On Friday I went to the gym to do a full upper-body workout (for the first time in months) and my muscles are still sore. My left tricep is so painful I can barely move my arm. Any advice on how to loosen the muscles in my arms, shoulders and chest would be appreciated.

Cheers.

Time really I mean you need rest days between gym sessions so best advice I can give is drink allot of liquid and just give it a day or so.
The kind of soreness your experiencing is usually only a 24 hour thing.

Well yeah, I've experienced a similar thing in my legs after an intense running session after footy training, but nothing this bad. I used to go to the gym three times a week but have never felt this kind of pain before. I'm aware that the pain is only temporary but would (static or dynamic) stretching help loosen the muscles? If so, which stretching exercises would be best?

Definately make sure to stretch whatever body parts you worked, after a day or two gentle massage does wonders in loosening the muscle up.

A nice warm bath, add a few drops of peppermint essential oil and basil essential oil. Then get someone to give you a massage. Works perfectly. Guarantee it!

A couple of years ago when I played soccer I overstretched my groin. Very annoying....

You probably just have a lactic acid build up. It happens when you haven't been to the gym for even a few weeks and go do a heavy session straight off. Generally takes a few days to completely go away, depending on how stiff it is.

Don't exercise.

This is pure genius, of course. Unfortunately, few brilliant ideas work even on the rare occasions when they are adopted. Why? Because you still are forced to leave your brilliant idea in the hands of idiots to execute.

A good lift will leave you sore. It's a 'good' sore though and some stretching before and after helps mitigate the effect. Chronic weight lifters are chroncally sore.

This tricep thing sounds more like an injury from over-doing it. In that case the best thing to do is put ice on it at first and heat on it later. Ice decreases blood flow to the area and prevents the painful swelling. The heat applied later opens up the vascular network in your triceps and keeps the swelling (more blood and edematous fluid) down and is quite soothing. Aids in the healing process.

It's too late for the ice, but not the heat. Take some ordinary stuff like tylenol for a few days. If the pain and tightness persists for more than a week, go to the doctor. He'll probably prescribe and anti-inflammatory, but if you whine it up good, you might also get a muscle relaxer.

Peace,
