Re: Post your stats questions here

Does anyone have any tallied stats for players kicking the first goal of the game, or know where i can find this information?

Re: Post your stats questions here

Wondering if someone can provide the following stat - I can't seem to find it anywhere...

- Number of Collingwood rotations in each game in 09 (incl finals).

Just want to see if there is a drop off after Brad Scott left!?

Ta muchly....

Re: Post your stats questions here

Any chance one of the stats gurus can help solve a problem posed in this thread ?

http://www.bigfooty.com/forum/showthread.php?t=638506&page=2

Is there a greater link between premiership/finals success and attacking ability (say total points scored during the home and away games) or defensive ability (points conceded during H&A), or are they both about 50/50?

My gut tells me that defensive teams are more likely to have premiership success than attacking teams, but don't have the data to back up this hunch.

Any help appreciated.

Will try to find time over the next couple of days to look at this. Pretty sure your instinct is correct and that premiership success has historically been built on defence.

Re: Post your stats questions here

just curious....I had a bet on the gf - Draw at end of any Q ($6.5) - and nearly ended up killing milburn. I was thinking, they are pretty good odds, and you may be able to make some profit by using that bet for every (most) match during the season.

So my question.......

How many game throughout the year were the scores level at the end of any quarter?

cheers boys

Re: Post your stats questions here

Who would be the career best Dreamteam player?

Overall points for Career?
Highest average over Career?

Bradley or Tuck for overall points?
Harvey would be up there too.

Best percent during H&A has won 53 of 113.
Most goals kicked during H&A has won 43
Least goals conc during H&A has won 36.

Some overlap, e.g. Geelong 2007 had all three.

I would've thought the elite Full Forwards would have the most points and average, so I thought I'd have a look.

Just checked the stats of five players over at Paul's awesome site. While some stats are missing or aren't allowed to be displayed, from what's there, I got the following;

Robert Harvey

Points: 32454
Games: 383
AVG: 84.7

Greg Williams

Points: 21509
Games: 250
AVG: 86.3

Jason Dunstall

Points: 22838
Games: 269
AVG: 84.8

Tony Lockett

Points: 21443
Games: 281
AVG: 76.3

Gary Ablett Snr

Points: 21448
Games: 248
AVG: 86.6

Interesting.

Just seen Paul's post, and some of the data doesn't match up, but that's OK - I trust Paul more than my maths!

Re: Post your stats questions here

Has any player polled over 200 Brownlow votes and not won a Premiership?

Re: Post your stats questions here

http://stats.rleague.com/afl/brownlow/totals0.html

Gary Dempsey - 246 votes
Robert Harvey - 215 votes

(Only Harvey, Dempsey and Leigh Matthews* have ever polled over 200 votes)

If you make it 150 votes then you can add these guys to the list;

Bob Skilton - 180 votes
Kevin Murray - 178
Nathan Buckley - 178
Scott West - 175*
Garry Wilson - 161*
Len Thompson - 154
Robert Flower - 150 votes*

*Never won the Brownlow Medal.

Since I'm not a statistician or actuary, this rough method will have to suffice unless someone wants to do a better job.

For each year, I gave the premiers an offensive and defensive score out of 100, according to the following formula:

((T - R) / (T - 1)) * 100

where T = number of teams in comp and R = rank according to total points for/against

e.g. if there were 10 teams in the comp (as there were between 1908-14) and the premier ranked 2nd for points for and 3rd (lowest) for points against

offensive score = ((10 - 2) / (10 - 1)) * 100 = 88.89
defensive score = ((10 - 3) / (10 - 1)) * 100 = 77.78

Over the 113 VFL/AFL seasons, the results are:

. . . . . Mean StDev
--------------------
Offence .83.70 19.86
Defence .84.48 17.26

Defence appears to be a marginally better indicator, and also shows less variability. I expected a bigger difference, although over the past 30 years the gap is greater:

. . . . . Mean StDev
--------------------
Offence .83.74 21.70
Defence .86.84 14.68

Yes, this is a rough and ready measure and yes, some of you are probably jumping up and down yelling that it's not statistically valid to do this type of calculation on ranks, but since I've forgotten how to do proper stats, that's all you're gonna get. :)

Haha, well don't :p Usually I just knock something up quickly, in this case I forgot to include the tackles. I've fixed up my original post, our numbers are still different though.

I wonder is it worth putting a DT section on my site, I guess it's fairly thoroughly covered elsewhere.

It would be a great addition. Only bugger is the missing info from some years...

No sorry I should have been more specific...I'm after disposals and goals for each player per qtr And as comprehesive as possible

Re: Post your stats questions here

What is the longest amount of time a player has been on an AFL list without ever playing a senior game?
