“I want to play out the season, but I am ready to make the transition into a coaching role. I am really looking forward to the next phase of my football involvement as a ruck coach, working with Nic, Scott and Cal.

I am glad he wants to stay on a coach. I think he will be a better ruck coach next year so there are not some conflicts as a player coach he would have had this year.

Cheers Coxy, you champion!

Made the right choice I reckon, going out with dignity as the all time games record holder at the club.

Playing out the season just to get in the way? Since he's clearly behind Lycett on fork of late :)

His retirement alone will help Lycett make his decision. In a season that clearly won't yield finals success I think it's OK to let one of this club's great players have a few games for the sake of it.

Happy for him to play the remaining home games and let Lycett play away.

Cox on fork?

A bit like Woosh it's likely there was a mix of being pushed and deciding to retire but ultimately a decision in the best interest of the club going forward has been made without any apparent acrimony or bitterness

Do think it would be better though if we gave Coxy a send off game against Richmond then gave Lycett a good run unless we are planning to mothball Naitanui so he's right for 2015

Really? You don't think once you've got little to achieve this year except prep for next year, that you might as well get on with said prep?

Glass did the right thing. Coxy has been pushed and letting him keep playing til year end is the compromise...

Fair enough. But let's not have folk pretending (a) he wasn't pushed and (b) he's doing this "for the team".

No doubt his media mates like Thommo will be out there denying both and stating he's a great clubman blah blah :)

Great player. Ending as awkwardly as he contests boundary throw ins

Clearly. Here's your big send off. Now let's get into the future. Much better ... but like Woosh hanging around 5 weeks after he quit (;) ), this is the price we have to pay for a champ whose acting a little more from a self interest perspective at the death :)

I have no doubt in my mind that Lycett knows he's got a huge part to play in the future of the playing group. I'm sure that's who you're thinking about. Cox will probably get maybe two or three games for the rest of the year which will probably be home games. Who he replaces is the question.

Not pretending he wasn't pushed by the way. I knew as much as most people on here that his time was up, just not too fussed that he might get a couple of games, especially considering the year is done, they're already playing kids and that there's like six games left this season.

I'll repost my post from the main board:
I've been very, very critical of him over the last two years because his form was simply not good enough. But he was an utter champion of the club, a great servant and the best ruckman of the modern era. Great career. I'll be forever thankful for his service.

Now, in saying that, I don't see the need to play out the rest of the year. I could live with it as long as Lycett does not miss out on a single game, but it's still largely pointless and it should be an immediate retirement.
