Observed in Round 8 2013

West Coast become joint winners of the most matches in the last 3 seasons by less than a goal.
Nth. Melbourne extend their lead in most number of matches lost by less than a goal in the last 3 seasons.
The equal 2nd lowest margin ever for a match where the winning team trailed at the first 3 breaks but won the last 3 quarters.
A ’most’ for Brisbane v Essendon.
GWS do in 30 matches what Geelong has taken 713 matches to do.
A new low in Launceston.
Gold Coast get there sooner than did Carlton, Hawthorn and St Kilda.
A new worst for the Bulldogs.
A first for Collingwood since 1985.
A first for Geelong since 2001.
A Fremantle streak ends at 185 matches ahead of Collingwood.
The Swans predominate is a particular kind of draw scoring.
A first in drawn matches since 1914.
Port’s continuing trouble winning matches in Victoria.
A first for Richmond v Melbourne since 1986.
An attendance ‘milestone’ in Adelaide.
The lowest first quarter win percentage is shared by 2 top 8 teams and a bottom 3 team.
Adelaide, Brisbane, Carlton, Essendon, Gold Coast and West Coast have all won the same number of matches from their last 12.

Hawthorn have now posted 3.3 (21) in its last 4 consecutive 3rd qtrs. Not sure how unique an event this is?

It is a new world record. No other team in the hisory of the League has scored the same tally of goals and behinds in 4 consecutive 3rd quarters before. Well spotted!

Melbourne scored 2.2 in 4 consecutive first quarters rounds 9-12 1905.
Richmond scored 3.4 in 4 consecutive first quarters rounds 1-4 1976.
Sydney/SM scored 4.6 in 4 consecutive second quarters round 18-semi-final 1932 - rounds 1-2 1933.
Essendon scored 1.1 in 4 consecutive last quarters rounds 1-4 1897.

No its a world record. The rest of the world has had plently of time to take part in the premier football competition in the world but has chosen not to, consequently the world records are currently confined to the AFL. :)
That's like saying that the fastest 100m run at the Olympic Games becomes a world record.

'The rest of the world has had plently of time to take part in the premier athletics meet in the world but has chosen not to, consequently the world records are currently confined to the Olympics.'

I think you working your way towards getting the 'world record' joke. :thumbsu:
(Jokes are no good if you have to explain them too much!:( )

Meanwhile, thanks to Stemline's observation, Hawthorn's feat has been added to this list of scoring co-incidences.

Geelong's 'game plan'.
Lull the opposition into a false sense of security?
Get the opposition to expend their ammunition early?
Rd 1 Hawthorn – 3.7 to 8.7 (10.8 to 4.7 thereafter)
Rd 2 Nth Melb - 5.4 to 12.3 (11.12 to 5.3)
Rd 3 Carlton – 5.5 to 8.4 (13.6 to 7.9)
Rd 4 Sydney – 7.2 to 10.3 (12.8 to 6.4)
Rd 6 Richmond – 5.3 to 8.4 (15.8 to 5.5)
Rd 7 Essendon – 3.5 to 6.8 (14.6 to 5.11)
I doubt there has ever been a sequence of matches like it.

From 37% to 77% game time, on average Geelong outscores its opponents by 39 points (Rounds 1-8 excluding Round 5).

The graph is an impressive piece of work - the Cats football dept. might do with it.
Very different patterns than that of the Essendon v Brisbane match were a quick count indicates that the lead changed 17 times during the match and after the 5 min mark of the 3rd quarter, every Brisbane goal was answered by an Essendon goal until the match was sealed by Brent Staker's last goal for Brisbane at 28m 38s into the last quarter.

Speaking of Essendon, in 6 consecutive matches in rounds 9-14, 1997 they scored 5.3, 5.3, 5.3, 5.1, 5.1, 5.1 in the last quarters.

According to Wiki, Braddles holds the "world record" for most senior games, Equatorial Guinea and Latvia don't get a look in.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Craig_Bradley#Games_Records

What percentage of possible games did Bradley play in at Carlton between his debut and last VFL/AFL game? And how does that compare with the other say top 20 all time VFL/AFL games record holders?

Also wondering how that compares to say the say the top 20 players currently still playing. Not sure if I heard correctly but I think I heard that Dustin Fletcher had missed over 100 possible games since his debut. Imagine how many games he could have been on with the durability of Bradley!

Pretty sure these numbers are correct for the 300-gamers:

Pretty sure I've done something similar in the past, but anyway.

I was on RogersResults page the other day and noticed a list of ladders for first x amount of games in the VFL/AFL and noticed University had one of the most successful entries into the VFL/AFL winning nearly half of their first 50 games which i think only our boys have done. Not many would've realised that.

