Not gonna lie, I barred up at the detail in those stats.

I agree with earlier posters that "meaningful" stats are very informative whereas the stats focussed on by the media are mostly meaningless.

Tackling is a good example where the type and quality of tackle is the key factor. Many players rack up big numbers by laying a tackle in a stoppage. Whilst allowing the opposition midfielders to waltz out of stoppages is a licence for failure, they are tackles that all players should be able to make although if it is Thommo it will probably result in a free to the opposition . Compare this Eddie running down a defender streaming our of our F50, now that's a tackle.

I believe three of the most relevant KPIs are

(1) Contested possessions won/lost in genuine 50/50 situation. These could include a 50/50 ball in a stoppage or a contested mark in the F50/D50. How important were Nic-Nats clearances last week even though Sauce won many of the usual stats like HO .

(2) Pressure acts that result in a turnover. Petrenko is/was the king of pressure acts but many had little impact on the contest.

(3) Turnovers from players who were under little or no pressure = Coach Killers. The skill of players these days means that the top teams kick goals from these situations.

One of the guys I go to the footy with has seen hundreds of AFL games but still abuses the defender when his forward is hit on the chest from an unpressured kick from the midfield. I suspect that the media caters to the lowest common denominator and many fans have little interest in why things are happening. Hell, some people still can't see the extra man/men in defence :D.

I think the game suffers from an over reliance on statistics.

That said, does anyone know whether the 'metres gained' statistic is reflective on whether or not the kick was successful. i.e I kick it forward 50 metres and the opposition get the ball and bring it back, is that counted as 50 metres gained?

Imo without being in any inner sanctum of a club's coaching ranks, we can't comment too much on whether they over analyse stats or not.

Personally I doubt that stats get used too often when it comes to tactics and measuring a players value to any given game. It would be used heavily on player development and player management i.e. GPS tracking.

Analysis on tactics and players individual games would probably consist mostly of watching tapes telling player x he should have ran here instead of there, kicked inside instead of down the line etc.

Anybody who has half a footy brain can determine a players value on a game without looking at statistics.

Sure it can, but there's a ton of people, especially nowadays who only look at things like Supercoach/Champion Data and form their opinions based on that. There's still the intangible things stats don't measure.

Tell that to BobaFett...goes on about Pods' disposal stats, as if thats important for the position he plays.

Yup kpis should drive the behaviour you want to see.

Id be asking champion data to capture that stuff for me if were a coach.
Champion data already have almost everything you could imagine. You just need to pay for it.

Currently, Sydney is the AFL’s leader for tackling.

The second-placed Swans average 74.4 a game. The team placed one rung higher on the premiership table, Hawthorn, ranks last at No. 18 for overall tackling (61.4 average). So much for tackling statistics.

For the record, the Power is at No. 5 (71.8 average) and the Crows are 17th of 18 (62.2).

Coaches will argue “differential” statistics — those that record how a team has performed against its direct opponents — are more meaningful than AFL rankings.
