Why would we make Luko our highest paid player?

Our recruitment last year was not about throwing wads of cash around. It was targeted in areas we lacked depth in. Midfield and genuine experience.

Luko plays a role our depth chart is good, we play 3 kpfs plus Burgess/T Murray and Welsh.

And I just can't see us offering more than Port.

That sounds more like Tealster myth to make themselves feel better about what their club did.
True, he might had been feed misinformation to justify the club offering Lukosius 6 years at $1M. They really are the new Carlton.

West Coast compared to Richmond is showing how important it is to keep stability and experience in defense during a rebuild.

No way I'd move on Lever or May, but they absolutely should move on Viney, Salem, Langdon and a few others
Yes, though tbf to WC I doubt they thought McGovern, for example, was going to be hammered with injury and forced into retirement over successive concussions

There might be steak knives involved but it definitely won't be a star player

The closest example is probably what Geelong gave up for Jeremy Cameron after GWS matched the free agency offer. They only gave up pick 13, 15 and 20 and somehow received two second round picks back
This is what I am thinking. The Crows will push for 2x Firsts plus a 2nd as the starting point. Then 2x firsts plus a 'steak knives' player. Last resort would be 3 x firsts, but in that instance we would need something back from the Saints like a 2nd rounder.

They can't have thought he had long left at 33 years old.
True, but he'd signed an extension through to the end of 2026

Barrass was interesting. Kind of figure he had 1 foot out the door and he was 1 of the few players they would get something reasonable back for

Allen, Shuey and Yeo plagued by injury hasn't helped them much

I wonder how we pull this off and not cause ourselves a problem.

We still need more depth, we won't always have basically zero injuries.

Are we confident that Draper (yes), Edwards, Ryan, Welsh, etc come through and be A graders? Better to have our picks if not?

Can we get anything trading out Sholl, Schoenberg, Crouch, Borlase? Probably not.

I have no doubt Ben Williams his manager lead Port to believe we would pay Luko so much.

But no way there was ever an actual offer.

From a list management perspective Luko makes no sense for us. But much needed for Port.

Ben Williams played it well for his client.

Especially if we were led to believe he wanted to play forward.

He wouldn't get a game for us as a forward.

All he'd have been good for would be getting in Curtin's way on the wing.

He could have been alright as a Tex replacement or on the other wing but it would have been a 1m luxury.

Yes we have locked in a great core playing group. I'm not convinced contracts aren't reasonably easily broken when the right suitor with the right money comes knocking. We have some very desirable players who won't be immune to this.

Maybe, but they all seem to love their mates and playing together. It seems like something that's going really well.

If its Port we will know in 4 weeks when they are done for the year along with St.K

And if still radio silence, then he's West Lakes bound
I was about to ask that question about announcement timing.

But once his team has finished, what's stopping him from announcing then. After all, he'd surely tell st kilda at their season end whether he wants to stay or request a trade. That is the first stage of the process surely.

I think you are right. My guess is we were keen to get him if he came at the right price. We had to stay at the table in case picks became involved or GC picked up half his salary.

I don't believe we were all in on his whole salary and trading out first round picks.

I agree. You hear about these things that somehow we were saved from doing to ourselves - and they all seem a bit unreal.

His team was finished a few weeks ago!

Yeah after the last game they have exit meetings and he would say there his intentions
While we are still playing I doubt he would say that he wants to head our way publicly

West Coast has a whole range of issues. Defense is only a small part of it.

They kept too many players on for far too long. A multiyear deal for McGovern? The same for Yeo and Duggan?

They needed to trade when they had value. Now they're left with valueless pieces and zero assets for a rebuild.

Melbourne should look to trade May - because he's an absolute flog - as well as Oliver and Petracca. Only Trac will get them anything, but it should be two good pieces for him.

See what market there is for Salem and Langdon - there might be something. Viney can't be given away.

Then sack Goodwin.

They have been hitting the draft, but they need to back again and hard.

Do you want depth or A graders?

We're stacked for possible A graders, and adding NWM just amplifies this.

It really is a bit of nothing article, no new info beyond (lol):

"A number competition sources said Port Adelaide’s financial offer for Wanganeen-Milera would exceed that of the Crows, who sit second on the ladder with several stars in their line-up and poised to enter a premiership window. Both clubs, however, have presented Wanganeen-Milera with serious options that would secure his financial future."
and
"The Saints have considerably upped their offer to Wanganeen-Milera. He now stands to earn more than $1.4 million per season if he stays at the club, where he has a good relationship with coach, Ross Lyon, and teammates."

Luko is far from a Tex replacement.

Not smart or skilled enough.

Seeing him get caught htb on the wing with no left side against Hawthorn showed he is no Tex.

Also this article from The Age

I didn't think much about when I first heard it about it. Seems to be getting a bit of traction now though:

"Significantly, Collingwood’s financial offer is almost identical to that of the Blues – both offers are in the mid-$600,000 per season – which means Silvagni’s decision will have little to do with money.
Given his ability to play in various positions and the fact he will cost less than $700,000 per season, Silvagni may attract more bidders than Collingwood before the October trade period.
Multiple sources at clubs, and those close to Silvagni, suggested it was unlikely he and Carlton would be able to mend their relationship and extend his time at the Blues into 2026."

Interesting, why would Port Power need to offer him more.......