I was glad to see Western Bulldogs scrape home against St Kilda yesterday. I was a bit worried when I read Nicky Winmar had given a motivational address to the players earlier in the week, with the 20th anniversary of Winmar's "pointing to his skin" game having recently been celebrated. St Kilda have had a good recent mini-history of beating Footscray/Bulldogs in milestone games.
  • Round 15, 1982 they beat us in Barry Breen's 300th game (It was celebrated as Breen's 300th at the time, but has since been recorded as his 299th).
  • Round 22, 1995 they beat us in Danny Frawley's final game.
  • Round 5, 1996 they beat us in their next game following the death of Trevor Barker.
And then there were those preliminary finals of 2009 and 2010.

As a sort of leveller perhaps, I have seen some good comebacks against St Kilda
  • Round 21, 1983 we came back from 45 points down in time-on in the third quarter.
  • Round 9, 2000 we came back from 31 points down at 3/4 time
  • Round 3, 2008 we came back from 37 points down at 1/4 time.

They are still top of the ladder of results after the first 53 games in the competition - even though to play for them you had to be a graduate of, currently studying at or be qualified for entry to a course at University. This was at a time when the only state school in Victoria offering a path to University was the 'University' High School opened in 1910.

The dropping off with University's competitiveness co-incites with the League becoming professional from 1911.

Observed in Round 9 2013:

  • Things that haven’t happened to Collingwood in 8, 10, 13, 14, 26, 31, 95 and 98 years.
  • The Swans fail to break a 54 year ‘drought’.
  • Geelong do something that has only been done 7 times before in the history of the competition.
  • Giant’s supporters see in 31 matches what Magpie supporters have only seen in 2,405 matches.
  • A first for the Bulldogs in 30 years.
  • Two equal ‘fewests’ and ‘mosts’ for Carlton since 1985 and 1986.
  • An uncelebrated 250th for Richmond.
  • A most for Hawthorn since 1964-5.
  • An unwanted 100th for Nth. Melbourne.
  • A 3 out of 22 for Adelaide.
  • 5 new records over in the West.
  • Melbourne last lower in 1960.
  • Carlton the 2nd most successful in the last 6 rounds.
  • Gold Coast have only won one less match than Adelaide, Brisbane, Carlton, Collingwood and West Coast from their last 12 matches.
  • Melbourne have had only 4 worse starts to a season – Fremantle have had only one better.
  • West Coast are scoring their highest since 2003 – Geelong are conceding their most since 2003.
  • The percentage of matches won leading at each break is the lowest since 1987.

looking at those stats it would be fair to say a bit of a myth that kicking for goal is the one skill area that hasn't improved?

As R.R has suggested, i guess the fact that several games now are played at the windless Dome, most other Victorian home games are played at the rather homogeneous MCG, and the sight of mud is now rather rare, the kicking has improved for those reasons. New balls to start every quarter as well might have a role, as the era up until the 80's saw the same waterlogged footy used all game. Indeed now, many balls are able to be used, with a bag of footballs at each end of the ground for the kicker to use. That's all got to help better skills.

Now that Paul Puopolo and Luke Bruest have reached 50 games, they join the list of among the winningest players having played that many games, with 41 victories each.

Rather astonishingly, Bruest has suffered five of those nine defeats to Geelong, Puopolo four of his nine. Only Sydney, Collingwood and Richmond in addition to Geelong has been able to inflict a defeat on a Hawk side with one of these players in it.

Kudos to *Paul* for the statsrleague site too :)

Percentage of matches by venue where both teams scored more goals than behinds 2000-2013 round 9

Docklands Stadium: 44.82%
Subiaco Oval: 35.78%
Sydney Cricket Ground: 35.51%
Kardinia Park: 35.35%
Football Park: 34.0%
Melbourne Cricket Ground: 33.03%
The Gabba: 30.3%

Closed stadium certainly seems a factor.
Slightly lower figure for the MCG could be due to more teams playing there who are less familiar with the conditions.
Figure at the Gabba may be due to more rain during matches as with the climate changing, southern Australia dries up.

Fully professional players having more time to practice skills may also be a significant factor - 50 years ago formal training consisted of a few hours after work, Tuesday and Thursday evenings.

General impressions on things getter worse or better are usually based on short term data and memory.

Matches with aggregate scores of 60 or more points each quarter.

There have been 99 such matches.

The first one was:
60_1937_zpsf721cc15.png

There were another 4 1938-1948.

There were none 1949-1968

There was at least one every season 1976-1997

There have been 8 so far this century (2001-2013 round 9)
But there have been none since:
60_2009_zps8296eddb.png

There were 10 in 1987.

One of the 99 was a draw.
