I reckon lots of aussies need to go to Europe. I was over there at the time the Euro world cup was on. I believe it was Germany v Madrid - I was in Germany and they lost. They were so happy to have made the final and as they put "2nd in Euro is still great" I used this when we go the GF - at least we made - I was so happy to be there at the game and to have had a chance to play in it.

You know what's fun? Looking back at old articles. Unfortunately the Herald Sun don't keep their old articles up for free, so we can't look back at the day Grant Thomas sat on the front page of the sport section, saying "St Kilda have only won one flag in their history. In the next 5 years, they'll win another two, and this is the man to take them to it." Of course that day Geelong shocked the world by beating the future pretenders, and the battle was well and truly settled in 2007 and 2009.

Geelong coach Mark Thompson revealed yesterday that he used media hype about St Kilda being on the cusp of a premiership in the next three years as a spur for his young Cats' gallant 19-point win over the Saints yesterday.

"I told them this game was an important one. Everybody has been writing about St Kilda, and how good their young blokes were. Maybe they should have been writing about us as well," Thompson said.

Media speculation this week was that St Kilda was close to enjoying premiership success in the next three years with its talented young list that had given the club wins in its previous four games by huge margins before succumbing to Geelong.

Thompson also said that Peter Street, Geelong's tall ruckman, played the best game he could recall since being at Geelong.

The former Tasmanian had 47 hit-outs, nearly double his opponent, St Kilda on-baller Justin Koschitzke. But Thompson did not know what future lay ahead for Street, who has been filling in for club captain Steven King, sidelined because of injury.

I think the way St Kilda handled it was the worst bit though - they set themselves up to fail by talking premierships before they'd even made the finals as a team. The media contributed to it but Thomas was well and truly a part of it. He made it seem as if all they had to do was work hard and the flag would be theirs, not allowing for the growth of other teams, injuries & general luck. As it turned out, only around half that core of 2004/05 would survive, others would be traded in to fill holes and their bottom 5 or 6 would always be their achilles heel, as would their ability to actually perform on the big day, where Dal Santo & Montagna would leave Hayes & Goddard with twice as much work to do in the midfield and it'd be even worse up forward.

the cats in the last 20 years have won 2 from 7 grand finals

They managed to take the lead against Collingwood for what? 5 minutes in the last quarter. After Collingwood had been on top all day and had limited them to just 4 inside 50's compared to the Pies 24 for a quarter. If anyone had someone on toast, it was the Pies. If they had lost that first grand final, it would have been considered a massive choke by them and a stolen premiership for St. Kilda. The second GF proved this.
