St Kilda complain about priority draft access in Oct 2024; now set to gain priority access to a first / second round pick via their NGA access

Think it’s best you sit this one out if you are unable to have a civil discussion without perceiving aggression and being gaslit.

Thanks for confirming you gaslit me. Maybe you shouldn't be going around pretending to have good faith discussion.

Not triggered, but you're arguing with the wrong person. Luke Hodge is clearly the one you want to argue with, he said what you have a problem with. All I did was point out what he said.

And you've definitely not been polite. You've tried to gaslight me by arguing points I didn't make, you want to argue with me as if I'm Hodge and pretty much all the posts you've made in this thread have an unneeded level of aggression to them, even this one. If you can't see it, that's probably a problem.

What’s more, if you want to talk about gaslighting, I find it pretty funny that you invented a quote from Luke Hodge that his son wouldn’t be playing football if it wasn’t for the academy.

So when Bris goes through a bad period and players don’t want to go there - there’s inequalities in the system that need to be rectified through academies.

But when Brisbane are good and are attracting players and the others are bad and aren’t, they just need to work through their incompetence?
Teams like Stk and North can be terrible for years and not face anything close to the retention challenges that NSW and QLD teams face.

Academy*

Also, Papa Hodge is on record stating that Cooper would not be playing AFL without the Lions academy. Based on that, if he wasn't in the academy, he wouldn't be playing footy.

Please find any quote from Luke Hodge where he’s said this on record. Happy to wait.

I’m “putting words in your mouth”, but clearly you’re happy to make up words for Luke 😂

How many first round picks have North lost that they wanted to keep? JHF? The player they drafted from interstate?

ahhahahahahahahah he literally did it was either agenda setters or sen radio cant remember but he said it'

EDIT found it he said it an agenda setters

“If Cooper was the No.1 choice as the Brisbane academy player, and if Hawthorn wanted to take him as a father-son, what’s your gut feeling?” she asked.

“There’s no way he would have developed as he has in the last 12 months if it wasn’t for the Lions academy,” Luke said.

You do realise that’s not the same thing?

Saying he wouldn’t be playing footy vs wouldn’t have developed is completely different and it’s baffling that it needs to be explained.

That’s a fair point - and actually backs up the argument that interstate players asked to be traded while the club is performing badly.

How many first round lions picks have asked to be traded while you’ve been well run?

It's all well and good when you're near the top of the ladder. The issue with retention of interstate players (generally) is when you drop off.

When Brisbane dropped off for a long period we had a bunch of first rounders leave. When the same happened with North, they've lost JHF who they drafted from interstate. Otherwise they've largely retained their high picks despite languishing.

Puts a lot more pressure on teams from interstate to buck the trend and continually be good (like Sydney has).

But isn’t this precisely why we are having this debate?

Poorly performing Victorian clubs often lose players to free agency as well - and particularly if they’re a smaller club, they often struggle to attract “go home” talent as well.

If Bris’s equalization method during the down years is an academy, what equalization do those clubs receive?

Poorly performed Victoria clubs have the option of drafting first rounders from Victoria without compromising (too much) on the quality they draft. The next best Victorian draftee probably goes within the next few picks anyway.

Look at North and who they've taken over the past 5 years in the first round, or even like the Bulldogs on the early 10's. How many of them were Victorian? Now give Brisbane those same picks when they were poor in ~2010-2018 and how many Queenslanders would Brisbane been able to take without taking players earlier than rated?

North
2020 - Pick 3 - VIC
2021 - Pick 1 - SA
2022 - Pick 3 - VIC
2023 - Pick 2 - TAS
2024 - Pick 2 - VIC

So 1 flight risk (JHF, who funnily enough flew asap) as well as Colby in 2023.. though they could’ve picked any number of similarly rated VIC players.

Brisbane
2010 - Pick 5 - SA (Polec)
2011 - Pick 8 - VIC (Longer)
2012 - Pick 8 - SA (Mayes)
2013 - Pick 7 - SA (Aish)
2014 - Pick 5 - Traded

In 2014, the first QLD’er was taken at 13, so a fair downgrade in quality if we kept our pick and wanted someone homegrown. Would you believe, we traded our 1st round pick to secure a QLD talent (Beams).

2010-2013 all worked out really well for us… 👍

It’s almost as though having a certain % of QLD’ers available in the talent pool would solve the obvious inequity. Now how could we go about achieving that…?

look at all those picks, see any similarities......NONE from Queensland for anyone playing at home what a surprise

Got it - and how many have you lost since being in the finals (and competent) since 2019? Additionally, how does that compare to poorly performing teams like St Kilda?

Do we need to give you history lessons in the mccluggage/ berry picks and the reasons why we got them, since 2019 we have hardly selected any top end talent from Victoria with having trade, academies, father son - not to mention the fact being up the top of the ladder doesnt give you access to the flight risk top end picks

we got Lohmann and he was a huge risk to leave and most people were surprised he stayed, what also helped was his dad got a job up here by chance at the same time he came to the club another stroke of luck

So the solution is to make finals every year?

You're also not addressing the point of the post, which is that poorly performing Victorian teams like North can draft largely from their home state (which appears to greatly assist retention), whereas without academies, poorly performing NSW/Queensland sides can't.

Re St Kilda, which of their recent high draftees has been rumoured to be considering leaving? One of the ones they drafted from interstate (NWM).
