Geelong's 'game plan'.
Lull the opposition into a false sense of security?
Get the opposition to expend their ammunition early?
Rd 1 Hawthorn – 3.7 to 8.7 (10.8 to 4.7 thereafter)
Rd 2 Nth Melb - 5.4 to 12.3 (11.12 to 5.3)
Rd 3 Carlton – 5.5 to 8.4 (13.6 to 7.9)
Rd 4 Sydney – 7.2 to 10.3 (12.8 to 6.4)
Rd 6 Richmond – 5.3 to 8.4 (15.8 to 5.5)
Rd 7 Essendon – 3.5 to 6.8 (14.6 to 5.11)
I doubt there has ever been a sequence of matches like it.

It is a very interesting trend.

Clearly Geelong seem to be running out second halves well, third quarters in particular.

Without a lot of 'grunt' players in the current line-up, I do feel that somehow the Cats just try to limit the damage early when they will concede a lot of ball in the contest. But in the second half when the game breaks open (actually it's almost always been in the second part of the second quarter), they come into their own.

Interesting to see Geelong's streak of coming from behind currently sitting at 6 out of 7 games where they had a "mildly worrying" to "sizeable" lead to overcome. It reminds me of Western Bulldogs' 2000 season:

Round 8 vs. St. Kilda: 31 points down at 3/4 time, won by 1
Round 12 vs. Melbourne: 34 points down at 1/2 time, won by 25
Round 15 vs. North: 42 points down 22 mins into 2nd Q, won by 4
Round 21 vs. Essendon: 22 points down 9 mins into 4th Q, won by 11

Geelong's present sequence is more condensed, and they have done it in more games, yet the Bulldogs had a greater average deficit to overcome.

You can toss in a couple of Cats/Dogs games at Skilled as well in the early 2000's....i think twice the Dogs overcame 2nd quarter deficits of around 36 points to pull off a win.

Seeing as you've mentioned it, I will do the right thing for all the statistically curious out there and provide the relevant details:

Round 17, 1999: 20 points down 18 mins into 4th Q, won by 7
Round 12, 2001: 47 points down 15 mins into 2nd Q, won by 7
Round 9, 2002: 40 points down 13 mins into 2nd Q, won by 12

All games played at Kardinia Park

Of the 13 games that the Bulldogs have won at K.P since playing there from 1941 six were in the period 1995 to 2003 ('95, '98, '99, 01', '02, '03). Certainly the Bullies enjoyed playing there in that little era. Similarly, five of the eight victories by the Tigers over Geelong from 1984 until now occurred in that 1996-2000 period. Any wonder Cat fans are not great fans of Ayers as a coach!

For the 1999 match I have the Herald-Sun match report at home, whilst I used the Footystats Diary's seasonal review page for details about the 2000 and 2001 games.
I have complete DVDs of four other Western Bulldogs games.

Observed in Round 7 2013
  • A worst scoring return for Essendon since 1977.
  • Geelong improve a club record as well as a more publicised League record.
  • Essendon are now 1,700 matches away from the competitions non-existent trophy.
  • A first and two new 'bests' for Richmond.
  • West Coast's biggest win in a particular category of scoring.
  • A one in 301 event for Brisbane.
  • A first for Nth. Melbourne since 1983.
  • A worst result for the Bulldogs since joining the competition.
  • Five ducks for the Swans.
  • Hawthorn have only surrendered 19 points in the equivalent of a 'home and away' season.
  • A first for Collingwood since 2005-6.
  • A one in 4,743 scoreline in Subiaco.
  • Adelaide achieve a feat only done 12 times before in 117 seasons.
  • GWS have achieved in 29 matches what has taken their harbour city rivals 317 matches.
  • The Suns have achieved a feat in less matches than did 5 other League clubs.
  • Since 2002 nobody beats the Blues like the Saints do.
  • Five teams have all won 17 - lost 10 - drawn 1 of their quarters.
  • One team hasn't lost a 1st quarter, one team hasn't lost a 3rd quarter and one team hasn't won a 3rd quarter.
  • The team with the most 3rd quarter goals have scored 30 more 3rd quarter goals than the team with the least.
  • 5 teams have won and lost 6 of their last 12 matches.
  • Nine clubs have won a lower percentage of their round 7 matches than Gold Coast and GWS.
  • There are now four teams that have started the season five times with 7 wins from 7 matches.
  • Carlton have had 80 better starts to the season - Collingwood 85.

St Kilda's winning score (77) was the same as their losing score the week before vs Collingwood and, for their second win, just like their first win vs GWS, conceded a score of 68.

Let's work on their combined score which is 145.

Ben McEvoy's considered Roo's replacement and Carlton's previous captain which was Juddy wears No. 5.

Take the 2 from each other and you get 140.

St Kilda were celebrating their 140th anniversary of their first game vs Carlton last night.

Sorry if I'm missing something obvious, but what does this one mean? Can't find reference to it on your site. Is it rushed behinds?
Sorry if that was too obscure.
  • Hawthorn's 19th win from their last 22 matches. Losses - Geelong (2), Sydney/SM (1). Average losing margin 6 points.

Hawthorn have lost those 3 matches by a total of 19 points. (Geelong in 2011 lost 3 matches by a total of 25 points.)

Geelong just don't bottom out.

Hawthorn's very surprising with how low they are.

Brisbane won last years round 1 game vs Melbourne.

Hawthorn's very surprising with how low they are.

Hawks had a run of poor to mediocre seasons up to 2006 - remember they were nearly the 'Melbourne Hawks'.

Brisbane won last years round 1 game vs Melbourne.

Well caught sir - where they went down the ladder in round 2 had sneaked into their round 1 record.

Incidentally, though I'm sure it's been done before, the record here is 23, Bill Hutchison (22-0-1) vs St Kilda.
On the dreary side, Ted Pool never mounted the podium in 19 clashes v Carlton, two others have 0-19s, then it's the Poolmeister again with 0 and 17 vs Coll.

Hawthorn fielded the oldest team of the round in Rounds 6 & 8, for the first time since R21 1997.

Last time others were the oldest:
Adelaide - R18 2008
Brisbane - R22 2004
Carlton - R17 2002
Collingwood - R22 2006
Essendon - R5 1992
Fremantle - R1 2008
Geelong - R21 2012
Melbourne - R11 1997
North Melbourne - R5 2006
Port Adelaide - R22 2005
Richmond - R12 1986
St.Kilda - R20 2012
Sydney - R7 2013
Western Bulldogs - R21 2010
Fitzroy - R19 1981

West Coast, University, Gold Coast & GWS have never fielded the oldest team of the round.
