Something 'big' coming ??

Some people are clearly never satisfied!!!

1. Our crowds and membership have decreased in his tenure
2. We still aren’t wearing a B&W heritage strip on heritage round.
3. The "Hey Kids!, make a Power guernsey and we will wear it against Richmond!" disgrace.
4. This introduction of a "funk squad".
5. The introduction of a plastic float to be carried around before the game.
6. The lack of drive for interstate support/membership
7. The obsession with the corporate world

I could continue but I won't. We are turning into nothing more than a kitsch marketing campaign and are moving further and further away from what this club is all about.

These may only be issues for me, if you happen to like John and the things he is doing feel free to vote for him when his position is next up for re-election.

I was close :)

I don't know. To involve the crowd you need more than a float and some dancers. Where does the crowd come into it?

Dunno - the focus of the package appears to be pre match for the kids.

I'm not over the top during games - I'm one who spends more time analyzing and watching the game than joinging the chants. But perhaps some PA sound following goals, and the chants will help.

I don't mind the idea (for the kids) of an inflatable fist and lightning bolt on top of the Western grandstand - perhaps using internal lighting to make the lightning bolt glow following goals (especially for night games)

I actually think that this side of the club - pre-game activities as well as corporate are areas the club/JJ are working hard at..... its the tradition and 'club culture' that seem to be getting forgotten.

Take a look at Collingwood - there crowds are not because of guimmicks/marketing - but they get the traditional market.

EDIT: I'm also wondering whether a pre-game montage should be played atevery home game .... to highlight the magpies heritage and our move to the power ... ie some shots of black and white magpies games, transitioning into 80's/90's port magpies ... all with the sound of a heart beating and finally a crescendo (think thats the right term) and a transition to images our AFL success. Maybe a 30 second clip ... maybe a minute - but something to play up our past and move to the future. ... and triggered so that as it completes our guys hit the ground and the club song kicks off.

I WILL be voting for him again. Instead of bagging the Club, why not try and look at the positives?!?!

1. The fact that the Club DID consult with each of the Supporter Groups to improve atmosphere at games, instead of doing what they thought was right.

2. The creation of the Planet Teal Zone for kids prior to the game

3. The incorporation of kids in the pre-match entertainment - eg. Planet 22

+ many others!

As I said, no matter what the Club do, there are always people going to bag them!

1. Our crowds and membership have decreased in his tenure - have a look at our season last yr! Time slots of games don't help either. Petrol prices, interest rates, people need to cut something!

2. We still aren’t wearing a B&W heritage strip on heritage round - that's not the PAFC's fault. Blame the AFL!

3. The "Hey Kids!, make a Power guernsey and we will wear it against Richmond!" disgrace - Don't know much about this to comment

4. This introduction of a "funk squad" - a lot of people, particularly the kids enjoy this!

5. The introduction of a plastic float to be carried around before the game - FYI, it's not plastic!!! It's actually very impressive!

6. The lack of drive for interstate support/membership - again, can't comment as I don't know enough about it.

7. The obsession with the corporate world - all clubs need $$$!!!!

I am not bagging the club at all.

I am more than happy with the on-field side of things. The players, coaching staff and trainers are doing a great job. This is, after all, by far the most important thing.

1. The fact that the Club DID consult with each of the Supporter Groups to improve atmosphere at games, instead of doing what they thought was right.
Let me guess, you are part of one of these groups?

These people constitute the MINORITY of port people, and to be brutally honest, I wouldn’t ask any of the supporter groups to walk my dog, let alone decide on major marketing directions.

2. The creation of the Planet Teal Zone for kids prior to the game
This has been a great development from the club.

I actually think it isn’t marketed enough.

I would be very interested in seeing the amount of hits it gets a month...

3. The incorporation of kids in the pre-match entertainment - eg. Planet 22
Good stuff too. Perhaps we are doing too much?

+ many others!

As I said, no matter what the Club do, there are always people going to bag them!
Whilst this is true constructive criticism, transparency and complete accountability is healthy for any organisation.

If John James gets the Heritage Strip across the line, he would have done enough for me to vote for him again.

This float thing isn’t an absolute killer. It’s the list of things I mentioned earlier that have combined to make me feel this way.

This isn't the Planet Teal Website, but in fact a tent they have set up at home games with games, giveaways, prizes and player appearances set up OUTSIDE the ground. FYI, it proved so popular at the Roos game last week, they ran out of kids' tickets to the game they were giving away! Perhaps you don't think it's marketed enough because you choose not to take interest in it and the fact the Zone only applies to kids!

It is difficult to get people to the game. I am not denying that.

But...these things are KPI's for James. If he doesn't deliver, the cold hard facts are that he has not performed in this area.

I will also point out that AFL attendance is at an all time high, other clubs can do it, why cant we? (freo a good example).

2. We still aren’t wearing a B&W heritage strip on heritage round - that's not the PAFC's fault. Blame the AFL!
Are you sure you're not a Norwood supporter?

With this sort of thinking we would still be playing Norwood. ;)

We should be telling the AFL to quite frankly, cram it up their arse ....

