If you have Firefox with the Flashgot add-on, you can download the replay. Just downoladed the WC v G NABCUP game
Thanks for this tip.
I tried it (never used Flashgot before), but when I pressed the Flashgot add-on button, it didn't download the game, just other junk on the page.
How do you download the game with it?

First xcuse my poor English, it's not that good, and next time try to be more consistant in your description (other junk, I don't known what that can be).
I downloaded flashgot and tried to use it, the best way after selecting your game and starting to play it, is to right clic on the flashgot button, you are presented a list of files, the one wiith arount 60M is 320p (that fits for screen up to 5 inches) and the one around 120M is 720p (that fits for larger screen), left clic the one you want to download, and miracle download start.
you get in your dowload folder file that names (DAY VIEW something awful), rename it, before starting an other dowload, to known the contents of the files.

Followed your clear instructions. Marvelous! Works perfectly.
Thanks!

Tried downloading using wget and last year's format, but getting 404 error. Can you please let us know what the full path/filenames look like for NAB 2013 games? Thanks.

Just a thought... while the Specky Selector as we've known it has been extremely convenient, it also seems to get negative attention that knocks it offline.

While it would be less convenient - perhaps a description of how to construct the necessary streaming URLs, or perhaps even a "portable" single-file version (if that's possible) that users could run locally on their own browser could be made public on a site like PasteBin.com. A bit more work for the users, perhaps - but less chance of a web host getting nasty about it.

yeah I have done this in the past....the code is just a tiny javascript of about 5kb that will work in any browser or platform .... the problem is that 99.5% of people have no idea that all they need to do is download/extract & double click the file so I gave up doing this .... there are plenty of free web hosts ... I would say it takes about 10,000* more time to take this down than it does to re-post it on some other free web host. There are basically an unlimited number of free places this can live. I can bring it back to life in a matter of a few minutes.

Why don't you make a .zip available with the javascript file and a specky.html file people can double click to run it locally? Just extract both files to desktop and run the html file. As long as you have an internet connection it will work.

Here it is. So anyone can use this for 2012 if they want. The nab cub games seem to be uploaded into random directories which means this could be the end. Unless there is some pattern that I am missing ?????????

Thanks mate that works a treat. Hopefully the season proper has a pattern ;)

How does one see which directories the games are uploaded to? Like the NAB cup games: which directories are they in, and how can one see?
Perhaps if some of us take a look, we can figure out the pattern.
I'd like to give it a shot, at least.

I'm not sure mate. Without spending too much time on it you would look here http://www.afl.com.au/video/latest-videos/nab-cup-replays then open one of the quarters up and look at the source code by pressing F12. Somewhere there it should have a URL to the mp4/wmv/etc. Check enough of them to find similarities.

Well, this is interesting....

As someone coming from the USA, I can watch the NAB Cup replays on either AFL.com.au or BigPondTV.com - and the URLs are the same except for the numbers added right before the file extension. Premiership season games from last year are still geo-locked - though they haven't updated the referral, it still shunts me over to livesport.tv. ;) I suppose the NAB Cup not being locked down isn't really all that shocking considering that the AFL decided to let people overseas watch the NAB Cup for free, even through their new provider - but it is interesting.

Even if there's a pattern to the subdirectories - the numbers added to the end of the filename (at least for the higher-bitrate versions) would seem to be another obstacle. Unless someone knows someone who knows someone who knows the pattern - if there is one - it might be incredibly difficult to figure out. Even if it's something as mundane as an incrementing counter, all the other sorts of video clips - interviews, etc. - that they post (and which can vary from round to round) might make it effectively impossible to automatically figure out what it would be for any given game replay.

For what it's worth, I used a program called MediaBox (from hensence.com) to "sniff" the video URLs for the NAB Cup replays. (I'll warn you in advance that MediaBox is ... touchy, and doesn't like Windows 7 - so I run it in a WinXP virtual machine. But it helps download stuff no other program I've found will touch....)

If indeed there's no practical way to have a Specky Selector going forward ... I hope someone with access is willing to sniff the URLs every week and whack 'em into PasteBin or something. ;)

You need Firefox with a plugin. I use a firefox plugin called "live http headers" but there is also a very good plugin called "media stealer" :

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-us/firefox/addon/media-stealer/

Install this plugin, goto the flash video you want to download & then in firefox you just click "tools, media stealer" which will present a link to the source file. You can then either download the source file or copy the URL to it.

In this example URL to the bris v carlton nab cup final:

telstra.com/PlatformRelease/477/552/01-02-37-4-1_NAB_GF_CARL_V_BRIS_4THQ__876671.mp4

We need to know if there is a pattern to the directories 477/552 and the number in the filename 876671 ... or are these random ? I have looked at a few URL's but I cannot see a pattern ... maybe I am missing it ?

Thanks for this! I'm gonna get on to it over the weekend, and get back to you. I'll see if I can figure something out, or if I have some idea about what the direction may be.
Do you say that it will be ready only after Round 1, because you hope to figure out the pattern by observing what they do in Round 1?
BTW, how come you're not concerned that the AFL might track you down, and sue?

This is great but the only problem is that I can't access the finals and NAB Cup but still great otherwise. Love your work man.

colin_wood,
I have been trying to do what you instruct. I installed the media-stealer plug in, went to the bris v carlton nab cup final, pressed the media-stealer button, which opens a window for me with information about the URL. But the URL that I get when I do this, is very different from what you describe.
E.g. for the first quarter, I get:
http://videos.rightster.com//secure...f8bd8cd05003ac1952316d522de16519531a2b55f734c
This actually sends you to the video, which can then be downloaded or viewed, but it is not what you wrote.
The 2nd Q is the same style but with a different number which looks pretty random, or generated.
I see that in your instructions, you say to go to "tools, media stealer", but for the life of me, I can't find "tools" in Firefox. Sorry to bother me, but what am I doing wrong?

Thats because you are on the aftv site. The afltv videos are password protected with a cookie. Go here http://www.afl.com.au/video/latest-videos/nab-cup-replays to view the publicly available videos of the NAB cup.

Okay. It's wee hours of the morning here (east coast, USA), so my comprehension skills are not what they usually are. I'm sure this all will make more sense once I've gotten some sleep, but for now, my question is a simple one:

Is there going to be a specky selector site for 2013 (with past seasons included)?

Thanks a million (which is probably only several hundred thousand in oz).
colin_wood is working on it. Due to changes, it is more challenging than previous years, and he needs to see how things are done over the next weekend to see whether it will be possible to put up the site. If it is, then the earliest possible will be after this weekend's games.
Stay patient, and whoever you barrack for, pray hard for colin_wood!
