MIGHTY EAGLES
Hi all,

I couldnt believe it tonight when I saw a story about the mighty Eagles on ch 10. Havent seen any good footy stories for ages!

Anyway the Eagles announced that they have given a couple of coveted old numbers away to the new boys.

Chris Judd got that champ Mainy's old number 3. Apparently they asked Mainy if he minded giving it to Judd and he was happy to. From the guy they interviewed (Woodhouse?) the Eagles are pretty excited about Judd's potential - so lets hope he goes ok this year.

They showed a snippet of training also and Judd looked just about as tall as Milli as they were walking up the race - although Milli does tend to hunch a little :)

Ashley Sampi was given Lewie's #28 - ahh there was a mighty fine player also - all this reminiscing is bringing back some wonderful memories of past glories :D

Anyway enough dribbling, bring on the damn footy season !!!!!!! I am quietly optimistic we will go a bit better than last year with Woosha at the helm!

p.s they didnt mention the numbers for Seaby, Hansen or Tuckey (if he is coming?) or any number changes.

From the west today;

Star recruits get right number

By John McGrath

TALK about big boots to fill.

The Eagles' two star recruits in 2002 will run out wearing a couple of the most famous guernseys in the club's 15-year history.

Victorian Chris Judd will take over the No. 3 once worn by courageous wingman Chris Mainwaring while local boy Ashley Sampi has inherited the No. 28 of another former star, Chris Lewis.

The jumpers have only been worn by Mainwaring and Lewis - both premiership team members in 1992 and 1994.

Lewis also was the club best-and-fairest winner in 1990. He retired at the end of 2000 with 215 AFL games under his belt. Mainwaring chalked up 201 before his retirement in 1999.

West Coast football operations manager Steve Woodhouse said the match committee had been conscious of the importance of the jumpers when it decided to allocate them to Judd and Sampi, who were recruited at No. 3 and No. 6, respectively, in the recent AFL national draft.

"Chris Judd asked us if he could have No. 3 because he has worn it all his career and he knew it had been sitting there since Mainy retired," Woodhouse said.

"We also felt it would be fitting for Ashley Sampi to get the jumper of Chris Lewis, one of the finest Aboriginal players to have played the game."

The Eagles will hold an official guernsey presentation during a family day at Subiaco Oval on March 17.

Judd and Sampi have both impressed coach John Worsfold on the training track. But the club says it is too early to say whether they will be ready for the western derby against Fremantle in round one.

"There are a lot of guys who started their pre-season ahead of Chris and Ashley and have done a bit more work," Worsfold said. "So the guys who are picked to play will be the ones who show the best form during the pre-season competition."

Another magical, skilful and highly talented young aboriginal will wear the No.28. Fantastic.

Was anyone else surprised by Judd
This guy is very tall, and very well built. He could possibly play key position, as well as midfield in later years. Sort of like Kouta.

Great to hear some footy news, especially on the Eagles. I'm really pleased with those number allocations - I hope they wont feel under too much pressure to perform like the champions who wore the jumper in the past. No news on Seaby, Hansen or Tuckey yet, I'm tipping the #4 jumper will be used this year (formally Antonowicz's)

Tuckey was 21 with the Pies, looks like that will have to change.

Why did they announce only Judd and Sampi? OK OK so they were top ten picks, but couldn't they have at least mentioned the other numbers somewhere...ANYwhere? I may have to get my butt down to Subi for that jumper presentation, if only so I can boo the design ;)

My thoughts: #4 should be offered to Wilson (Glendenning, Sumich, Antonowicz, Wilson...it makes sense. I wanted Cummings to wear #4), if he is happy with 40 then give it to Hansen else Hansen gets a weirdo number, #14 (ex-Cummings) to Seaby, #29 (ex-Donnelly) to Tuckey. And Kerr should get offered the #2 jumper in 2003 if he continues his good form...

Its a pity the AFL doesnt do the whole retiring numbers thing like the NBA but it is a bit hard as there are like 40 guys at a club compared to about 15 in basketball so i suppose you couldnt do it. If however we did, who's numbers would be retired?

Surely Whoosha, McKenna, Lewis, Kemp, Mainy, Sumich etc Matera and Jako when they retire. Who else?

The thing with retiring numbers is that it can only be done for the absolute legends of the game. If we did it for all the stars of the game then within a few years there wouldn't be enough numbers to go around.

Of the WCE I believe only Jako deserves to have his number retired. He is the only eagle who has "team of the century" qualifications, and even that is debatable. Tommy, Mainy, Bluey, Woosha, etc were all legends at the WCE, but not quite among the best of the best of all time in the AFL. Roo maybe, but his temperament may have ruined his chances at being viewed as one of the greatest of all time.

Pyke, Evans, Heady maybe.

Roo........best ever

I like those number allocations Mr Eagle, especially Wilson getting #4 and Kerr #2 pending a good 2002 season.

Does anyone know what number players can go up to? 99? And whats been the highest number ever worn at the Eagles? Turnball #50?

I dont mind giving Kerr the #2 jumper if he plays a good season, but i think he should be allowed to create his own dynasty with the number he wears now. Obviously its a huge honour for a player to get given a champions old number, but it could also prove a burden

Just like the #9 jumper was unknown before Cousins wore it, Kerr could be the type of player who makes his current #34 into a famous number

Just my opinion

Bit weird that Kerr has taken the No.4 jumper.

Thought the No.2 would suit him better, considering he's the new Dean Kemp.

Also good to see Tuckey's name on the list. Looks like he's definitely playing with us this year.
Never trust those Freo supporters when it comes to news on the Eagles;)

He probably wants to be considered to be his own person, not said to be the NEW kemp. He just wants to make the #4 jumper his own i guess.