3. The "Hey Kids!, make a Power guernsey and we will wear it against Richmond!" disgrace - Don't know much about this to comment
There is a competition out there for school kids to design a guernsey. The winner will get to see it, on game day, as it will be worn by the Power vs Richmond

DISGRACE

4. This introduction of a "funk squad" - a lot of people, particularly the kids enjoy this!
Great! I am saying I don’t.

5. The introduction of a plastic float to be carried around before the game - FYI, it's not plastic!!! It's actually very impressive!
I’m sure it is. It’s more the concept and principle that I am against

6. The lack of drive for interstate support/membership - again, can't comment as I don't know enough about it.
Speak to dk about this one.

There is an abundance of support for the Power up north yet the club does not seek it out...?

Why?

7. The obsession with the corporate world - all clubs need $$$!!!!
All clubs need premierships. You need money to facilitate that, but money is the tool, not the goal.

I actually didn't know it existed until this year - I've moved my seats around to the Western Wing. Was it going last year ?

I am interstate so I didn't get to see it. Sounds good though :thumbsu:

Can I ask what you think the common trend with all of this marketing stuff is?

Morell, I would love to show you around the player facilities one day. For some reason people think the club is trying to move away from our past, nothing is further from the truth.
Alan Scott headquarters have pre AFL stuff on the walls nearly every 5 meters. All 35 Premiership photos, black and white guernseys, the lot.

Our players are exposed to the PAFC est. 1870 everyday.

Thats good to hear ... now we have to expose the supporters in some small way.

I would be happy to come along!

But Malibu makes a strong point. We shouldn't have to go on tours of the club rooms to re-affirm what the club is all about or where we come from. It should be advertised and marketed. It should be on display at all times.

This is the crux of my argument. Instead of parading floats, we should be marketing the very things you are talking about.

By constantly pandering to kids, we are losing the support of the people who actually buy the tickets for those kids.

They should use the video screen at Footy Park to highlight the greats of the past and the rest of our club's amazing history as part of pre match entertainment.

Up to 5 mins of footage to build up the side coming out would add a great atmosphere to the side coming out on the ground and show the club really promotes the history of our great club to one and all.

Yeah - I mentioned this earlier in the thread. Use the screen and sound system to promote the history and evolution of the club over time. I'd aim for a catchy 30 seconds -> 1 minute, culminating in the guiys coming onto the ground and our current song being played.

EDIT - maybe we could play around a bit and see what we come up with.

They do that sort of thing at the 36er's home games.. gets the crowd going and the players look up at the screen and see greats like Phil Smyth in his playing days..

Good idea DK :thumbsu:

Well to help dispel that myth, maybe once a year they should have an open day where Platnium members and those that purchased a brick as part of the establishment of the headquarters should be allowed to tour the facilities. Have a pre-registration and stagger it throughout the day.

Are you suggesting that people like myself who have followed the PAFC for decades will suddenly stop following the club if the history of the club is not constantly reinforced to us? If so I strongly disagree.

By constantly pandering to kids, we are losing the support of the people who actually buy the tickets for those kids.
Someone once asked me what the English translation of "Pokémon" was and I told them that it is best translated as "if parents are pressured enough they will buy any rubbish to keep their kids quiet" (that's correct, isn't it Pred-san ;))

To me it appears that the club has decided that the best way to grow the supporter base is to target kids. The majority of the kids been targeted probably weren't even born when we played in the SANFL. These may or may not be the kids of existing Power supporters. If they are the kids of existing Power supporters the idea is to get them to want to go to games and to keep wanting to go to games. This will put pressure on their parents to keep taking them. If they are not the kids of Power supporters then it is most likely that their parents are not aligned with any AFL club so these parents may also be dragged into coming to games and even supporting the Power themselves.

If the parents are already taking their kids to the footy they are not going to stop because the pre-game entertainment is aimed at their kids and not them. On the contrary they are more likely to appreciate the fact that it keeps little Johnny's limited concentration span engage a bit longer so he is not whinging about wanting to go home at half time.

Yep. It's an animated depiction of our logo. So it's a (pumping) fist holding a lightning bolt bursting out of the Power logo.

Jeez. I give it a couple of hours before someone with Photoshop skills puts some other bolt in its place.

At the moment it sounds ridiculously embarassing.

I cant agree with any of that and I hope to hell that the club arent making excuses like that to justify the declining membership/attendances.

Freo went from basket case to one of the most impressive off field outfits in the land. We should be looking at their example at how they managed to turn a 60% full stadium into sell outs.

This is the most important thing for the club. We need more members and we need higher attendances. No ifs, no buts, no excuses.

That's a great idea actually and a good challenge to all the Port supporters that post here to come up with a short video (or even just post pics you believe could be used) in a on screen promotion by the club..........

I'm sure with the many talented people we have here and the numerous pics people would have access to we can come up with some great little promotions.

Also as per the long held saying that works in most promotion type activities - Keep It Simple, Stupid.

I dont have access to footage, but I'd invisage some images of the early days, some of those grainy TV shots you see from the old days, and then 80's football. Perhaps then using lighting and thunder clapping to transform the games being shown into AFL games.

Something to fire up the troups prior to the side hitting the ground.
