I think our messaging re Petracca is more to do with publicly broadcasting that we are prepared to walk away

Ie Melbourne can't ask for anything ridiculous
If we know he has already chosen us but its not public, then your comment could be right over the target. Media messaging to start the conditioning process assuming we are sure he can't go back to Melbourne and they are bluffing about taking him back

Tom Rehn actually went with the same info on Petracca and Oliver as that Matt Turner article on 5AA last night, which was before that article came out, so seems very deliberate messaging.

He did expand on Petracca and said we are definitely very keen, but also conscious of Melbourne being very difficult with the Petty deal and burning us a couple of years ago. It does seem Melbourne are making it clear they will be difficult with Petracca and will need to get massive overs to accept a deal.
It will be interesting but will be hard from an optics point of view to be dealing Oliver for virtually nothing then hold out for a kings ransom for Petracca. Both got multiple years on big money still and playing pretty well considering the sides form. Petracca a bit older but doesn’t have the baggage, but in reality both are absolute A grade stars at their best and are on similar deals.

Bit of info
  • club still waiting on Petracca decision
  • still believe he will leave the demons
  • believe the move to push Oliver out and pay his half his contact helps Adelaide get a deal done as we can accomodate Petracca contact and salary which offsets the trade price
Thanks Shutts :p

That makes sense, especially with Rehn referencing the club felt they got burnt in the Petty dealings a couple of years ago. Doesn’t sound like Melbourne are an easy club to deal with at the trade table.

Oliver has gone overseas, so how does a club actually do any due diligence on him? Medical, interview etc?
Only GWS had the opportunity, so its GWS or Dees.... for this reason as no club will tske on Olivier's 5 year contract (or part of) without a thorough due diligence.

Hence his Casey Demons comment as he prefers to stay.

Wouldn't it be the opposite as it means they have $600K more in the salary cap to absorb Petracca's salary so the trade capital will be higher and we will need to offer more than pick 14. It's no coincident this occurred before Petracca's expected decision in the next few days.

they can want as much as they like. Considering their obvious posturing, clubs may call them out on their bullshit.

Because Melbourne is willing to absorb $700K of his salary so are enticing at least some trade capital and the highest bidder will likely get him, provided he wants to go there.

I’m not terribly disappointed losing Petracca given age and what it would cost. Although have to question how the **** they are affording all these players in their cap.

But I will be disappointed if we don’t address our midfield.

There HAS to be another target.
Melbourne is absorbing a big portion of his salary so they can get a better trade capital.

They havent got a lot on their list. They would have room in their cap.

Not a huge surprise.

It was always going to come down to location and club setup.

Gold Coast is a more desirable location for the average person and the club is primed for success under a proven premiership winner
