwood
Serhat Temel / Calder Cannons / 194cm / 89kg

Suspect there is quite a bit of interest in this kid and not sure where he will land in the main draft.....if at all. I think there is something worth punting on here though. Big fwd who is probably best suited to FF but could go CHF if he improved his speed off the mark and endurance. Was tried down back this year with the Cannons and had no impact and was then transitioned fwd where he took off. Got better and better as season progressed and finished with a really good finals series and GF. Massive set of hands and a really good contested grab. Kicking is a feature and could be a player of real promise. The knock for me on him is that he didn’t play on a lot of big bodies at TAC this year and I wonder how he will go against bigger bodies. Be interested in his 20m sprint #s because they may tell the tale of whether a club takes him or not.

Others that might be considered here: At # 62 I think it will be a tall and Temel is the best available but not much splits him from a McDonald. Pretty sure it would be a fwd. If they hit a Fitzpatrick or Griffiths at # 30 then I would be hoping Ledin had fallen to here or any of Ah Chee, Taylor, Sewell or Page of those left.

# 63 – Western Bulldogs
Roland Ah Chee / NT / 183cm / 81kg

Another Cometti is going to love and will become a bit of a cult favourite. Can play inside and outside as a midfielder and is very good at winning his footy (had the most touches at the champs for what thats worth). And does he win it – had something like 90 touches in his first 3 games of the champs .....or something like that. Has also played very well in the SANFL albeit I don’t think he has had much if any senior experience. Seeks to be very fit and he is a ball magnet. He is a compact little player and liken him to Foley insomuch as he just loves getting the footy at a contest and bursting away. Nice penetrating kick but it can be a bit hit and miss. In saying that he has an ability to finish his work with good goal scoring potential. He could well go around the 25 plus mark. Also fairly adaptable and could imagine him playing a variety of spots.

Others that might be considered here: They would go with best available in the medium height group. I suspect more back up in the mids. Kids like Geary who went to DC, Page from Bendigo who I am a fan of, Peters who impressed at champs and Scott all left and interesting types who on the cusp. Another Werribee player like Barlow maybe.

# 64 – St Kilda
Josh Cowan / North Ballarat / 183 / 74

Been on my list for a while. Had him pretty close in the original draft and he is what you would probably refer to as a ‘modern type’ insomuch as he can win the footy, run with it and use it pretty well. Skills and ball carrying are probably the two standouts features. For mine though he is pretty light and expect at least 1 year in the VFL if not 2 before he has an AFL physique. In saying all that he went to Draft Camp so he has a number of admirers.

Others to consider here: I think if Temel fell to here the Saints would be interested. Tutt is also being looked at by them and wouldn’t surprise if he made it here. Of those left in my mock though I would be thinking McDonald (leading TAC goal kicker) would be a handy addition given Allen’s retirement. Maybe a Long who is equally creative from the back half or Sam Shaw as a slightly taller type. SIlverlock and Hicks others I reckon these blokes could hit.

Anthony Long / Calder Cannons / 186 / 70

Anthony has been on everyones radar for a while but for mine hasn’t quite put it together yet – it wouldn’t surprise if he went around 30-40 to be honest. Certainly shows an enormous amount of potential. Great height for a HB / Wing type and his leap allows him to play even taller. Very athletic kid who seems to have a bit more time than the others and therefore tends to make pretty good decisions. Doesn’t mind taking the game and whilst still very lightly framed presents as someone who will keep improving.

Others to consider here: McDonald would have to be on their radar given Richo’s departure so maybe they go with him here. Maybe a young ruck prospect like Hannath as well. Sean Tighe is a pretty exciting taller type who could also bob up along with Zac Fitzgerald from SA.


# 68 – Fremantle

Gavin Roberts / Norwood / 190 / 72

Must admit I had kept this kid ‘quiet’ as I didn’t think he was on anyones radar and he was a chance for my last selection in the Phantom but given Weedon fell I went with him. Roberts is a Scotty Pendlebury ‘clone’. Raking left footer who makes the game look pretty easy because of the amount of time he has available to himself. Plays through the middle and is good around the clearances. Can win his own ball as well but you typically want him making the decision around where to give it off to. Beautiful left foot and its penetrating as well. He is pretty light so will need some time to get “AFL ready” but if you are willing to try and develop a Pendlebury type then a late selection on this kid is the go!
Others to consider here: Its definitely a midfield type for mine given the previous selections. Maybe a Tutt if he fell or a Marcus Davies. Both present as Hawthorn type players. Of the pool left a developing ruck like Hannath or they could go and hit McCauley from QLD who tested well at VSS and is very similar to Renouf at the same age.

