Standard of Umpiring?

Has it worsened during the finals?
I am biased but tonights game was shocking, no consistancy and they don't even know the rules (if you feign to handball to either side it's play on after a mark -see S. Johnson).
It wasn't too crash hot last night either (Gehrigs mark).

Now we cant whinge about umpiring can we? Essendon supporters say umpiring is no excuse, well only when they win it is? its a free for all if they lose

It's not play on if you don't go over the mark or take a step, which he didn't.

But one problem is the variation in interpretation.
ie: when a free is paid at one end - result, goal
but the same free is not paid (by a different umpire) at the other end.
Affects results.

If the same umpires worked together every week they would reduce the problem.

It can be play, if they take too long, or go off the line of the mark...

The one blatant mistake the umpires made last night resulted in an essendon goal, so i suggest you STFU.

The umpiring always seems worse when you're a supporter of the losing team. It's part of being a passionate footy supporter.

You can expect half a dozen blatant mistakes in any game, one just hopes that they are not at crucial moments or result in cheap goals.

Last year G.Giescham had an article every Tuesday on afl.com.au explaining contraversial decisions from the previous round. He would explain umpiring decisions and even admit when he thought an umpire had got a decision wrong. It was quite informative at times.

Unfortunately the AFL dumped the column this year.

We just didn't help ourselves out last night by being second to the ball repeatedly.

Umpiring in general has slipped a bit throughout the year, but, I dare say it's not all Gieschen's fault. Sawers as coach, must take some of the heat.

Will say though the umpires did let a lot go in the conditions in both games.

Supporting neither Geelong nor Essendon, I thought that the umpiring was at least up to the standard I have come to expect. They let a lot go in the interests of keeping the game moving although they were strict about making players kick over the mark after time on had been blown. No complaints other than my customary complaint that they should pay all free kicks.

Will say that the afternoon down here was a lot worse...bravery awards for all those who were involved in finals yesterday.

It made no difference to me who won the game and although the umpiring was not without its mistakes I liked the way the umpires decided to bypass the soft free kicks and only pay the real ones. This resulted in the players being in charge of their own destiny and the umpires not having the influence in the result as in some pass matches. Geelong were clearly the better side on the night and Essendon are not wet weather players. BOG Hird. Worst umpiring decision was Lloyds dive....what a pity a player of his talent has resorted to these tactics.
