Politics So I guess when the s**t hits the fan, everyone's a socialist

Happens all the time, how much money was pumped into the car manufacturers in South Australia just for them to peace out after 12 months of "Trying our best to be profitable". This isnt even socialism causing this, its capitalism allowing companies to use their leverage over entire states/countrys GDPs to force bailouts.
Just was not profitable in a global car market where margins are so tight. Holden and Ford just could not push the volume of cars needed to offset wages and cost of manufacturing. If companies aren't profitable then the tax payer shouldn't be on the hook to bail them out. I am sad though, I loved the Aussie made Commodore :(

Shareholders>Local economy when it comes to these companies.

There isnt a car manufacturing country in the world doesnt give subsides for manufacture in their country.

Well except australia.

Guess who gets to fund corporations with their own tax money!

That is true, usually in response to government policy which effects business operations (i.e. lockdowns, relocation, change in energy policy etc) and/or governments funding research projects via their high tech private industry (i.e. Toyota and hydrogen tech/innovation) . Companies like Toyota, Hyundai etc destroyed the Aussie car market, Aussies just preferred those cars over the local ones.

Cool trivia: Australia was the first country to import Toyota cars, great story: https://www.toyota.com.au/news/toyota-celebrates-60-years-of-helping-build-australia

Holden and ford were doing fine - in the gfc holden was the only arm of gm still making a profit. Our car subsidy was funk all - read that it was more than covered by the taxes paid just by holdens workforce.

Car sales were falling and by the end they tanked to their lowest point in their prospective histories. Aussies just weren't buying the cars and the margins in the sales they had were not enough to keep them viable.

Holden was doing ok till they announced they quit australia - they tanked after that - ford had the ranger which was a better car than the collorado - although i bought a collie myself as that motor was just sex!! The car was cheaply put together but tbh i loved it.

If it were made in oz id have bought another.

In the end Holden only manufactured the Commodore and their variants, everything else was imported.

I guess my point is, by the time the 2nd decade of this century came around it wasn't the 60s 70s 80s anymore, and the market had moved past the 'nothing like a V8' mantra. Suv's, hybrids and small engined cars were the new black, watch for an explosion in the EV market in this decade.

Fossil fueled cars will be defunct soon enough.

* I own a WM V8 statesman, beautiful car and excellent build standard comparably , and previously an SS. And I own an investment piece an LJ Torana.

Cue in the 'you're an eviro terrorist' brigade.

HG Premier, Gold, 253 owner here. My brother still maintains it for me, drives it around a bit, he loves the low cut bucket seats.

A bailout is the worst of all worlds, but I wouldn't have minded seeing the government nationalise all car production in Australia. Could have switched them all to electrics. Probably could have bought the IP for Holden and licensed Ford's IP. Or just made their own marque if they were being held over a barrel.

The "free" market, it does not work folks.
That's because what we're seeing isn't a free market. Any supply chain / inflation issues are only due to state intervention.

Only the weak crave socialism and state intervention.

I have a question. When you were born, did your parents throw you away to ensure that you weren't weak? Do you anticipate never dying or growing old, getting injured or sick?

I'd be interested in you teaching me your ways, to ensure that I am not one of the weak ones.

Should any of that ever occur, provisions will be made for me, at my own arrangement, without the intervention of the state.

You're saying that arrangements were made for your birth, at your own arrangement, without the intervention of the state?

Your rugged individualism knows no bounds. I knew it was a good idea to ask you how you came to be so able.

Of course I didn’t. Those arrangements were made by my family.

As much as you wish it would be, the state will never be your mother or father. It doesn’t care about you, or any individual. It cares only about the mass.

I applaud your parents, for bringing you up as they did.

Did they homeschool you, by any chance? Were they themselves homeschooled?
