While everyone is panicking at giving away all our draft picks (me included) and the media are bleating about our list being so old, maybe we need to have a think about the following players

Sandilands
Grover
Dodd
Hayden
Webster
Duffield
Crowley

they all came through the rookie list, along with a few others and are now pretty integral parts of the team. Even a player like Johnno came in the pre-season draft, not the national draft with all the 'stars'. We've cleared the rookie list out this year, so theres 4 spot available for young players - like Kenny said, I think the club know what they are doing.

That thought had crossed my mind as well chook.

In 2004 we were stymied by the fax machine and the trade for Heathblack for pick 27 fell though and the pick was used to get K1W1 Campbell.

Would the club have been better off in 2005 if the fax machine had of worked ?

Most probably.

This is not a dig at Campbell , I am just using it to illustrate a point.

The other danger with loading up on draft picks is that we have to delist 3 players again same time next year.

Loading up the rookie list is tha way to go. That way they have time in the system with comparitivly little pressure and if and when they are ready they have bulked up a bit, are older and are ready to go.

Undoubtedly we have done well in the rookie draft - only issue is this draft does look very tasty indeed.

Gibbs, Gumby, Hansen and Launenwhateverthebiglump look wonderful ....however going down the list there is not the obvious drop off. Gamble yes but everything is a gamble.

Drum was a top 10 pick, Mundy and Schammer a top 20 pick ......top 8 (with the Polly trade) is going to get you in all probability a quality player with a number of years.

No one is hitting panic stations however pick 8 in this years draft would be very nice indeed to hang on to.

Also the rookie list is well played now by all clubs ,....early on it wasnt as well known - and WC have also done very well.

Luckily the fax didn't work, otherwise we would have ended up with Fiora for Simmonds in 2004.

So you are saying that you prefer rookie draft picks to national draft picks? You are only of that opinion because you know that we are going to trade our first (and probably second) national draft pick, and that is your justification for paying over the odds. Just like you supported our pursuit of Hay 12 months ago.

What pick did we use for Polak? 4? Now we're trading him. The draft is a gamble just like rookie listings and player trades. Sure I'd prefer to use the draft picks this year, but the Freo big wigs think that our window of opportunity is now and they want to boost that opportunity with hardened, proven performers. Its a gamble, but I guess you have to roll the dice to win the big one.
