Come on, to be fair Gav - the Solly trade seems to have polarised people's thinking. There's no crime in that. It happens when a player gets traded. Some supporters think "good riddance", some think "we were ripped off", some think "we shoulda kept him" etc, etc. Just differing opinions. I, for one, am happy for Essendon supporters to discuss their thoughts here, so long as it's on topic and not disrespectful of our club in the process. :)

performed extremely well...at the risk of sounding emotional, i disagree. from the outset it was either going to be solly or jj who left. given that jj is a two time best and fairest, it was gonna be solly. i don't think either of these players got the respect they deserved. still on the list...bolton, winderlich. these are players who aren't, and will never be, anywhere near as good as solly or jj. the reason we didn't get rid of them is cause noone wanted them! picking up kids might be well and good, but they haven't proven themselves, might promise a lot now and not deliver. as each year goes by, i lose respect for the club i've followed the whole 25 years of my existence. if we continue to lose emotion and passion for the game, it wont be worth anything...i'll get off my soap box now!

Crap, Solly knocked back the deal he was offered.
Bolton you have a point on, but Winderlich would have got a two year deal at another club. Several were interested. Winderlich might not be as good as Solly at his best but he can at least be better than Solly of 2006.

I'll lose respect for the club if we hang onto players or give them more than they are worth because of emotion.

I suspect Essendon doesn't have a Board of its own. Sad really.

Hey, seeing as there are so many essendon supporters on the Freo Board, can you help me out with your line of thinking. It seems to go along the lines of;

Solomon is too slow, too injured, and just plain old passed it for AFL and will never play again.

At the same stage, the line of thought says;

We never got the trade that he deserved and are generally unhappy that he was traded, or even considered for trade.

Has Kevin been at the club a little toooo long?

Everyone has a different opinion, that's the great thing about footy.

IMO a two year contract for Solly is a risk, because of the state of his knees. I think he needed 2007 to prove himself, to prove he can still play quality football and offering him a one year deal was the right move. He didn't want it and that's fair enough, he wanted security and I don't hold that against him.

I would have been happy to keep Solly, for one year and then have a look at his progress. I would have been disappointed if we signed him for two years, knowing we have been bitten before.

It's rare 26 y/o footballers have to prove themselves, I think Solly has to. Mentally I have no doubt he can get back to playing some really good footy, whether his body holds up to that remains to be seen.

Good points Longy, and i will add that at 26 yrs old he is by no means washed up, as some would have you believe.

There is a general opinion he was playing with a niggling injury, and perhaps over his prefered playing weight last year, not to mention being played out of position. If this is the case then a full pre-season and a different role will possibly bring out his best.
Well done to Harvey for making it possible as i am sure his connections with Essendon ensured the deal.

Just noticed everyone in there "name your best team" thread has him in their 22. You haven't posted one, but you haven't disagreed.

Neatly glanced down to the boundary for 4!

With Schammer out I'd pick Des for round one, but he'd have to start the season well to retain his spot.

If Browne, Webster and Cook play really well during the nab cup the selection committee will have some tough decisions to make, only 3 of Des, Solomon, Cook, Webster and Browne will probably play round one.

Well, I think Des is a much better player than that group, and he plays a completely different role to most of them. How many long kicks into the forward line would you expect from Cook, Solomon or Brown? Webster has played mainly as a decoy HF, but we are past that strategy now, and he will really struggle to get a game. Cook is in his last year I would think, and while he may contribute, this year could be tough for him. Brown will compete with Schammer, not Headland. His disposal is errant (at least when he played several years ago it was), and he is an under the pack type of player rather than a deliverer.

Like all the players, Headland will need to start the season well, because we have depth. And if he/they donesn't then play form players. No problem with that.

I'm with you on Dessie, I thought 2006 was probably his best year for us and a good game on Friday night against Essendon will see him in good stead for a solid start.

Not consistently playing to potential yet but walk up start in our best 22 and will be keen for a big 2007 with plenty to prove.

I'm on the freo board cause i'm highly interested in still supporting solly, and therefore freo, during his time there. clearly i think the decision to let him go was wrong, but i wish him and freo all the best.

has kevin been at the club a little too long...a resounding yes from me. i doubt he'll be there once the current contract ends, which i think is this year.
