Off the top of my head, Essendon v Melbourne is still the most common grand final pairing.

Carlton v Collingwood and Collingwood v Geelong Grand Finals have both occured six times. I think Essendon v Melbourne Grand Finals have occured seven times. Off the top of my head anyway..

As posted on RogersResults

Collingwood v Geelong also becomes the equal second most common Grand Final Final combination with Carlton v Collingwood, Carlton v Essendon, Carlton v Richmond and Collingwood v Richmond all on 6 Grand Final meetings. Most: 7 - Collingwood v Melbourne, Essendon v Melbourne.

Cameron Ling will become the 112th player to play his final game in a GF win. By club:

18 Melbourne

12 Fitzroy
11 Collingwood, Richmond
9 Essendon, Geelong
7 Sydney
6 Hawthorn, North Melbourne
2 St. Kilda, Western Bulldogs
1 Brisbane, Port Adelaide, West Coast

Retrospective Match/Win Ratio Tables - 2011

Collingwood has clearly won a higher percentage of their matches than any other club since the VFL/AFL began in 1897 and currently they have won the highest percentage since their Premiership year of 2010. But if we start in 2009, Geelong nudges out Collingwood as the team with the highest match win percentage. In the last three seasons, Geelong has won a higher percentage of their matches than any other team, putting them on top of any Match/Win% table. But what if we work backwards, how long does Geelong stay on top?

Full Tables Here: (Not seen elsewhere! ;))

Sample Trivia from the retrospective ladders to 2011

  • Since 1997 St Kilda, Nth Melbourne and Collingwood have all won 184 matches.
  • Since 1982, the last year that Richmond played in a Grand Final, the Tigers have played 666 matches for the lowest M/W% of all teams that have competed since then to 2011 - 39.71%.
  • Since 1979 Richmond and St Kilda have each scored 69,609 points.
  • Since 1959 Geelong have scored 116,067 points - Collingwood have scored 116,065 points.
  • Since 1959 Carlton and Hawthorn have each conceded 107,098 points.

How Long?

  • Essendon has to go back to 1948 for their last 800 wins, St Kilda back to 1913.
  • Carlton and Collingwood have both won over 1,000 matches from 1932, but Carlton have won their last 1,000 from 18 fewer matches.

Melbourne not having even 300 wins since 1970 is an amazing statistic. That's 42 seasons, and having sub-300 wins suggests the Dees have won close to average of just seven games a season since 1970.

By contrast, Geelong's last 300 wins have come since mid-1991.

A typo has made the Demon's worse than they really are! :(

The 300 in that statement should have been 400 (as the table of the last 400 wins shows.) Melbourne has to go back to middle of 1966 to tally up 400 wins. The comparison is with Hawthorn who only have to go back to 1982 for their last 400 wins.

Since 1970 Melbourne have had 379 wins for an average of 9 per season with an average m/w% per season of 39.57%. It still the worst performance of any team that has competed 1970-2011

Ah, thanks for clarifying that. It did seem almost too bad to be true!

Having a look at those tables, it amazed me how quickly Sydney/South's record drops off. They have taken the second least amount of games to record their last 200 wins, behind Geelong; yet for their last 500 wins, they've taken the longest of anyone.

Illustrates how terrible they were for so many years before 1996. Between 1946 and 1995 they made finals just four times (1970, 1977, 1986, 1987) for no wins. Talk about famine to feast! From four finals series in fifty years, they've made thirteen finals series in sixteen seasons since!

1946 to 1981 as Sth Melbourne they won the least percentage of matches of any team - 35.93%

1982 to 2011 as Sydney they have won 47.89% of their matches which currently places them 11th out of 17.

1996 to 2011 they have won 56.22%, second only to Geelong on 61.7%.

Also noticed that of the eight original VFL clubs, St Kilda are the only one who hasn't yet got to 1000 wins. The Saints sit on 865 wins now, still just behind the 869 Fitzroy managed before they folded in 1996.