Jordan Williams / NSW / 184cm / 80kg

Seen a bit of this kid through the year and think Jordan is a real chance of going in the main draft. Maybe out on a limb here but I believe Jordan has got some ‘tricks’ as the recruiters refer to. Nice balanced player who seems to have a strong core and keep his feet in the contest allowing him to win plenty of contested ball. Big penetrating left foot kick on him that gets the ball to advantage. Stood out for NSW on occasions and would be terrific to see him go. Could play HF, Wing or HB. For me could go from 60 onwards.

Others that might be considered here: Like Carlton will be looking for some taller kids so McDonald makes sense or a Temel if here. Lawton and Sam Shaw are potentially others.

Robbie Hicks / Calder Cannons / 176cm / 68kg

I would be calling Robbie Hicks here. I must say I have some doubts but you have to hand it to this kid. He came into the Metro squad late and ended up playing all 5 games which is a good achievement as a small crumbing fwd. Had 20 shots on goal for the carnival but he only converted 9 of them to goals – the rest behinds. I suspect if he had kick 12 or 13 then his name would be more prominent. In saying that he got a DC invite and I suspect clubs looking at quality, pacy, creative small fwds are keen on him. I think Brisbane would be one of those clubs and would take a punt on him here. I noticed Burgan has him around the 40 plus mark. I would be surprised he is that early and really have him going on a needs basis at this point. The one area I would like to see Hicks improve is his efforts at the contest. Has all the x factor and skills but in some of the games I have seen the intensity could be just a tad higher. Should be easy for him as he tested really well at the repeat sprints so he can certainly get to a lot of contests and chase and harass from an endurance perspective. Hope he goes though as he is good to watch.

Claye Beams / Labrador / 182cm / 78kg or Daniel Harris / North Melbourne

Havent seen Claye but is a roughie to be taken around here but he has appointed his agent and so must be somewhat confident of either going to a club in the national draft or being rookie listed by GC. Tough choice for the Pies as Claye is probably more a rookie selection but clearly would help diffuse Dayne going back if the younger bro was down here. Rookie listing is going to be hard (and assuming is old enough as unsure if he is) because that would allow GC to be all over him and most likely prevent him from getting to the Pies. Claye is an outstanding young cricketer who if doesnt play AFL will potentially end up playing for QLD or even Vic as there was some talk he was signing down here. Only really stepped back into AFL this year after seeing brother Dayne go so well and played a number of reserves (4) and senior games (6) for Labrador where his results were good for someone with such little recent footy – he wasn’t even on the roster at the start of the year and only asked for a game in May! After playing 6 senior games went back to the reserves so he could qualify for the reserves finals side and showcase his game a little more. He is a midfield type who from all reports plays like his brother in that he is tough at the contest, has good endurance, neat skills and finishes well in front of goals and ultimately could play a variety of positions around the flanks. This is your genuine smoky!
Other that may be looked at: Also wouldn’t be surprised to see Daniel Harris get taken around here or even a Myles Sewell would be interesting or a Scott Taylor from NT. Howlett from WA was probably one I was keen on at a point to.

# 76 – Western Bulldogs
Dylan Roberton / Dandenong Stingrays / 190cm / 78kg

Played FB / CHB for Stingrays this year and not sure he is tall enough at AFL level to play that role but he is all class. Did an excellent job on some of the better fwds going around at TAC level and won a DC spot which gave him an edge over others for mine. Will play as a 3rd tall defender and again is probably a bit like Josh Drummond insomuch as he is beaut user of the pill and should be used to direct traffic through.

Others they may consider here: Wanted to select Daw here so he would be the obvious I guess. Go on Doggies give Daw a go!

# 77 – St Kilda
Sam Shaw / Oakleigh / 191 / 77

Had left him out the first time around but another who I just tried and tried to manufacture a way in. Incredibly talented athlete who has the height and athletic ability to create some headaches for opposing teams. At this stage I see him more as a HB / Wing type who will play tall but he could easily transition into a key position player if he can beef up a little. Skills are sound and a very handy get this late.

