There have been plenty of songs composed in praise of deities but how many are there critical? Here is one of the more famous ones.
Dear God by XTC. The last verse rant by composer singer Andy Partridge is tells of his beliefs.......

I won't believe in heaven and hell
No saints, no sinners, no devil as well
No pearly gates, no thorny crown
You're always letting us humans down
The wars you bring, the babes you drown
Those lost at sea and never found
And it's the same the whole world 'round
The hurt I see helps to compound
That Father, Son and Holy Ghost
Is just somebody's unholy hoax
And if you're up there you'd perceive
That my heart's here upon my sleeve

If there's one thing I don't believe in
It's you
Dear God

Propagandhi's Haillie Sellasse, Up Your Ass is a more brutal attack

You speak of Rastafari, but how can you justify belief
In a god that's left you behind?
You've simply filled the gap between the upper and lower class
And your faith merely keeps you in line.
An amalgamation of jewish scripture and christian thought.
What will that get you? Not a **** of a lot.
Take a look at your promised land.
Your deed is that gun in your hand.
Mt. Zion's a minefield. The West Bank. The Gaza Strip.
Soon to be parking lots for American tourists and fascist cops.
**** zionism. **** militarism. **** americanism.
**** nationalism. **** religion.

Can anyone add more?

RUSH: Faithless

I've got my own moral compass to steer by
A guiding star beats a spirit in the sky
And all the preaching voices -
Empty vessels of dreams so loud
As they move among the crowd
Fools and thieves are well disguised
In the temple and market place

Like a stone in the river
Against the floods of spring
I will quietly resist

Like the willows in the wind
Or the cliffs along the ocean
I will quietly resist

I don't have faith in faith
I don't believe in belief
You can call me faithless
I still cling to hope
And I believe in love
And that's faith enough for me

I've got my own spirit level for balance
To tell if my choice is leaning up or down
And all the shouting voices
Try to throw me off my course
Some by sermon, some by force
Fools and thieves are dangerous
In the temple and market place

Like a forest bows to winter
Beneath the deep white silence
I will quietly resist

Like a flower in the desert
That only blooms at night
I will quietly resist

Imagine there's no Heaven
It's easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people
Living for today

Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace

You may say that I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will be as one

Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world

You may say that I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will live as one

Judith by A Perfect Circle

You're such an inspiration for the ways
That I'll never ever choose to be
Oh so many ways for me to show you
How the savior has abandoned you
F*ck your God
Your Lord and your Christ
He did this
Took all you had and
Left you this way
Still you pray, you never stray
Never taste of the fruit
You never thought to question why

It's not like you killed someone
It's not like you drove a hateful spear into his side
Praise the one who left you
Broken down and paralyzed
He did it all for you
He did it all for you

Oh so many many ways for me to show you
How your dogma has abandoned you
Pray to your Christ, to your god
Never taste of the fruit
Never stray, never break
Never---choke on a lie
Even though he's the one who did this to you
You never thought to question why

Not like you killed someone
It's Not like you drove a spiteful spear into his side
Talk to Jesus Christ
As if he knows the reasons why
He did it all for you
Did it all for you
He did it all for you

You say there's freedom
Within our nature
Well I don't think you understand
Mother Earth has fallen to Mother Man
The Air, the Sea, the Grass, the Trees,
The nemesis is the major,
Fearless leader Mother Man

Come on take a look
At what's become
Of the existence that leads
Or so we think
That's always a popular phrase
It suits the laws written
By dear Mother Man,
Those heavy hands

What man creates man will surely destroy
The rule of thumb
In the mouths of little boys
Earth spins delight
We kill everything in sight
To serve the needs
And all purple skies will bleed

And a bird flies weak
Against polluted skies
Before it dies
And nature becomes illegal
According to rules
Made by fools

Sift through the information
Everlasting hesitation
To reveal all knowing vices
All the compomising prices
Untouched by the law binders
Setting standards to remind us
That the ink has dried
Behind the goal
We wish to achieve is gone

Oh, songs for atheists... :p

The incomparable genius of Grant McLelland:

Five Words

It starts with a birthstone
And ends with a tombstone
Cathedrals in london,
Cathedrals in rome, all stone.