Hawthorn are just 15 wins behind St Kilda on 850, despite joining the competition 28 years after them.

Century Scores:

  • Of teams that have competed since 1987, only Geelong and Nth Melbourne have scored centuries in more than half of their matches. In the same period, Richmond has scored centuries in under a third of their matches.

  • Since 1997, Melbourne and Richmond have conceded centuries in more than half of their matches.

  • Highest percentage of century scores in a season - 1982 - 64.13% (37.76% in 2011).

  • From 2001-2011 there were 3 (out of 100) finals where both teams scored a century. From 1980-1989 their were 13 (out of 60).

  • In the last 5 seasons (2007-11), Geelong have conceded centuries in 14.4% of their matches (18/125). Essendon have conceded centuries in 61.61% of their matches (69/112).

  • Overall, the team that Geelong has the lowest match/win percentage is Collingwood. However, in the last 10 seasons, Collingwood’s equal lowest m/w% is against Geelong (with Brisbane). In the last 5 seasons of all opponents, Collingwood’s lowest m/w% is against Geelong.

  • In the last 10 years, Geelong’s equal worst match/win percentages are against Brisbane, Collingwood and WB/Footscray.

  • Between 1897-1986, all competing clubs had their worst m/w% against Carlton or Collingwood - including Carlton and Collingwood against each other. In the last 10 seasons, only 4 teams have their worst or equal worst m/w% against Collingwood and none have their worst m/w% versus Carlton.

In the years 1928-30 (when only one Brownlow vote was awarded per game), Coventry kicked the following bags in h&a matches without receiving a vote: 9,9,8,11,8,8,7,7,7,16,7,10,7,9,7,17,7.

I don't feel so bad for Gary Sr when he had a voteless 10-goal game against Adelaide in 1993 now!!

That is astonishing, especially for the 2nd highest goal tally of all time, and those 16 and 17 goal hauls would surely have been miles above any other personal best in VFL history to that time. Lockett and Dunstall are the only players to kick more than 15 in a game since Templeton in 1978.

e.g. Adelaide has played 486 games and has had more cumulative points for than against after 269 of those games; they currently have 45658 points for and 43865 against (aggregate +1793); and the last time they were in deficit was Round 17, 2002.

Interesting points are that Collingwood and Essendon have never been in deficit, and that only 6 of 19 clubs are currently in the black, with Collingwood, Carlton, Essendon and Geelong all showing a massive surplus.

I trust RogersResults will correct any of the above if incorrect. ;)

Certainly your table Ron the Bear above highlights the value in starting well as a club....I'd say the Gold Coast and GWS will be in the negative for a looong time until they start to turn it around with their young squads.

Wonder which club has been the most 'variable' in terms of +/- over the years? Hawthorn had a huge deficiency until the 50's, and it's been whittled down significantly in their powerhouse years, they will most likely erase that figure within say 5 seasons. Richmond has had eras of great performaces (1920's to 1943)....a huge gap from '44 to '66 and then '67-'82 another era of great success. I'd say the Tigers have bounced around +/- more often than most sides...teams like Sydney and Melbourne both falling into deficit with long periods in the wilderness which they have never got back.

Actually, after winning its first VFL game, Richmond was in deficit until 1931. They went almost 80 years before returning to the red last year. I've augmented the table with the number of changes (e.g. Richmond + first game, then - to 1931, + to 2010, - to current = 3 changes).

It's generally the newer clubs in the more even modern era that have shown the most volatility.

Cheers RTB, thanks for that. Eagles with 12 'changes of lead' so to speak in their history? Didn't realise Geelong has had 11.....i recieved a spreadsheet of Geelong's figure over the year and upon greater perusal the bad war years saw Geelong dip up and down a bit in that 50's and early 60's era. Certainly the Cat's number has ballooned significantly in the last couple of decades.

Pies and Bombers being early powerhouses have of course generally been ahead all the time.