Others to consider here: I thought about McCauley here. I love the Southport kids and I originally left him out because I didn’t think he had the agility but his screening results were good so he would be a chance I guess. Charlie McAdam and Jordan Williams are others I would have thought about.

Big tall who comes off the Southport production line that has produced some beauties like Tippet and either Renouf or White I think went through there as well. Screening results were a long way ahead of what I thought I had seen. Can play ruck or key position and wouldn’t surprise me if he ended up being a ruck / fwd.
Others to consider here: I really debated this final selection for the Swans. With PLayfair going I was leaning to Zac Fitzgerald from SA who is a taller kid who plays either FF or CHF.

Luke Thompson / Geelong Falcons / 192cm / 85kg

Was a chance of going last year as a 17yo and I was a bit surprised he didn’t. Like a lot of those kids they haven’t backed up so well this year and dominated as expected. Not sure clubs will read to much into that and at # 83 Thompson is a real good get for the Lions. Athletic tall that shapes as someone who could play a variety of spots. Will probably make a defender in the Bock mould. Good good pace and a fair engine so will probably play as a bloke who will aim to run off his opponent. Skills are solid and handles the ball very cleanly. Ideally he would be a cm or two earlier and although haven’t seen any testing on him I think he will play a little taller than his 192cm anyway.

Others that might be looked at here: Couldnt split Busher or Thompson for this last spot and went with Thompson. For a mid I think a Ben Howlett could be a late chance. Good WAFL year and could make an immediate impact with his ball winning / use and goal kicking ability as a mid.

# 85 Collingwood
Sean Tighe / Western Jets / 197 / 90

With 4 selections I think the Pies would be looking for a key defensive type. To be honest I think one of their first two selections could well be a key defender. With Brown and Reid the only ‘young options’ down back another must be developed. I was a bit surprised they didn’t look at MacGuire or Thorp so maybe there is someone they have their eye on in the draft. Tighe presents as one that could be on the list. Won the Western Jets B&F principally playing as a CHB but also has the ability to play other positions in the spine as well as the ruck. Ruck in fact could be an area he develops well into given he is very athletic, can take a grab, has a good leap on him and uses the footy pretty well. I like him and I would hope of all the potential tall backs we give this kid a shot.

Others to consider here: Mitch Taylor and Jeremy Lawton were to key position defenders I had a look at along with Alex Stopp. To be fair I think Stopp is the best of the bunch but am spooked off him given he didn’t go at all last year. Stopp has been playing senior SANFL footy this year so maybe a rookie chance and I hope we get him there.

Quite strong for his height and will take the game on so could be a late ND to rookie chance

Others that might be considered here: The guys I really wanted to slot in were McAdam, Gordon and Daw. All good creative HB flanks types who deserve a spot.

Summary

Adelaide

No obvious weaknesses in their list other than clever small fwd. Weedon I think is a good choice in this regard, he aint your 175cm whippet but he is bigger and just as pacy. Also gives a mid rotation option in years to come. Would be well happy to get Lucas # 13 with first rounder though. The rest are a bit speculative but Hill has shown promise, Menzel oozes class. Jetta would be interesting to them if available at Rd 1 or maybe a Hicks, Hoegel, Silverlock late but I think the rookie would be better for these kids. Also thought about a ruck option for them and Hannath was the obvious one who they could go late.

Brisbane Lions

Inside midfielders and small fwds were the needs based players at Lions. Stated to go best available but cannot have great expectations because first pick is not until # 27 and second is in the mid 40’s. Goal will be to land Ball and maybe Jesse Smith and that means a successful draft. Crichton is a great get at #27 and Sewell is an immediate ball winner if they don’t get Ball. Hicks provides the small crumber they need and whilst I have some doubts on him the formline is v good.

Carlton
Key position fwd and a quality player off HB was what I was thinking at Carlton. After that it was Kennedy or MacGuire as that is what appears to be the logical choice. Black will please them but if Panos, Talia etc are still around they would be in the mix. Sumner is a great get all will solve the delivery problems. Wouldnt surprise to see a Menzel land here or another tall late like Donaldson.

Collingwood

Clearly like Brisbane do not rate this draft that highly and first pick is just on the edge of the first tier of players. Will be hoping for Ball but more likely Bartlett, Carey, Thomas, Taylor, Panos, Griffiths etc. Taken Moore simply because he was next best with the addition of Ball to the ND along with the fact I think he is a Hine type. Next pick is # 62 and someone like a Temel if they went mid first would be in the mix along with McDonald, Houghton etc. Last two will be speculative and either Beams or Harris for mine with the talented Tighe the last choice.

