Well done SJ, really ruled it out of your game today and concentrated on being a leader. Great to see!

Loved the gamesmanship in front of the goals which got the 50m penalty though.

On the flip side, Franklin's diving today was horrendous, every bit as bad as SJ has been at his worst. Why isnt he talked about in the same breath as SJ and Ballyntine?

Remember reading multiple people on this board saying Stevie never plays two bad games. They were spot on. :thumbsu:

It was certainly mentioned on #AFL360 tonight. I was at the game and I can't recall a contested situation where Buddy didn't dive forward looking for a free.

Lonergan did an amazing job considering the umpires were very happy to oblige Buddy and award some shocking frees to him.

Was definitely a pleasing game from SJ. Not once did he do something to frustrate the crap out of me which is rare as even in his blinders he tests the patience a couple times.

Twas my favourite moment in the game. Let's hope the Hawks defence is that sloppy if we play them in september.

After seeing the video of it, mine too.

I cant believe guerra just stood there still.

I reckon the umpy waited a bit before calling it so as not to be seen letting a player do his bloody job.

SJ is a genius, i hope he coaches us when hes ready.

Mmmm....from memory there were a couple of dodgy unnecessary handballs, one was a bit of a look away that ended up at the feet of West which he couldn't pick up, and another one on his left across his body streaming through half back that caused a turnover, I think in the last quarter. He really is so good when he keeps it simple.

I'm interested to know...if Buddy is warned after the siren that as he comes in for a shot, if he deviates from his line it's "play on", why is that not enacted in general play?

Agreed...he needs to learn that there is a time when it's okay to just go back and take a kick to move it forward. Looks like he's always looking for the "angle". Particularly important that he goes "safety first" in our D50.

A bit harsh ... You can't expect players not to make any errors. I thought he played a great game. I loved the way that he marshalled the troops when called on by Selwood.

Agreed, think i yelled "is this prick going for a role on home and away?" re buddy.

Haha, I said the same thing on fanfooty.

That's a good question. Would love someone to raise it with Gieschen and see what he says.

He had a kick like this after the siren just before half time I'm pretty sure.
The umpire told him that he is allowed to go on his natural arc, which for mine, is an absolute joke.

I'm new at this and even I could tell Franklin was diving like a French soccer player. A guy that big and strong hits the deck because someone disturbs the air around him? Please. I'm a bit disappointed in that guy. Can't see Hawkins embellishing like that.

Another thing I noticed....after the 1st quarter, Franklin largely disappeared. Someone (Lonergan?) was covering him like a blanket and the only time I can really remember him getting a chance, he tried that circus roller shot that just died in the wet turf. Poor decision in a tight game.

Great win by Cats. Had to wait till Monday night here to see it...but worth it!

Lonergan matches up very well with Franklin. Franklin had some success in the first quarter with staging frees, and I think that taught him a bad lesson for the rest of the match, especially when the umps weren't buying into it any more.

I thought Rioli was more damaging.

I think it is the umpire warning him that 'play' has finished except for the fee kick. Any attempt to play on is another play and so can't be allowed and 'time' is immediately invoked.
Because the umpire had first paid the free, then acknowledged 'time' at the siren, the player is entitled to only the allowed piece of play, being the 'free kick'.

Now, if you're suggesting that the umps don't call it during play, well.... maybe that's another issue.

I think the issue is more stepping over his direct line, he steps sideways by a good few metres.

Here look, *puts ball down*
*steps out 3 metres*
*points out angle of kick*
he is that far off the line.

I cant believe guerra just stood there still.

Looked weird to me too but he did something sort of similar in the Pies V Hawks prelim last year. Cloke marked around 60 from goal. Guerra ran miles past the mark and just stood there arms up. The umpire yelled and yelled as if pleading because he did not want to award a 50 and certain goal in a close final but Guerra just continued to stand about 3 metres over the mark completely oblivious. Looked completely ####en ridiculous! Needless to say umpire pays 50. Goal Pies and they win the match by 3 points in the end. Hmmmn.

Yep-Stevie had a good game and is as you say better when he keeps it simple and gets on with it but maybe that stuff goes hand in hand with his genius and flair.
I also think he is great when the tough get going in those crucial times of the match-I know we all acknowledge Bartel, Selwood, Chappy -(and the whole team should be) but Stevie runs all over the field to get involved and push it forward. Shows as much resolve as anyone when the game is on the line.
