Sorted-out Sampi back with Bulldogs
15th November 2008, 8:00 WST
Gifted forward Ashley Sampi has returned to WA and hopes to resurrect his career with South Fremantle next season.
The former West Coast highflyer played eight matches for Port Fairy, 290km west of Melbourne, this year after being overlooked by AFL clubs during the pre-season draft.
“Obviously you take any of your former players back, and someone like Ashley Sampi is definitely going to create a lot of excitement around the club,” Bulldogs football manager Jason Burton said.
“The thing that has impressed us the most is that Ashley contacted us. He’s got himself a job and has sorted his life out away from footy. Now there’s a bit less pressure on him, he wants to come back and have a bit of fun again.”
A first-round selection at No. 6 in the 2001 national draft, Sampi played 78 games for the Eagles before being de-listed last year.
The 24-year-old is best remembered for taking the AFL’s mark of the year in 2004.
South have wasted little time preparing for 2009, also signing tall utility player Jaymie Graham and experienced VFL midfielder Nathan Street.
Street, 25, is the younger brother of Peter Street, a 211cm ruckman who played 78 games in eight seasons with Geelong and the Western Bulldogs before being de-listed by the Bulldogs last month.
He played 117 games for former VFL club Tassie Devils and is a cousin of South Fremantle squad member Sam Fielding.
Street will help cover the loss of utility player Simon O’Keefe, who has returned to Victoria for personal reasons.
Bulldog officials are hopeful Jeff Farmer will play on next year, but the mercurial forward has also been linked with rival WAFL club Peel.
Burton is still trying to make contact with Clayton Collard, another former South Fremantle forward who was de-listed by Richmond last month.
And ex-South Fremantle midfielder Theo Adams is believed to be looking at a return to the Bulldogs after two seasons with rival port club East Fremantle with whom he recently signed for a further two years.
Persistent knee injuries have forced former South Fremantle, Fremantle and Perth full-back Robbie Haddrill to retire.
