Western Bulldogs are the first premier to miss the finals for the next two seasons since the Adelaide premiers of 1998 missed making the finals for 1999 and 2000.
The last premier team to miss the finals for three successive years were the Hawthorn team of 1978 who missed finals for 1979, 1980 and 1981.

I thought I'd do the next one.

The last premier team to miss the finals for four successive years was the infamous Norm Smith led Melbourne of 1964.

Not only did they miss finals the next four seasons, they did not make finals until 1987, an astounding 23 years later!!!

Brisbane (2001-02) are the only non-Victorian club to win a premiership from 2nd.

Yep, remember 1987 well. Them in finals that year was something to behold. The emotional rollercoaster ride of ups and downs their fans were on that year I not ever seen before or since.

I loved State of Origin back in the 80s but since we introduced clubs from WA and SA there seems no point now. Clubs don't want it, coaches don't want it, elite players don't want it. Furthermore, I hated having a weekend with just one game, especially if that game was not in Victoria. For that reason, the ridiculous 7-1 (2004), 6-2 (2005-06, 2008) and 5-3 (2007, 2009-10) round splits were shelved.

Unlike NRL State of Origin, the best form of Australian Rules football is the regular game between clubs, rather than match-ups between composite sides.

This current bye weekend sucks and football fans are missing their dose of sport. There have been suggestions of a play-off weekend and I am confident this will happen before too long. Just like Good Friday football was inevitable.

So I thought I'd look at possible playoff matchups, beginning with the 18-team competition in 2012.

What I like about play-offs:
- only teams 1 to 6 get the week off
- harder for 7 and 8 to win their Elimination Final (or 9 or 10), not to mention the premiership
- while 7 and 8 do not get a home final, they would get a home playoff
- teams 9-12 still have something worth fighting for late in the season
- the AFL will like the opportunity for a possible extra 1-2 games at Docklands

PLAYOFF WEEKEND
2012:
7-FR (14-8) v 10-CA (11-11) @ Subiaco ; 8-NM (14-8) v 9-SK (12-10) @ Docklands
2013: 7-PA (12-10) v 10-AD @ Football Park ; 8-CA (11-11) v 9-NM (10-12) @ Docklands
2014: 7-ES (12-1-9) v 10-AD (11-11) @ Docklands ; 8-RI (12-10) v 9-WC (11-11) @ Docklands
2015: 7-AD (13-8) v 10-GE (11-1-9) @ Football Park ; 8-NM (13-9) v 9-PA (12-10) @ Docklands
2016: 7-WB (15-7) v 10-PA (10-12) @ Docklands ; 8-NM (12-10) v 9-SK (12-10) @ Docklands
2017: 7-ES (12-10) v 10-WB (11-11) @ Docklands ; 8-WC (12-10) v 9-ME (12-10) @ Subiaco
2018: 7-GW (13-1-8) v 10-PA (12-10) @ Showgrounds ; 8-GE (13-9) v 9-NM (12-10) @ Docklands

Observations:
9 playoff games at Docklands in 7 seasons
2013 - all Adelaide playoff, Brisbane just miss playoffs by percentage (albeit 18.5%)
2015 - Adelaide v Geelong playoff in the year that their H&A match was historically cancelled
2017 - St Kilda miss playoffs by 0.14%

Definitely.

But only when there are 20 teams.....

Options?
WA3?
Tasmania?
Castle Coast (Newcastle/Central Coast)?
ACT?
Southern Sydney?
NZ?

Probably in that order...

You would want to add 2 teams at a time, prob WA3/Tas then SA3/NT. Ideally we would get to 24 then have 12 teams in Division 1 and 12 teams in Division 2 with relegation and promotion and a full 22-week home&away draw.

I think we need an option for the indigenous community to stay close to family (and warmer weather). I'd have NT play 8 or 9 games in Darwin and 2-3 in Alice.

When Shaun Burgoyne lines up against Richmond tomorrow in his 200th game for Hawthorn, he will become the first VFL/AFL player to play 150 games for one club and 200 for another.
Goddard might have got there with another year at Essendon.

Richmond v Hawthorn, highest attendance: 70,701 (R3, 2018)

Then 66,305 (R18, 2015) and 64,324 (R19, 2013).

Melbourne v Geelong, highest attendance: 81,550 (R8, 1963)

Then 75,033 (R21, 2000) and 69,082 (SF, 1989).

Only 7 players have played in 13 finals series, only 12 have played 28 finals. This weekend:
Jarrad McVeigh will play in his 13th finals series in 15 seasons, and at least his 28th final
Shaun Burgoyne will play in his 13th finals series in 17 seasons, and at least his 35th final
Joel Selwood will play in his 11th finals series in 12 seasons, and at least his 27th final

And how far can Lance Franklin rise in the Most Finals Goals stat:
111 - Gordon Coventry (31 finals, 3.58 goals per final)
78 - Jason Dunstall (21 finals, 3.71 goals per final
74 - Jack Titus (24 finals, 3.08 goals per final)
72 - Leigh Matthews (29 finals, 2.48 goals per final)
69 - Lance Franklin (23 finals, 3.00 goals per final)
65 - Stephen Kernahan (18 finals, 3.61 goals per final)

Most Finals Wins:
26 - Michael Tuck (26-0-13)
21 - Martin Pike (21-0-6)
20 - Kevin Bartlett (20-1-6), Shaun Burgoyne (20-0-13)
19 - Leigh Matthews (19-0-10), Chris Mew (19-0-9)
18 - Dermott Brereton (18-0-8), Gary Ayres (18-0-10), Jason Akermanis (18-0-10)
17 - Sam Mitchell (17-0-9)

24 in a row at Punt Rd (1932-35)
22* in a row in Victoria (record: 23 by Geelong 1952-53)

The record winning streak at any ground is 29 by Geelong at Kardinia Park (2008-11)