Essendon

Dont get me wrong I think Essendon have a good list but there were some needs. Mid to help Watson (Ball will give them that) a bit, key fwd, medium sized fwd and pacy backmen were the targets. Think Essendon had some nice gets and a few areas fixed. Melksham or Lucas will be at #10 and offer terrific upside. Fitzpatrick will be a good developing fwd. Colyer I think is a player of real presence and opportunity.

Fremantle

For Freo I thought a combination of best available but also some key position players. Personally I thought they came out really well. Morabito is a star, Sheppard very solid, Winmar x factor type who when fit could provide spark to a team that doesnt have a heap of it. Houghton late will pls locals and whilst promising has a way to go whilst Davies is a replacement for Solomon in the physical stakes and Craig is probably a good get for the Dockers that late.

Geelong

Just gave them best available. Gawn will please them as I think after Vardy the best ruck prospect in the draft. Bastinac and Gysberts typical Cat midfielders who are good at the clearance. Tutt is a class act and a great get there. Dare as a final selection rounds out the 'needs'.

Hawthorn

For a club that really didn’t rate the draft then some handy selections here. Thomas potentially an A grader they have been into, whilst Grimes and Luff offer defensive options. Smith has been on their dance card so I think he will land as well. The youung lad Roberts could be the real find. He is all class and reminds of Pendles.

Melbourne

Best available for the Dees but if it was a plit decision then a ruck and KPF in the last two picks were goals. In the end a lovely draft for the Dees. 4 selections in the first # 18. All A graders as well. 3 years time these blokes will be killing it. Donk knock McMilland Pittard who is a potential top 20 and Patrick who offers a heap of upside.

North Melbourne

Wanted to get the Roos some midfielders, key position fwd and some medium sized fwds. In the end a great draft for the Roos. Would be happy to land Cunnington and if don’t might see a Talia go here or a Butcher. Fyfe gives them another medium fwd with x factor. Duncan and Harwood are similar But Bartlett adds the speed. Donaldson presents as someone who could play CHF or CHB so the North coaching crew have a lot to work with.

Port Power

Talls that could play fwd and back as well as an elite mid. Butcher and Talia would be excellent gets and fill a need and then a Stevens for the midfield....v good!

Richmond

Sorry Tiger fans but a few needs as you know. Good news is a quality list of gets. Tigers have done well and landed a number of needs bar a ruckmen. Martin they are pretty a lock on but then Christensen who some have as top 10 and Carey who I think is just a footballers footballer are terrific gets inside first two rounds. Ledin, Long, Reid, McDonald all fill needs and were best available. Aim up for Hayward, Hannath in the rookie.

St Kilda

Not a big draft for Sainters who would be happy to get Lovett. Should imagine best available is their goal. Astbury is promising and could play CHF or CHB - terrific tall type. McNeil is a born footballer and Cowan and Shaw are good gets late. Thought about mcCauley instead of Shaw for these guys. Go to the rookie for a ruckmen is my view.

Swans

Isnt it nice to see the Swans going for young talent. Rohan and Panos would be great gets and really give them some things they need. Both A graders and Rohan has x factor. Hartigan fills a defensive spots and Wanganeen late would be handy a cult figure before long. McCauley is much like a Kurt Tippett at the same age and offers similar upside. This kid could be a bolter come draft day and think he may land in the 40+. Hooper is a classic Swan isnt he?

Western Bulldogs

Getting Griffiths would be great for them as it delivers on a need whilst Roberton gives them support down back for future years. For me, Ah Chee is a terrific get late as could play senior footy soon and Hutchings is a good ball winner who has already played a heap of WAFL seniors and impressed.

West Coast

Three selection in the top 23. Jetta, Tapscott and Taylor all different types and thats maybe the goal for them.

Luke McDonald / Eastern Ranges / 196cm / 90kg

Gone with McDonald who is an over age player who dominated at FF this year for the Ranges and ended winning the goal kicking for the TAC. Tigers really need to develop someone like this. That never seems to be a reason for these blokes to go high and unfortunately I don’t think Luke will be any different. Got a massive set of hands on him and takes a contested grab but I worry a bit about his pace and agility when he comes up against the bigger mature bodies. Still has a wonderful boot on him and his conversion rate is high. Worthy of the Tigers taking a punt and adding to a list of taller youngsters.

