Denilson: Cesc is not a leader

Arsenal midfielder Denilson has hit out at club captain Cesc Fabregas for his lack of leadership abilities, as the Gunners prepare to face Leeds United in their third round FA Cup replay.

The club have had some commanding captains in the form of Tony Adams and Patrick Vieira in the past, but Brazilian star Denilson believes that Fabregas is not up to the task of leading them forward and slammed his team-mate.

"Fabregas is the captain but he is not a leader,'' he told the Sun. ''It's a personality thing and a leader can be young. It's something they are born with.

"We are lacking leadership and we need leadership to go forward. There isn't a leader. I don't see one player as a leader. At Arsenal it's more of a collective team at the moment, everyone is talking - but a leader is always important for a team."

Denilson, 22, also gave his view on the goalkeeping situation at Arsenal and, despite the excellent form of Wojciech Szczesny who is has taken the No. 1 spot in place of the injured Lukasz Fabianski, he believes one goalkeeper stands above the rest.

"The best keeper at Arsenal is Manuel Almunia," he said.

I just think its extraordinary that a guy so young without much experience would slag his Captain in public.

I would have thought an internal meeting would have been the course of action. This cant be good for team morale.

It's not good for Arsenal, because their captain isn't a leader and he wants to move to Barcelona anyway, Song should be captain.

This whole quote is taken out of context. It was an interview conducted by Arsenal Brazil for arseblog.com. Half of the quote was stolen by The Sun (and not credited, mind you) which was then credited to The Sun by every other news that reproduced the story.

In the interview he says that the team has no natural leaders and that to combat this the team must talk more. He says Fabregas is not a natural leader, but he does talk and instruct a lot to help the team.
