Does Petracca want to stay out of the spotlight though?

Considering membership and home game attendance is going up the Gold Coast isnt the anonymous sporting hub southerners think it is. They basically have everything Adelaide has just on a smaller scale except for schoolies and rich people and sun. Is Adelaide better to build his side business, sure! however Gold Coast isnt that far behind.

Gold Coast averaged 15k people this year, a large percentage of them would be opposition supporters as well at best he will be playing in front of crowds of 20k by the time he retires if he goes there... They are minnows, I get the appear if you are a young draftee but a seasoned pro going there will get a shock.

We have the 4th highest average home crowds in the league, 45k+.

My bet Petracca stays at Melbourne. He's forced Melbournes hand with him and Oliver. It doesn't seem a coincidence that Oliver has been told he's out.

Definitely interesting.

Only an assumption. With Petracca potentially going, Melbourne could be posturing to ensure a club takes on his entire contract. Which if thats the case it also can explain why Oliver is going because they can gid rid of him with a salary deal and with petraccas salary off the books it neutralizes the damage. Where as if they keep petracca they are virtually paying $3m per season for one player. If the figures mentioned earlier are somewhat correct.

If Melbourne plan on paying such a huge chank of Olivers deal though, something is off. Wonder if something is coming down the pipeline we dont know?

Has anyone seen any reports of Petracca having a medical with the Suns? I mean, he may have. It's possible.

It seems that him doing a medical with us is pretty far down the road when it comes to player and potential club working together. Why would he agree to a medical if he was truly not sure which club he wants to be traded to? He could've said, no thanks, I just flew in for a chat.

Can anyone elaborate on what an actual "medical" is though? I'm assuming it's an open wide and say ahh, optometry check, bend over and cough type of test he clearly would be able to do in the trackies and hoodie he flew in and out of Adelaide in...and not a 2k time trial and skin fold "fitness-type" test.

im not arguing, crowd figures speak for themselves. But making and winning finals will quickly make them a hot ticket in town. But if we put crowd size as the beacon to every players want then every player will just chase Collingwood. The enjoyment is the crucial factor and I think he will pick the club he thinks he will enjoy playing at the most.

Fancy having the first job of the new fitness guy and tell the club that Petracca failed the fitness test and has poor prospects of attaining his previous high fitness levels.

Talk about a pressure career maker/breaker decision...even before you start.

Im sure it will happen in due course. Maybe Gold Coast simply concentrated on the discussion and tour and they will fly him back for the medical if he chooses them. According to what i looked up its fairly common for players not to have a medical straight away. The fact he chose to have one in Adelaide could actually mean we are strong favourites but he is doing his due diligence and meeting with GC as he still might prefer them. But the medical is an excellent sign for us.

Still until he is in a Crows polo in trade week, none of this matters.

Or that he prefers the Suns and so the Crows nudged Turner to save face and adjust the fans’ expectations.
Or Melbourne know that Petracca is in the market, and they're making it clear through the media sources that they're going to be a little bit difficult. Petracca could put his chips in with us and be stuck in Melbourne, or he could say GCS who overpay and he gets to leave

We weren’t linked to Peatling until the 2nd week of trade period last year, with 5 other clubs in the hunt before us, wtf are people losing their shit for 3 days before it even starts?
Because that's what they do here shit the bed before any decision is made last it was peatling wont pick us ,same old same old crap just wait till it happens one way or the other ffs

Wait. Which post of mine did a mod delete for being “unnecessary”? A bit of clarification would be alright. I don’t think I posted anything bad.

Was it calling “journalists” parasites? Where is the lie?

And I’m not even drunk yet…
Was the post about Nicks being a shit game day coach

This thread is rumours only, not facts

Plus there's 1 or 2 other threads for that discussion

Tom Rehn actually went with the same info on Petracca and Oliver as that Matt Turner article on 5AA last night, which was before that article came out, so seems very deliberate messaging.

He did expand on Petracca and said we are definitely very keen, but also conscious of Melbourne being very difficult with the Petty deal and burning us a couple of years ago. It does seem Melbourne are making it clear they will be difficult with Petracca and will need to get massive overs to accept a deal.

GC attendance going up - you are giving this a bit of mayo

There average attendance this year at home was 17,000, there home crowd capacity caps out at 23,000 - there training facilities are still not AFL standard

There is no comparison between the two options from the size and brand of a football club, add membership, corporate exposure and sponsorship

There is no comparison

Yes GC has beaches - it’s not a foodie culture, whether that comes into his decision - who knows

They've been saying that from the beginning though. There's been an assumption that's just bluster but maybe it isn't.

It's interesting that Hardwick wants him as a forward who pinch hits in the midfield. We already have enough of those. Maybe our pitch to him was the opposite.

There's no guarantee Oliver walks - if the Dees are banking on that to keep Petracca they might end up with egg on their face.

Heading into October - no way I thought the Dees would trade both Oliver and Petracca

All the messaging was Oliver and Dees back in love, Petracca has been given permission to explore a trade

They appoint King, he decides to finish duties with Geelong 2-3 weeks, players had exit meeting and Oliver told he won’t be traded, whereas Trac told happy for you to have a look.

3 weeks later - Dees and King, flip the script

This has now been 2-3 years of inconsistent messaging and the club flip-flopping on there position with these two stars

I could see a world where Trac stays, I don’t think he would be happy, but I also think now they have pushed Oliver out it also sends a message that a club would need to pay up big time for Trac

Melbourne have cocked this up though. Tell Trac to explore, then Trac says he wants out, then Melbourne kick Clarry out and suggest they'd be happy for Trac to stay. I mean, that's amateur.

They undermined their contract position when they green lighted him looking around. Trac has wanted out 2 years in a row now and there's not a snowballs he stays there next year, so Melbourne will have to do a deal. Getting the deal done will be difficult, but not as difficult as it would have been if we were being seen to be "prising out a required player". Trac will get to where he wants to go.

If Merrett took the “go nuclear” option and orchestrated a media interview airing grievances with the club, highlighting what a shit show it is, as well as selling the fact that he had given everything he had to the club plus more, there is zero way the club can hold him to his contract. Even disregarding what it would do internally, how would the club sell that to the members and fans ?? They simply couldn’t.
He could, i just dont think hes the sort of bloke to do that.

Its one thing to meet other clubs, but given his contract and position within the club he'd have to be prepared to walk back in.

Whereas the Melbourne guys have absolutely gone that option.

You would have to wonder about the legalities. If trac took the contract to court would it be upheld based on what Melbourne have done. It's interesting.

The AFL would never let a contract dispute get to court - I'd imagine Petracca would have some leverage to get the AFL to step in if it came to that though. It wont, it never does, this is all just posturing.

Bit of info
  • club still waiting on Petracca decision
  • still believe he will leave the demons
  • believe the move to push Oliver out and pay his half his contact helps Adelaide get a deal done as we can accomodate Petracca contact and salary which offsets the trade price

I agree. That's why there are stuff in the contracts to deal with this. I'm just curious as to just what power Melbourne still have. As you said, they have been amateur.
