I stand by my claim that it wasn't a factor.

What you are saying makes no sense anyway. If the players were concerned about success and direction of the club as a primary factor, and Port Adelaide were a legitimate option, they would have picked the club playing finals at the time.

That they didn't suggests other factors, like money, were much more important
"We able to sell a vision that we weren't going to stay at the bottom forever" isn't a hard concept to grasp. Christ, the world you live in is one where every best 22 out of contract player is looking for a trade out and we never attract anybody. It just isn't how things work.

Seems a bit of a stretch to go from "Nicks had no impact recruiting Dawson and Rankine" to "every best 22 player wants a trade out"

I don't think my position is unreasonable at all. The most important factors in our success recruiting players are money and location.

Over the history of the club we have clearly been able to attract more players in when we had a worse list and more salary space available. And we're largely recruited South Australians attracted to the location.

We haven't really had much issue attracting players who desire those things over the years, Nicks or not. Dawson, Rankine, Betts, Gibbs, Thompson, Carey, Jarman... the list goes on. Recruiting SA players isn't really a Nicks-exclusive thing.

Never in the history of the club have we been able to attract someone like Petracca

I'm not confusing anything.

Back in 2021/2022 - coach irrelevant for player recruiting

2025 attempting to recruit a Victorian superstar - very relevant for player recruiting

We can't go back and point to Dawson and Rankine as reasons why Petracca would choose us. They're completely different
I agree, different reasons for Dawson & Ranking .....wanting to come back home

ANB is going to be central to Petracca's decision .....and although Burgess has decided to move on, IMO he'll still be in Petracca's ear as a confidant

If King was highly regarded ....Petracca would be staying at MELB, and maybe similar to Nicks, in 3 years time his decision might have been different

Petracca in his own mind probably thinks his legacy has been tarnished ....and would be hell-bent on resurrecting his legacy B4 he retires .....maybe 4 years time

They're both from S.A. and both barracked for Adelaide growing up. If Petracca is to be won over, the sales pitch will have to be on its own merits.

How about playing in front of 45k+ crowds every second week - not 20k-25k when they play minnows like GWS, GC, North, St Kilda and Western Bulldogs @ MCG or Marvel?

Even when we play the likes of Collingwood @ MCG we get 65k+.

Nicks hasn’t only help recruit, he has been the key I. Retaining players - we don’t have the home home factor like we use to and Nicks was a key reason why Rachelle, Soligo and Worrell all re-committed to the club

I get some of the criticism towards Nicks, especially team selection - however also need to pay credit when credit is due, instead of making up a narrative to support the “Nicks is Shit” storyline

Worth remembering he's 20 years old not 18 also.
That's probably a good thing though ....a bit more maturity ....better if he were 22

Where does Bobby Hill land ?

Remember the period we had ....every year, supporters freaked out at the potential of our good players leaving .....hardly a whisper now & you'd think we'd be ripe for the picking

Even Butts looks unlikely to move now

The irony.

They're not happy 😆

I like how they're having digs at us for giving up first round picks, last time I checked they've given away multiple first round picks for superstars like Soldo, Rata and Luko

Probably another Hately scenario, where he's seen as a good state league player only.
GWS offered Hately a 3 year extension to stay but he was uncontravted and we finished bottom so had all the power in the negotiations

George Stevens deserves more AFL footy this year and when he did get his opportunity had a real impact - 22 touches, 8 clearances and 14 score involvements

Already an upgrade on Berry

When has Berry ever had 14 score involvements ?

💯 worth the gamble

Call it fate or coincidence said to my wife “ what’s the plan for dinner ?”

“Making these flatbread from that OnTrac guy that keeps popping up in my newsfeed”

She’s way out of touch with footy , port fan hasn’t had a vested interest since pre covid had NFI who he is

It’s a sign !

No that’s not my juicy goss btw

I'm not against getting him if we can get him cheaply. We clearly need to add to our midfield depth (as well as the top end). I'm just saying we should temper our expectations.

Excess to their needs
With an aging list ? .......Danger 36 yo next year ....GEEL don't really have an inside bull to feed Smith and Holmes

Atkins is 30 as well ....he's the closest ....so strange that GEEL would let Stevens go without a fight

Wonder if we tread carefully here, Gibbs and Carey were not the needle movers we thought they would be. Given we have recruited Cotton and have shaped some solid depth of talent on the list we can be flexible with our first round picks over the next two years.

Would we prefer to trade up in this years draft (using next years first) to get a Robey or Sharp that will be here for 10 years with the core group of Curtin, Draper, Rachele, Thilthorpe, Worrell and Michalanney and give us a better chance to compete in the long run or use picks for a tried and tested Petracca knowing best case we may get 3-5 good years out of him.
You might only get three years out of a first round pick. There's no guarantees.
