No big name recruit close to 30 has never worked out for us in the modern era, putting aside Jarman and possibly Pods, although he may not be a "big name" recruit.

Therefore, my concerns are more about how Petracca will actually go, should we get him, given the way he plays is based on power and burst speed. These would definitely be the first things to go as you get older.

We would also be relying on him heavily, so there no veteran resting here.

He's not like a Pendlebury whos game is more about timing and footballing smarts and vision.
It's completely about power and speed.

I think if we got him, we should trade with the expectation that he won't be the same player, well atleast not for long.
Danger is absolutely fine and he's 35. You're bringing in players like Petracca to help win big finals over 3-5 years, not 5-10 years. Petracca is also as professional as someone like Danger and manages his body well, so I can't see why his power and speed would be tapering off anytime soon.

He's been very durable for a number of years now and the only major block of games he missed was last year.

Kinda like Dangerfield who still goes alright at 35.

Also can cotton wool him as a forward when hes that age like geelong did this year.

Wow we do love a shiny new thing...except....

  • This shiny new thing will be 30 by the time the next season comes around....you cannot argue his best years are behind him, particularly with his injuries..
  • Is reportedly on $1m per year, on a heavily back-ended deal... If it's back ended then he could be still due $4.5m to $5m....
(Value: The deal was reported to be worth over $1 million per season, peaking at $1.7 million annually in the final years, according to The Age.)
- Make no doubt about it this for Melbourne will be as much a salary dump as it is the Crows picking up a very good midfielder..
In no way shape or form is this worth 2 first rounders (even with compo picks etc), I'd be sending them a 2nd rounder and telling them we'll foot the entire bill for his contract.. If they want two first rounders as part of a mini rebuild then I'd be wanting them to cover a chunk of his salary.

Keeping in mind Jack Bowes went to Geelong from GC on a salary cap dump (another Geelong mystery in them absorbing his entire contract) and went WITH a 1st round draft pick. (Pick 7! And yes Bowes is no Petracca, and wasn't really getting game time up on the GC, but he was just in a GF)

'Up on the Gold Coast, the Suns were under salary cap pressure and had told midfielder Jack Bowes – who had two years remaining on a heavily back-ended contract worth around $1.6 million – to explore his options elsewhere.

To sweeten the deal, and to entice rival clubs to take on the remainder of Bowes' contract, the Suns got AFL approval to attach their No.7 draft pick alongside their former Academy talent in a deal that became known across the competition as a 'salary dump'.

Like I said doesn't need a transitioning veteran, it needs an actual full time midfielder.

I'm ok with going for him as long as we have this mindset and understand we're not getting a full time midfielder for many years and pay accordingly.

Excuse me!!!! Two firsts for a 30 year old who will cost us 1.2m a year for five years is ridiculous. Pull your heads in.

One is late first and the other may also be a late first (which Petracca may help with that).

We're not talking super early picks. If we have a disastrous season and finish bottom 4 then oh well.

They've managed him what she well though. Shifting him out of the midfield and more time as forward and giving him actual weeks off now recently.

That's not what we need.

We need a full blown full time midfielder.
2020 through 2024 (age 30-34), Dangerfield’s season-long CBA % went:

Trac may not be quite at his peak levels if he gets to us, but given his injury history since his first year ACL has only been that freak injury last year, I think he can provide similar midfield time to what Danger has done, over those years

💯- some people on here honestly live in a footy world that’s not actually reality - as George Constanza says - it’s not a lie, if you believe it’s true 😂

Peatling is another that says meeting with Nicks was the sealer to his decision - we were in a bunch of clubs chasing him
Get you’re own material mate

Why are people so obsessed with the age of 30 still? It's clear that players with good professionalism are able to play well into their 30s these days without losing any of their strengths. Sports science has also come a long way with recovery techniques since even 10 years ago, especially with the advancement of AI.

Lachie Neale is 32 and was able to play in a GF after a grade 3 calf strain in less than 3 weeks due to the more advanced rehab techniques available to professional athletes these days.

Petracca is worth every ****ing cent. I don't know where people got the idea he's injury prone either, that's never been a problem since the ACL over 10 years ago. He's also never had any major soft tissue injuries.

They're both from S.A. and both barracked for Adelaide growing up. If Petracca is to be won over, the sales pitch will have to be on its own merits.
6 other clubs were chasing Peatling and he cites the meeting with Nicks as important for his decision to chose Adelaide. Relationships have always been his strength.

I don't think we should approach the negotiation with the assumption that he will have the late career of Danger.

Nicks convinced Daws and Rankine, get a grip, people
Agree. Nick's may need support tactically, but being a people's person is one of his strengths. I am sure they will get the right people around Christian and Bella. It's not the Crow's first rodeo. There is strength in working together, complementing each other and using each others various gifts.

Do you guys watch football? Petracca would walk in and be our second or third best player and probably our best pure midfielder.
He's most likely our best chance to challenge for a flag while Dawson is still at or near his peak.
