St Kilda complain about priority draft access in Oct 2024; now set to gain priority access to a first / second round pick via their NGA access

Daniher was a FA and Dunkley was escaping an abusive work environment.
Dunkley nominated Brisbane, right? Are there 17 abusive work environments and Brisbane?

Also worth mentioning Charlie Cameron and Lachie Neale both nominated Brisbane before the Lions has started to make finals.

Chris Fagan. Players want to play for him and he offered them a safe haven. Thank gawd we have a coach like grandpa fagan!

You specifically brought up 70 years. Weak, as expected.

The fact is 150 years and you still can’t make your club work.

What about 50 years? 30 years?
Your club is the one who keeps complaining. The Saints add nothing to the competition, other than whining each year, and now about to ge themselves into more trouble.

What about 50 years? What about 30 years? West Coast have won as many flags as the Pies in the same period of time and didn't exist until the 80s.

Yes champ, Eddie never complained about things, he always kept his opinions to himself and never took issue with AFL HQ.

Yes mate, the Saints are about to get themselves into more trouble...

‘champ’…..yep, the word used by losers.

The fact that Eddie raised issues with the league all the time and managed to get some important things changed is an inconvenient truth.

I can’t recall, what did he specifically get changed?

Cost of Living Allowance for one.

Regardless of whether you agree with him or not on any issue, the facts are he spoke out often, he helped achieve change, and Collingwood were successful while he was doing it. Doesn't really fit into the "loser mentality" narrative applied to others.

It’s because of the manner in which he did it. It also helps that Collingwood is a large, successful and commercially relevant club in the context of the national comp. In fact they’re probably the most important club. With that comes a voice and leverage as happens in any business sector. Eddy was and is a massive bad faith actor but he presented his arguments as being beneficial for the comp.

St Kilda’s issue is its only relevance is that it contributes to the TV rights by existing. It is otherwise a commercially irrelevant club with zero leverage. That’s just the truth of it.

Fred Bassett just complains about St Kildas woes. As with anything in life it is also difficult for people to take anything that unsuccessful and poorly run entities say seriously.

Wrong. You elected not to take Dunkley

Incorrect. Dunkley indicated to us he would rather play in Melbourne and he actually was upfront with this to the club- at the time we had a stacked midfield so it was fair enough. What happened was we stated if the bid was from a club outside of Victoria we'd match though. Was bid on by the Dogs and he went there, we'd love him now but realistically he was always going to get to a Melbourne side initially. Things change and he wanted to go to Brisbane and can't sayy he's been wrong added another premiership to his collection

Our relevance has no effect on the merits of our arguments.

And what was the manner in which Eddie did it and how does it differ from our Andrew Bassat is doing it? Both are speaking publicly.

I’m not talking about the merits of arguments. As I said eddy is a bad faith actor and many of his arguments were closed VFL centric and lacked merit past that.

Fred Bassett is doing the same but also has the issue that his club is disadvantaged by the direct geographical market they exist in.

Eddy had a voice and leverage in the power dynamics of the afl for the same reason people will give credence to the opinions of successful business people over that of perennially bankrupt business people. For the avoidance of doubt, Fred Bassett is representing the perennially bankrupt.

I don't understand their argument. Is it trying to point to Eddie whinging and saying therefore our whinging = good?

Well, I guess game recognises game. I have no time for the "hey, small guy, just shut up and take what is given to you" argument. I recognise a bully when I see one.

I fully support and endorse Andrew Bassat calling out fixable inequities that if fixed, will improve the game and not just for the club he is President of. I do not subscribe that we must only do our necessary work quietly. I fully reject the idea that while our President is speaking publicly, we will be unable to do the necessary onfield work to improve.

And I'm absolutely not going to stop talking about the broken draft while is remains broken.

Yes. But for some reason they don’t realise that when Eddy was making his comments back in the day we were all calling him out to?

It’s just that St Kilda has the added stinky club label which adds another layer of:

You’ve proposed no changes to the draft that are equitable.

All you’ve proposed and supported are changes which benefit some clubs like your own and disadvantage others.

The beautiful part of it is you can’t see the forest from the trees.

So the bottom team getting the #1 pick unfettered by other access isn't equitable?

I'm happy to concede the entire league isn't equitable, but the draft itself should be equitable in providing unfettered access to the best talent to the worst teams, because that was the only thing it was ever designed to do.

So you’re just making my point around forests, trees and things of that nature.

The draft has never been equitable. Even if you strip away academy and FS players. Your utopian view of the draft - if only academies and father sons could be removed it’d be fair for everyone!!! - is so flawed and VFL centric.

So you're thesis is nothing can be fair until there is a number of teams, equidistant, playing each other twice each year, with all finals at neutral venues.

I don't agree the draft cannot be fixed. I've detailed a way, in conjunction with a range of other changes, that fairness can be reintroduced to the system. I've made my case, and I'll let it stand.

The Lions often cannot draft best available talent because players do not want to move interstate. The majority of the talent coming through the draft is from interstate, primarily Victoria.

We have to cross these players off our draft board. In the past some of these players have been high draft picks in years we have had corresponding picks in the draft. When Noble came to Brisbane we overhauled and developed a draft criteria which is, by necessity, tailored to this reality. No VFL clubs would ever adopt a strategy like this.

Now, my question to you is - how do you want to address this substantial inequality?

Through academy access and retention allowances.

BTW, there is a chance that St Kilda are about to face the reality of the "go home" factor writ large, so it is not only a non-Victorian club problem. There are plenty of people calling for St Kilda to adopt a draft strategy that focusses on Bayside kids. Geelong specifically target Bellarine/Barwon/South West kids.

Unfortunately Australian Football is most popular in Victoria and therefore most of the players come from Victoria.