Christian Howard / Glenelg / 184 / 81

Wasnt someone on my radar but a friend in SA who has seen a bit of him and rates a few of the Glenelg U18 players tells me he is well worthy. I havent selected him because I just havent seen enough to call it over others I have seen. PLays back flank and is pretty pacy and apparently tested pretty well. His footskills are sharp and he tends to make good decisions from all reports.

Hayden Busher / WA / 193cm / 85kg[/B]

CHB for the WA side who really caught my eye at the champs. Many have Luff ahead of him but I am not so sure. Really aggressive type player who seems to like hurting KPFs. Hits the pack hard and tends to recover well. Good tackler and uses the ball pretty well. Havent followed that closely since but would be interested in WA folks thoughts. He will be a late ND to rookie chance.

Charlie McAdam / Thunder / 180cm / 81kg

One of my favourite players and fear I may be a bit to excited in taking him here. An overage player who really came on in the last 12 months. Plays HB and is used as a quarter back style player who reads the ball well and gets fed the ball to distribute on his left foot. Accumulates a lot of touches and his agility is a real feature in terms of allowing him time and space. He will need to be placed into a back line which is very accountable and use him as the player to release through. I have a feeling he could go as high as 30 odd.


Michael Barlow / Werribee / 189 / 91

22yo who has impressed at VFL level for a while. He can play a variety of roles and has good skills. Has a pretty good athletic base and is a great size. For me is a definite rookie chance and would be a chacne to play senior footy next year even off the rookie list. Very similar to Sewell (who I have seen more of incl his prelim against our blokes) so am keen to see who recruiters rate higher.

Matt Dea / North Ball Rebels / 186 / 84

Havent seen a lot of him bc he is only pretty new to the game I think having been more focussed on BasketBall. Nice height though and basketballers seem to go allright in traffic at AFL level so he will be in the mix for rookie with me. Could well go higher but i havent seen enough to say that he will.

Myles Pitt / Dandenong / 190 / 85

Didnt play a lot of TAC footy this year but really impressed when he did. Powerful FF for Dandy but will be a third tall at AFL level. Love his competitiveness and strength at the contest. Uses pill well off both sides which is a must for good fwds IMO and has the ability to make good decisions when looking for options. I think Myles could go from 50 onwards.

Declan Bevan / QLD / 196cm / 90kg

Not a 100% sure this guy will go because he has been a bit disappointing after having a really promising junior career. But he is one of the blokes that has shown me he has a few tricks and is one of the few quality taller blokes left. Has played a variety of positions including ruck as well as key fwd and more recently defensive posts. Not sure where he will settle but will be first tried as a fwd I would think where he could be pretty formidable for opposition defences. If he fails there he could be a defensive type and as a result offers some flexibility this late. Gets off the mark pretty well and has a strong set of hands on him. Kicking skills are also pretty good so shapes as someone who could make an impact. I think the issue for Bevan is does he get enough of the ball. A bit of speculative choice but could a be a real find in the rookie draft.

Jack Gunston / Sandy Dragons / 191 / 74

Sandy have a habit of producing some very good footballers and Gunston is very much a chance. I havent seen a heap of him so havent selected him because its more heresay for me. The little I have seen suggests he has plenty of physical development left so would be in the mix late I would have thought. Probably better suited back than fwd but could be developed as either. He seems strong at the contest and has good courage and seems to me like a bloke who would develop like a Goldsack. Nice kick on him which is pretty penetrating as well.

Ben Howlett -
WA mid who is mature age. Seen a bit of vision of him and I was really impressed. Pays midfield and can win his own ball. He can run fwd for a goal as well. I originally had him around 60 and wouldnt surprise to see him taken late in the ND.

Deon Gordon / NT Thunder / 185cm / 87kg

Have to wait a long time for their 3rd pick and having taken Talia and Panos am thinking a medium defender here. Solid lad who plays HB and oozes a heap of class. Beautifully skilled with really good balance at the contest. Can win his own footy but more likely an outside type who will have the ball directed through him on the way out. Got clean hands and seems to make terrific decisions, always having more time than he should. I think the knock on Deon is going to be his fitness base – he could shape up a bit and I think a bit more aggression at the contest would help him. Minus the physical aggression he reminds of a young Byron Pickett. Definite late chance for ND and a rock solid rookie for mine.

