St Kilda complain about priority draft access in Oct 2024; now set to gain priority access to a first / second round pick via their NGA access

I am completely prepared to have a discussion about how the academies are vitally needed in northern states.

About how a centralized fund could be setup to pay promising kids and prevent them from joining other codes, separate to the academies, for all clubs to benefit from if they make the afl.

About how there needs to be a balance for when any of those teams who are down at the bottom of the ladder should be given extra academy incentives to encourage young kids to stay.

About how when those teams are in the top 4, they shouldn’t receive prized top 4 (number tbc) academy kids, let alone father sons funneled into the academies.

But nope, lets just cry bloody murder at the suggestion of anything changing and instead try to deflect to St Kilda in idiotic threads like this.

Fred Bassett defined the conversation by calling for academies to be abolished and proposed no alternative. It doesn’t leave a lot of wriggle room in the conversation of change.

Grow the game. Kids in Gold Coast the most important commodity . Current AFL clubs, players and supporters season fairness must be scarified for greater $$$$$ good.

you do realise when you have a revolving door of players it doesnt matter if you are "compensated", also many of the players listed left after 2 years or doing basically the minimum

also the hickey trade was not just 13 so fake news

Hard to be a good club when they keep leaving, not to mention there would be no qld talent coming back that way in trade if there wasn't academies in the first place developing queensland talent, spare me the victorian bias its not the VFL anymore
Improve your "culture" and it wouldn't be an issue. Funny that when a club starts to be well run, players start to stay lol. No sympathy.

It’s a fairer system but still doesn’t go anywhere near far enough . I said it plenty of times the teams that finish bottom 4 are most in need of talent, there should be no matching bids in the first 4 these should be uncompromised picks, after that go to a system like you mention, Darcy Ashcroft and players of this talent should have been available to the clubs that needed them most
Easy to do. No match 1st round for top 4 teams. That would include F/S and academy. AFL will not do it. I suspect because of F/S resistance from clubs. There was actually limit 1 match for academy for top 4 and 2 matches for 5-8 before rules changed for this year.

To me this entire argument seems simple.

1) No F/S players eligible under the academy or NGA.

2) No match for F/S or Academy for top 8 teams, unless they trade into the top 8 picks (with zero discount).

3) A max of 1 FS/Academy/NGA per draft, per team.

4) The discount system disappear for all “matching”. Instead, it only works if you have a natural pick you’ve traded into within 8 picks of where a player is bid.

rankine left end of 22 when the club was clearly improving and lukocious last year both going back to Adelaide, how many players from Gold Coast are going back to Gold Coast ???

Ohhhhhh, how silly of me. All this time I’ve wondered why you’re getting so worked up and it’s because of Luke Hodge’s kids!

Don’t worry I’m sure they’ll pick Hawthorn. LOL

And we’re back to vested interests and a complete inability to have a reasonable conversation.

It’s like the clown who created this thread trying to “gotcha” Saints fans.

Guess what, the majority don’t care about individual players and F/S picks.

When your number 1 proposed change is based on your own vested interest, I cackle!

I got so caught up on your number 1 proposed change thinking - why would he suggest that?

And then it clicked.

If anything we are doing the Hawkies a favour by using our own resources to develop your FS talent. You should be thanking us!

You realise I literally don’t care what Hodge does or where he goes? It’s not an ordered list for crying out loud. You’re so blind to your own self interests you can’t even have a conversation that doesn’t keep the engendered status quo in place.

Keep looking for excuses, maybe you’ll find the ability to converse while you’re searching.

Lukocius was being pushed out by Hardwick. He prefers the cheaper Academy kids in Walter and Reid with Ben King to Lukocius.

Gold Coast picked the wrong South Aussies in 2018 if they were looking to group friends for retention help. They took the guys who went to the same school, instead of the two close friends.

clearly retention is an issue if you need to group friends or picking certain players over others, even having to use that thought process is a massive disadvantage, it worked out for us taking berry and mccluggagec(thanks gws) but it also could of been a huge disadvantage and limits the drafting pool

How can they go back when they never leave, seriously??? That’s the argument
