Next weeks semi finals will feature one final between teams that met in finals matches last year - either Geelong vs. West Coast or Geelong vs. Collingwood.

The other semi final will feature either teams that have not met in a finals match for 47 years - Richmond vs. St Kilda, which last played the 1973 first semi final (this also the last time the Saints and Tigers were in the same finals series together until this year); or Richmond vs. Bulldogs, which have never met in a finals game in 95 years.

If the Bulldogs and Tigers do play the semi final next week, it will leave just one finals combination of current Victorian teams that has never taken place, Carlton vs. Bulldogs.

So no first Tigers vs. Bulldogs finals next week sadly.

I was thinking about interstate teams that have never met opponents in finals, and the Adelaide Crows have a most extraordinary record in their 30 years to date, and have met every other team in at least one final with the exceptions of Fitzroy, the Brisbane Bears and the Gold Coast Suns. And this isn't for missed opportunities, as the Crows never played in the same finals series as the Bears, Fitzroy Lions or Suns.

The West Coast Eagles have met most teams in finals, but have avoided meeting Richmond, St. Kilda, Fremantle, Gold Coast and Brisbane - either the Lions or Bears - in any finals series. However, if the AFL had used the current finals series rather than the McIntyre Final 8 system used in the 1990s then there would have been a 5th vs. 8th elimination final between the West Coast Eagles and the Brisbane Bears in 1995 and the same finals match up between the West Coast Eagles and the Brisbane Lions in 1997. West Coast also never played Fitzroy in a finals match.

The Brisbane Lions have met the same teams as the Brisbane Bears did in their finals pre merger (Carlton, Essendon & North Melbourne), but there have been no Brisbane finals against the aforementioned West Coast Eagles, nor against Hawthorn, Melbourne, Fremantle or the Gold Coast.

Port Adelaide which entered in 1997 like its interstate counterparts West Coast and Brisbane has met 12 of its current 17 opponents in finals, with no September meetings between the Power and Carlton, Melbourne, Western Bulldogs, GWS Giants or Gold Coast Suns. The Power and Bulldogs are quite interesting in that both teams have qualified for the finals plenty of times since 1997, but only twice in 1999 and 2020 have they played in the same finals series.

Fremantle have been a disappointment since their entry into the AFL in 1995, and finals appearances for the Dockers few and at times far between. The underachieving Dockers have met only 7 opponents in finals games - Adelaide, Essendon, Geelong, Hawthorn, Melbourne, Port Adelaide and Sydney, equal with GWS Giants which entered in 2012 and have met 7 opponents in a 4 years of finals from 2016-2019 inclusive. The other new team, the Gold Coast Suns has never played a finals match to date.

With the Eagles' exit from the 2020 finals, it means that West Coast and St. Kilda have now appeared in the same finals series 9 times but are yet to meet in a finals match. The seasons are 1991, 1992, 1997, 1998, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2011 and 2020.

This equals the record of Hawthorn and Richmond, who avoided playing each other in 9 finals series before their first finals match-up in the 2018 Qualifying Final.

What about Geary of StKilda

I heard Robert Harvey on the radio Wed night - it was all about Coll ( ass/coacH) - but then they asked him - are you pleased to see the Saints in the finals etc

And im pretty sure he said - Geary the captain - he was playing when Harvey was at StKilda

Geary's the last man standing from the Lyon era - arrived at St.Kilda in 2007. Next longest-serving are Ross and Webster who started there in 2012.

In the first round of the 1993 Foster's Cup Fitzroy and Geelong played at Waverley, the Lions beating the Cats, but when the Lions met the Bulldogs in the second round of the pre-season competition the match was played at Kardinia Park in Geelong!

Kardinia Park was also the venue that year for the Round 1 Fosters Cup match for of all games Essendon vs. Brisbane Bears. Even if Waverley was unavailable, surely the Bombers vs. Bears game could have been played at Princes Park, the Western Oval or even Victoria Park. Among the 20 or so Bears no doubt perplexed as to what they were doing playing Essendon in Geelong were Mark Zanotti and John Hutton, but more likely they had their minds more on being fit for the Brisbane Bears' opening match against North Melbourne in Round 1 of the season proper at the MCG. And looking further ahead Hutton and Zanotti being West Australians were eagerly anticipating a trip home to Perth to meet the West Coast Eagles at Subiaco Oval in Round 5.

However, neither Hutton nor Zanotti were in Brisbane's opening match against the Kangaroos, not due to omission, suspension, illness or injury, but because both regular senior players were inexplicably delisted by the Bears just before the start of the season. Rather than playing North, Zanotti played in Round 1 for his new team Fitzroy against Carlton at Princes Park having been drafted by the Lions, while John Hutton sat out the opening round thanks to the Sydney Swans, the team that drafted him, having a bye. And in Round 5, when Brisbane went to Perth to play the Eagles, Zanotti and Hutton played in opposing teams in Fitzroy's thrashing of Sydney at Princes Park.

Tonight's preliminary final scores, Richmond 6.10 (46) vs Port Adelaide 6.4 (40), represent the first time neither team has amassed a score of 50 in a final since the 1964 preliminary final: Collingwood 7.6 (48) vs Geelong 5.14 (44).

It is now the last 7 years that the team finishing on top of the ladder has failed to win the premiership.

Also the last 3 years (and 4 of the last 6) where the team finishing on top has failed to even make the Grand Final.

How quickly fortunes can change.

In 2017 Richmond and Adelaide played off in the Grand Final, both teams trying to win a premiership after a long drought.

Three years later, Richmond are playing in another Grand.Final (trying to win their third premiership in four years) while Adelaide finished last.

This is not unprecedented however.

In 1936 Collingwood and South Melbourne played off in the Grand Final for the second consecutive year.

Two years later in 1938 Collingwood played in another Grand Final (trying to win their third premiership in four years) losing to Carlton. South Melbourne finished last that year.

In 1948 Melbourne and Essendon played in two Grand Finals, with Melbourne winning the replay after the first was drawn.

Three years later in 1951 Essendon played in another Grand Final (trying to win their third consecutive premiership) losing to Geelong. Melbourne finished last that year.

The others according to my list are

1904 Fitzroy
1915 Collingwood
1953 Geelong
1991 West Coast
2000 Essendon
Think 1923 bombers were the other

Probably going to be the biggest mozz of all time here, but Gary Ablett Jr is playing his 19th season, and if he kicks one more goal, he'll have kicked 10 or more goals in all of them.

But he won't catch the record of Brent Harvey, and doubt anyone ever will, as after his goal-less 1996 season, he kicked 10+ goals every year for his remaining 20 seasons from 1997-2016. He was a freak, and to be frank probably had more left to give, his fitness was unquestioned and his goal-sneak status was uncanny. He always carved Geelong up for sure.

And he kicked his equal most goals in a year in his final season. Thirty-six goals when he was thirty-seven.
Boomer could've easily made it to 450, or even 500.

There has obviously never been a football game played on Halloween (31st October), but if there ever was one by the scores this match between St. Kilda and Carlton in Round 10 2004 would be perfect:

St. Kilda 31.10-196 d. Carlton 13.10-88

Was just chancing upon some scores from the 80's, and noticed the Geelong/North game in July 1987. Rather peculiarly from an alphabetic perspective, Geelong had 12 players in the side with the surnames starting with A, B and C. To add to that, Darcy, Exell, Flanigan and Hocking S were the next four listed.

With Michael Kol making 17 of the 20 names in the old A-K phone book, that just left Dwayne Russell, Stoneham and Darren Troy filling the L-Z edition.

Any other sides be so lop-sided from the old 'phone book' split like this?
