Yeah I reckon 1.1 is the correct quarter time score and the article is incorrect.

If I were to take a guess, I'd say that Metcalf kicked a goal for North in the 1st quarter and was North's first goalscorer.

The source for Norman Waugh being Essendon's first ever goal scorer in the VFL is from the book 'The Clubs: the Complete History of Every Club in the VFL/AFL'.

On page 104, it says: 'Essendon played its first VFL match against Geelong at Corio Oval, and emerged victorious, 7.5 (47) to 3.6 (24). Forward Norman Waugh scored the Dons' first League goal'.

And, answering RedmanWasHere's question, Colin Hounsell kicked the Sydney Swans' first goal since relocation, against Melbourne in Round 1, 1982.

Geelong's first goal-scorer remains a mystery. No online newspaper reports their first goal scorer in round 1 1897. But I have never checked the Geelong Advertiser nor the Australasian.

Collingwood have scored 6.6-42 to 13.13-91 in their 3 last quarters this year. In their last 10 matches they have scored 155 to 285 points in the last quarter. In the previous 10 they scored 339 to 131 points in the last quarter.

Re known first goalscorers, we have:
1991 Adelaide
1987 Brisbane (Bears)
1897 Carlton
1995 Fremantle
1897 Geelong
2011 Gold Coast
2012 Greater Western Sydney
1925 Hawthorn
1925 North Melbourne (I'm assuming Metcalf)
1997 Port Adelaide
1908 Richmond
1897 South Melbourne
1982 Sydney
1908 University (I'm assuming Kneen)
1987 West Coast
1925 Footscray

Which leaves the following to be determined:
1997 Brisbane (Lions)
1897 Collingwood
1897 Fitzroy
1897 Melbourne
1897 St Kilda

*If no one knows, probably needs a trip down to the Geelong Heritage Centre.

State Library of Victoria in Melbourne also holds the Geelong Advertiser.

But I can give you Geelong's first goal scorer.

" 1897 May 8.
The first goal of the match was scored 15 and three quarter minutes into the first quarter by Essendon. Geelong's first goal was scored by Edward James in the third quarter."

Note: They may have been officially Sydney "Swans" by sometime in 1982 but they definitely were not South Melbourne "Swans" in 1897.
The "swans" nickname originates from the 1930's.

I need to query the entry for Carlton's first goalkicker.
I don't believe it is Bill Weir at all.
But rather it was Wally O'C_ock ( BF won't let me type his surname without the _ ), who kicked the goal in the second quarter after Carlton moved the ball from the backline right to the forward line (via the right wing) - where O'C_ock kicked the goal. (source The Argus)
It was Carlton's only goal of the first half.

Yeah my bad. I'd started putting in all the nicknames then I removed them and forgot to remove Swans. I even listed Western Bulldogs but removed them because they weren't a new or different entity.

And I agree with Rhett that these stats should be properly sourced by a newspaper or at least a book by a respected and trusted statistician.

Melbourne were officially the M.C.C. Football Club for most of their time in the League and Geelong were the Geelong Cricket and Football Club until the cricket was dropped some time after 1966. We won't start on the Brisbane 'Bears'/'Lions' thing except to note that League treats them as a continuous entity for records.

One newspaper entry sometimes has to suffice but multiple sources agreeing is always preferable. Stephen Rodgers has recently found evidence that who was thought to be the youngest player in the League turns out not to be. Rhett Bartlett the year before last found evidence that some early quarter scores were not quite as they should be by examining multiple sources.

Essendon's then record score in their round 16 1911 match v St Kilda was for a long time given as 23.20-158 until discrepancies in points for and against in published progressive ladders led to a recent discovery in The Australasian of notice that the score had been incorrectly reported in the Monday newspapers and was in fact 24.19-163.

Perfect, thanks for that.

One of the many stats gods out there.

Two things from Paterson's:

Brisbane only 20 inside 50s, can't recall any that low

And match aggregate of 99, lowest and first under 100 since St Kilda vs Western Bulldogs Round 3(?) 2010

Most goals kicked without playing in a final

475 Keith Forbes .Ess/North/Fitz 1928-1940
Interesting record which I had not checked. Forbes actually kicked nine of his team’s twelve goals against South Melbourne in an amazing game in 1936 where the Swans won kicking 11-30 to 12-16. Forbes and Freyer kicked fifteen of Essendon’s 29-16 (190) against North Melbourne in 1934. Until 1969 that was the third highest score in VFL history and remained the highest by a team not to make the finals until 1978. It remains the equal ninth-highest score by a team that missed the finals, being beaten by:

  1. Brisbane against Sydney in Round 8 of 1993
  2. Footscray against St. Kilda in Round 13 of 1978 (when Templeton and Dunstan kicked 22 between them)
  3. Richmond against St. Kilda in Round 3 of 1985
  4. North Melbourne against Richmond in Round 2 of 1990
  5. North Melbourne against Melbourne in Round 14 of 1990
  6. Sydney against St. Kilda in Round 13 of 1982
  7. South Melbourne against Footscray in Round 18 of 1979
  8. Essendon against Brisbane in Round 9 of 1988
  9. equalled by Richmond against St. Kilda in Round 18 of 1979
With the possible exception of the two Swans teams, it is certain that the key goalkickers in those scores played in a final (Ian Dunstan did so in 1976)

3 kicks, 3 goals, Darren Jarman Adelaide vs St Kilda Round 3, 1999. (Jarman wore No. 3.)

1929 was the only season where the league's leading goalkicker (Gordon Coventry ~ 124) had a total which was greater than the second and third placed goalkickers combined, these being Soapy Vallence and Jack Moriarty, whose 64 and 58 goals equals two less than Coventry's total.

The Leading Goalkicker was only for H&A matches. Your stat does apply at the end of the season though.

Harry Vallence (CARL) 62 2 64
Jack Moriarty (FITZ) 58 n/a 58

I see that Harry missed Carlton's semi-final and Jack didn't play the last 2 rounds either. Coventry played every match.

AFL Tables also credits Donohue with 8 kicks in R4 1978 v Richmond...for 8.1! On his birthday, too.