And I just say (what do you say? )
And I just say (what do you say? )
Bury them dont keep em.
And I just know (what do you know? )
And I just know (what do you know? )
Bury them dont keep em.

Praise to the vision
That pays for the angel.
Coins in communion
Ring like a halo.*

Lay me down
On my knees
By my bed
At night.

Lay me down
On my knees
By my bed
At night.

Hail to the generals
But hell to the public.
Bows for the bishop
And bones for believers.

Chorus

Rap, rap, rap on the lid.
Rap, rap, rap on the lid.
Bury them dont keep em etc.

Don't know if you ever came across the band Smudge,Contra but they were mighty good.

One of their best works.

Don't Want To Be Grant McLennan

Just want to be myself
But it all sounds like someone else
Everytime i play
Here comes that musical cliche
And it gets from bad to worse
Round the time of the second verse
Heres a great song i wrote
So good it doesn't rhyme

Want be like Robert Forster and rock and roll from heaven
But the songs i write in the middle of the night make me sound like Grant
McLennan
Don't wanna be Grant McLennan
Don't wanna be Grant McLennan
Paul Mcartney Ringo Starr
George Harrison and John Lennon
Don't wanna be Grant McLennan
Don't wanna be Grant McLennan
Don't wanna be

And the song has slowed down a pace
Got this pained expression on my face
Easy come easy go
Cos i want you to know
That i didn't know someone could be so lonesome
Didn't know a person could give off so much emotion

Want to be like Robert Forster and rock and roll from heaven
But the songs i write in the middle of the night make me sound like Grant
McLennan
Don't wanna be Grant McLennan
Don't wanna be Grant McLennan
Paul Mcartney Ringo Starr
George Harrison and John Lennon
Don't wanna be Grant McLennan
Don't wanna be Grant McLennan
Don't wanna be

This thread is incomplete without Trent Reznor being involved...

He sewed his eyes shut because he is afraid to see
He tries to tell me what I put inside of me
Hes got the answers to ease my curiosity
He dreamed up a God and called it Christianity

Your God is dead and no one cares
If there is a hell I will see you there

He flexed his muscles to keep his flock of sheep in line
He made a virus that would kill off all the swine
His perfect kingdom of killing, suffering and pain
Demands devotion atrocities done in his name

Your God is dead and no one cares
Drowning in his own hypocrisy
And if there is a hell I will see you there
Burning with your God in humility

Will you die for this?

Nine Inch Nails - Heresy

RELIGION - Public Image Limited

Stained glass windows keep the cold outside
While the hypocrites hide inside
With the lies of statues in their minds
Where the Christian religion made them blind
Where they hide
And prey to the God of a bitch spelled backwards is dog
Not for one race, one creed, one world
But for money
Effective
Absurd

Do you pray to the Holy Ghost when you suck your host
Do you read who’s dead in the Irish Post
Do you give away the cash you can’t afford
On bended knees and pray to lord

Fat pig priest
Sanctimonious smiles
He takes the money
You take the lies
This is religion and Jesus Christ
This is religion cheaply priced
This is bibles full of libel
This is sin in eternal hymn
This is what they’ve done
This is your religion
The apostles were eleven
Now there’s a sod in Heaven

This is religion
There’s a liar on the altar
The sermon never falter
This is religion
Your religion

I was going to bring up Bad Religion too, but that thunder was stolen earlier.

I would say that The Exploited would be pretty close to summing it up the best with F**k Religion, with the chorus:

F**k religion, pile of shit X3
Stick it up your ass

(if I remember correctly)

Haha, good old Exploited.

Muse- Thoughts of a Dying Atheist.

took the words right out of my keyboard... happens to be one of my favourite muse songs too, too bad they don't really play it live much...

Yeah, the only time I've heard it live, on the Absolution tour DVD, it wasn't overly great. It is one of my favourite Muse songs though.

An appropriate song for an atheist is Highway to hell, because thats were they are going when they die.:D:D:D No no just joking. I reckon thats a pretty clever joke actually.
