St Kilda complain about priority draft access in Oct 2024; now set to gain priority access to a first / second round pick via their NGA access

The attempted gotcha from the opening poster is hilarious.

Pretty sure most Saints fans don’t care about this player if it meant getting rid of the stupid academy advantages and equalizing the comp once and for all.
Just more evidence that they know the system is flawed but aren't willing to give up the advantages they gain from it. They'd rather cut down other clubs with false information instead.

There’s too many teams in Victoria. Relocate to Canberra, get yourselves your own Riverina/ACT academy.

Or, stay in Victoria, stay irrelevant, and long may our club continue to flog yours on the field and win more flags.

I suppose if I'd endured failure for the best part of 150 years, irrelevance for the past 15, and going from being well ahead of Hawthorn, Melbourne and the Bulldogs in support to being behind all three of them, I'd also be looking to point the finger at someone else to excuse it.

No, I just don’t have any sympathy for a market with 9 teams in it. It’s competitive, and not Brisbane’s fault the Saints can’t attract enough good players like Collingwood or Geelong can.

You used to, you had some great lists in the last three decades, what’s gone wrong?
I could write you a whole thesis on that.

Nothing is Brisbane's fault, they're allowed to use the unfair systems in place as many other clubs have but that doesn't make said systems any more fair. From my persepctive this thread was based on a completely fabricated premise to deflect blame back at St Kilda.

What an original post.

Get some new material champ.

Pretty funny that there's very few Lions supporters defending the Academy system but instead look to take shots of St Kilda's lack of success.

Two things can exist at once; the current draft system is incredibly compromised and is only getting worse, and much of St Kilda's lack of success is self inflicted. The latter does not invalidate or contradict the former.

ive posted numerous times about look at past drafts and look how many players have come from qld, but your supporters either dont listen or dont care and wish it was the VFL still, literally drafts with 0 or 1 player drafted from Queensland, and the points system has been modified again already

It's because they have no argument and they know it.

The silence is deafening when it comes to actually debating points raised.

your supporters keep conflating father son selections with the academy. if you want to have a discussion about the academy why do you all keep posting about the multiple first round midfielders we have had access to in the last 5 years ignoring they are all father son selections?

there is nothing to debate because the argument is incoherent from the president down to the fans.

Father/sons are cooked as well.

F/S are in the debate because the northern clubs sooked about them and then they were included in the same mechanism as NGA and Northern Academy kids

Nah mate. Your president made sure clubs will pay 'fair' price for priority access and that means picks beyond 55 have no value when it comes to matching bids. So if Fincher is bid on with, say, pick 15 in the draft, then that equates to 1112 points. Apply the 10% NGA discount and St Kilda will need to have enough 2025 picks to cover the required 1000 points in order to match the bid. St Kilda's natural second (23) and third round (41) picks won't be enough to cover the required points and fourth round picks don't hold any value anymore.

Further complicating the problem is the Saints traded away their 2025 second round pick last year so they're approximately 780 points short of matching a bid for Fincher (as it stands) and that's the equivalent of pick 19. That's assuming Fincher is bid on at pick 15 - if he's bid on earlier in the draft then it gets really diffcult for the Saints and they may have to trade away their natural pick 5 or give away several future draft picks.

So get ready for your club to engage in plenty of point accumulating trades this year. You're either going to lose picks, players or maybe even both in order to keep Fincher. Just remember you can thank your president when you're reviewing some of the confusing/one-sided trades that your club will complete later this year.
Your club exists to bolster a tv rights deal and has done nothing despite having every advantage.

Do you think academies are the biggest problem facing equality in the AFL?

Have you read the thread? There are plenty of posts referring to academy picks and then using the Ashcrofts and Fletcher as examples lol

Lets make it fair then. Victorian clubs have priority access to Victorian players and the other states can have priority access to players from their state. We will see which states have too many teams.

No need for that if you can count.

Victoria 10, WA/SA/NSW/QLD 2 each.

It’s pretty obvious who has too many.

Now, who doesn’t have enough? Out of those, it’s just WA, SA can’t support a third club and NSW and QLD can’t either because they don’t have the level of support and demand for it.

Then there’s ACT which can and should have a team.

So 9 Vic, 3 WA, 2 SA/NSW/QLD, 1 ACT and 1 TAS is much more representative of a national comp.

North or Saints should flick off to Canberra and a 3rd Perth team should be the 20th club.

Would set the comp up nicely until at the very least 2050 if not longer.

Victorian clubs already have priority access to Victorian players, this has been going on since well before academies existed.

The difference is it’s informal with draftees telling interstate clubs they don’t want to be drafted away from Melbourne. Happens every year.
