What's this crap of the blues getting pick 19 (silvagni - now 20 i guess) and 9 (tdk)... i thought the free agency compensation was supposed to be a cumulative result based on the entirety of your f.a. movements or has that gone by the wayside now and you get a herbs and spices pick for every player you lose?

Throwing names out there

We all know how cooked Essendon's Fitness Department was, we want an extractor and accumulator

What is Darcy Parish worth? Bombers are looking at a rebuild

Or too risky
Categorically NO, and yes I'm yelling N. O. as in NO!!!

No it was never a cumulative result. Always per player.

Can’t wait to see him, but we are going to need a big body around him and I very much rate Jack Steele in a Dunkley type role if we can’t get any better.
We need a big body mid but it ain't Jack Steele.

He's well and truly on the downhill slide if you go on what he's produced this year.

He’s also only gettable next year

He’d be an excellent get then, but we really need someone now
Totally agree, but rejecting Petracca on a 5 year x $1.4?m contract was the right move IMO.

Jack Steele was All Australian and AFLPA most courageous player in 2021, the same year Petracca won his Norm Smith.

Not suggesting Steele is as good as Petracca and certainly his 2025 was down, but over 2020 - 2023, he polled 20, 26, 13 and 15 votes in the Brownlow.

I'm also not chasing Steele out of the club, he's been great, but if he wants out, he will improve any side with a weak midfield.

Lucky. We almost repeated the Bryce Gibbs disaster. He would have been 35 on expiry and big money.

Yes, we did the right thing by walking away. Key words though, “asked the Crows”. Nothing suggesting he requires that from the Suns, would have been easy to report accurately if true. Question is why did he need more to play for us? My view is that he would have reasonable concerns about longevity with us, given our current midfield group and strategy.

Forget Oliver.. GWS has him stitched up. Jack Steele? just read on twitter the Crows and West Coast looking at him..
Don't mind the idea of Steele as adds experienced midfield depth.

He's not a gun like Petracca, but he is solid. We need more options as we can't keep running our main midfielders into the ground.

He's not ideal but if we're not getting a world-beater (which we're not) we only need someone that can use their big body to find the pill and hold up defensively. It shouldn't be that hard for someone to plug into that role. I don't think he'd cost much more than our picks in the 40s. Salary would be the ? but if it's not ridiculous I'm open to the idea.

I don't necessarily disagree, but he's the same age as Petracca for context.

Big No from me.

Wish it didn't come to this, but desperate times and all that. Still got 2 years left on his deal, you'd think it'd be a non-negotiable that he's not getting any sort of extension if he's moving down.

Yep, he's had a shit year.

Having said that, a lot more competition for the Saints BnF this year than Melbourne's. Hard to name a Melbourne player who could hold their head up high this season other than Max Gawn. Whereas a lot of Saints players had good to very good years - at least compared to their expectations/previous output.

Steele must have got the 2025 John Cena Award

We’ve got a gap to make up to genuinely compete in September. And midfield is the obvious area needing immediate improvement. If he’s cheap enough at the trade table, grabbing him for 2 years wouldn’t be a bad idea.

What about Alex Davies? He will see even less midfield time now that the Suns will land Petracca.

Somebody sell me Steele.

Is cheap is probably the big sell. That said, it's hard to see what he brings that Peatling doesn't. Seeing there hasn't been too many years where Steele has been a big clearance winner.

Not too much wrong with Kossie and Jack Bowey's seasons.

He's not a gun like Petracca, but he is solid. We need more options as we can't keep running our main midfielders into the ground.

And on that and Petracca, compared to Suns’ role, he’d have been cognisant of being run into the ground with us. Hence, the extra $ and year. As all of us would require if we knew we were heading to a shallow midfield strategy as the only genuine big bodied ball winner.

Well when the names, Parish and Steele are being mentioned he makes a hell of a lot more sense from a list point of view.

Steele's issue is he's got no versatility and if you play as an inside mid only, you need to be a gun. He's an upgrade on Berry for mine but he's on the downhill slope. We can only play Berry or Steele next year, not both. I would go after him but not be devo if he goes elsewhere. We need more dynamic full time midfielders that can run - the days of the slower inside mids that lack athleticism are going as you need to be able to cover ground defensively these days.

That's true.

Steele finished 6th in 2024 and 9th in 2023 when we played finals.

It's possible that he's suffering under Ross Lyon coaching/desire to play the kids/whatever. Also possible the game has gone past him Clayton Oliver style, without the off field issues.

Agreed. That sounds like pragmatic list planning.
It does, but I posted just recently (but accidentally deleted it), that I'd have given Tex's first born and anything else being asked, to have a mid like Petracca play for us over the next two-three years while we're in the premiership window. I'd wear the shitshow at the end of his career while we'd still be paying him $mill+ if it snagged us a premiership in the meantime,... but what if it didn't? Probably a sensible move by us but sometimes you have to take crazy chances to reach the ultimate.