Scott Taylor / NT / 181cm / 74kg

Nuggety midfield type who deserves to go higher after a sensational champs. Was an absolute ball magnet who can win the footy himself or equally receive and carry. Just tough and never seems to give up......sounds like Scott West huh? Well its gets better because Taylor has got good kick penetration on him. Would love to see him get a go at Collingwood in the rookie if not at # 78. Again, one who I think could play pretty quickly. Just a really smart footballer. Knock on him is going to be how much development clubs think he has left. Dont think he will go ND albeit am a massive fan, he is an early rookie.

Cameron Milne / Tasmania /

Over age player who was very good at the champs this year. Had a couple of very solid game where he was very physical in the ruck contest and used his hands really well to feed the Tassie midfielders. Bit more your old fashioned type ruck who is adept at sitting behind the play and diffusing the opposition fwd thrusts.

Damian Hayward - If the Pies hadnt got McNamara and Jolly then I would have had us hitting him late. I am really impressed with him. Couple of times I watched him he was the reason WA got going in the middle. Gets around the ground ok and uses alright as well.

Josh Hannath - tall athlectic ruck from SA who went to DC and tested pretty well. Had him on the cusp but I think he is an early rookie. Post Vardy, Gawn and Fitzpatrick he will be right in the mix for anyone wanting a ruck.

Josh Giddings / Glenelg / 190cm / 75kg

Represented SA at the champs and sticks out as he is only a whippet of a kid but has a bit of potential there. Plays as a CHF / HF type and has good pace and a big leap with a strong set of hands. Finishes his work well in front of goals. The only thing I would say about Josh is am not sure how well he goes when the ball isn’t in his hands.

Jack Weston / Gippy Power / 189 / 88

Jacky boy is an interesting one. He was a real chacne for the Pies this time last year but didnt go. Interesting type because I have seen him play nearly every role bar ruck. Goes fwd and back and can play in and out. Whilst that all sounds good and he is pretty quick I havent really seen him influence games heavily and they are the types I look for late. He would be a good chance rookie though.

Jarred Allmond / Eagles / 182cm / 70kg[/B]

19yo who is a bit of a smoky. Suspect he wont go but had a terrific year where he debuted at league level and made a big impression in his first few games, tapered off through middle of season but came good again in last third of the season. Big possession winner and a classic SA midfielder who oozes class. I have seen vision of him twice and was really impressed. He ended up winning the award for best young talent in the SANFL and with his booming left foot will be an interesting prospect come draft day.

Jamie Macmillan / Oakleigh / 188 / 81

Another of those types that will attract attention bc he is a 6ft plus midfielder type. Just cant have all of them and its bloke like he Hutchings, Carey, Hooper that I reckon will be fighting for few spots. He could easily get in but I rate guys like Carey a tad higher.....but I seem to be on my own there. He is quicker than those I mentioned though and his skill level would be superior to some of them as well.

Josh Groenewegen / Launceston / 196cm / 80kg

Another I had hoped that would have come on a bit more this year. Athletic tall who plays ruck for Tas but because of his agility and leap could play a key position as well. I have seen him as a fwd and was probably then thinking he needs to go back. I suspect that is why I have him this late.....I am just not sure his best spot. Will be interested to get TFL Tigers thoughts (although he is a bit pro Tassie kids and will have him gone by # 30).

Brayden Norris / Murray / 186 / 70

I dont think any of us who have watched much of Norris would have him in. I was surprised he got to DC but just put it down to 10-15 who couldnt go. To then see him test the way he did amazed me and so he becomes a chance. I dont think other than the athletic credentials there is anything that puts him ahead of others so I leave him out. Thats not saying he is bad its just that in the few games I have seen him I dont see it.

Justin Bollenhagen / South Adel / 183 / 75

Another who I was a bit surprised hit the DC. Have seen footage of him and there is no doubt there is a heap of skill there so he could well be a bloke that goes late but I am thinking a rookie. Anyone looking for a pacy ball carrying wingmen who can use it well as a late selection may hit him.

Taite Silverlock

Really wanted to find a place for this fella. Played some senior SANFL footy I think and handled himself pretty well. Played mid in juniors but will go as a small fwd in the Robbie Gray mould. I like him.

Richmond already has 9 players 180cm or less in height. I can't see us taking another one let alone two more in Christensen and Hooper. We'll either go for a KPP if anyone decent is still around at 19 or as you mentioned a Sheppard. We need to add size to our list as well as ability.
