Last year I observed the two teams in the grand final had played every week of the finals series.
I suspected that had never happened before. Can't imagine any other finals series it being possible.

This year it looks like the grand final day will also have a first.
Looking like it will be a grand final where all the players in it have never played in a league grand final before.

Technically the very first grand final would be the other but even then those guys in season before of 1896 probably had players that had tasted premiership success in final game of a VFA year?

I love how everyone is repeating this ADEvRICH stat as if they were the first one to realise it. Anyway, no VFL Grand Final was required in 1897 because Essendon went undefeated in the post H&A round-robin series. In 1898, a grand final was required, with the minor premiers Essendon playing off against the round-robin series winner Fitzroy. Fitzroy became the first VFL Grand Final winner.

Fitzroy VFA were premiers in 1895 and 2nd in 1892 but no finals or grand finals were played, there was just a H&A series.

I think this trend is the only thing that will keep Castagna in the side

I think this trend is the only thing that will keep Castagna in the side

I'm a critic and he's probably the 22nd bloke picked, but thought his first half was very good and his energy causes the opposition to panic. Call it an Earl Spalding intangible factor.

Carlton lowest score as premiers in 1979 season was the grand final score itself.

This has actually occurred four times:

1921: Richmond 5.6 (36)
1927: Collingwood 2.13 (25)
1979: Carlton 11.16 (82)
2002: Brisbane 10.15 (75)

Brisbane Lions also scored 10.15 (75) in round 5 of 2002

Another omen for the Tigers?

Richmond's last premiership in 1980 came a year after it missed the finals in 1979, finishing 8th.

The next team to perform this feat was Essendon in 1993, when it rose from 8th the previous year.

Since the Final 8 was introduced, it has happened twice - and appears to be a once-in-a-decade event:

Adelaide rose from 12th in 1996 to premiers in 1997

Geelong rose from 10th in 2006 to premiers in 2007

Richmond is aiming to rise from 13th in 2016 to premiers in 2017

Dustin Martin's vote tally of 36 is the highest for a Brownlow Medal count in VFL/AFL history.

His total of 36 votes also equals his first number at Richmond.

The 2nd player from the 2009 AFL Draft to win it (Nathan Fyfe the first.)

The first medalist to be profiled on TAC Cup Future Stars.

Excluding the dual-voting years of 1976-77, Dustin Martin's 11 BOG's is a record. Previous best 9 by Colin Watson (1925), Ivor Warne-Smith (1926), Greg Williams (1994), Fyfe (2015) and Dangerfield (2016).

Martin is the first winner not to poll a '2' since Ian Stewart in 1971.

Why is Brownlow medal voting becoming so concentrated?

Are a small group of players really becoming more dominant? Is tagging is dead?

Me and a mate were chatting about this the other day - one extra random theory we had was that the cult of celebrity has exploded over the last decade or so and maybe that weighs on the umpires minds when ever they have a 50/50 decision these days.

Perhaps 30 years ago it was more of a 'gee 23 from Hawthorn played well today' sort of affair.

Maybe more teams/salary cup = less stars in each team?

Not sure - up until 1994, only 2 players ever scored 30 or more votes - both in 1940.

Greg Williams scored 30 in 1994, Harvey got 32 in 1998, then Judd (30) in 2004.

Since 2009, 6 winners have scored 30+ and 2 others have scored 30+ without winning (Dangerfield, Mitchell).

What seems to be happening is that, while players are not polling in many more games, the top players are getting more 3-votes. I think that ties in with the 'celebrity' factor'. Williams was the first player to get 9 3-vote games (and Hutchison in '53 was the only player to have gotten even 8 before - Teasdale got 17 with the double votes, so I guess he did too). No one else had 9 until 2015.
In the last 3 years, Fyfe got 9 3-vote games, Dangerfield 9 and Martin 11. Fyfe only played 18 games.

Let's not forget that only a couple of decades ago, basically it was impossible to watch much more than a game or two a week. That's for fans, umpires, the media. I reckon the hype over the 'stars' didn't have as much opportunity to thrive, because you didn't know who was performing at an elite level day in, day out.

Perhaps because coaches are so risk-averse and players are disciplined to play the percentages, those who make things happen stand out more than ever before?

Richmond maintain their perfect record since the inception of the Norm Smith Medal: three grand finals, three Norm Smith recipients. Adelaide also had a 2 out of 2 record prior to the match.

What's amazing about the Adelaide vs Richmond Grand Final is that it'll be their first finals game against each other.

27 years doesn't make that so surprising....Particularly considering Richmond's almost continued absence over that period.

An even more amazing stat is that Hawthorn & Richmond have never met each other in a final ever, in 93 years of footy....In spite of both being in the same finals series on 9 separate occasions.

Damien Hardwick's win/loss record

Hit 50% after the last h&a round of 2015 before crashing to North in the elimination final.

Hit 50% again after defeating Carlton in the opening round of 2016, only to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory against Collingwood the following week.

Hit 50% again after a convincing win over Hawthorn late this year, but dipped back under 50% after losing to Geelong the next week.

Hit 50% with the 103-point drubbing of Freo at Subiaco and seems to have cracked the code, winning the next four straight to rise to 51.1%.

His record is now comparable to Paul Roos (51.5%), with one premiership apiece.
