I wrote this awhile ago for a uni writing course, and just re-discovered it. Enjoy.

Sonnet
Across the red continent fair
A game is played ‘neath skies of grey
Draws thousands strong to witness there
The battle each winter Saturday

Two armies vast in colours bold
They fight to see the glory won
To raise the flag so all be told
That victory at last is done

And every time the song is sung
The memories come crashing back
And then a new year is begun
To test defence and test attack

To hold the golden chalice high
And stand upon the field of green
As Others have in days gone by
And justly known by all and seen

But if away from victory fate does steer
Then hear the tale “there’s always next year”
