Re: Post your stats questions here

What is the highest number of consecutive goals kicked by a team that drew or lost?

Whether you mean 'unanswered goals' or goals without a behind it is not possible to ascertain from existing VFL/AFL records.

Most of the existing scoring records are just end of quarter tallies.

Paul or Ron may be able to supply some examples from more recent times when the order of scoring within a quarter has been recorded.

I was thinking of unanswered goals. From what has been provided, it looks like the answer could perhaps even be 9 or 10 goals.

The answers provided are the greatest for within a quarter.

Where the unanswered goals stretched across quarters it would be virtually impossible to definitely find the highest in VFL/AFL history. Published match reports may provide clues but you could be never sure of finding the highest.

Understood, you could go back to some of the news reports at the time and read the reports. Just checked Saints v Hawks from 1999 in which we were up 11 goals to 1. Turns out we split 6 (Saints) - 1 (Hawks) - 5 (Saints). Pretty much bang on the middle.

Didn't Watson get 2 and 28 last year?

And one more for you guys - what's the biggest difference between average winning and losing margins for a season. Melbourne currently sits at 115, I'd imagine that would be right up there.

Melbourne's is 112.97 (63.8 W, 49.17 L) which would be the highest for a completed season. The record is Geelong's 2008 (107.91, 51.91 W, 56 L).

Highest to Round 13 is Geelong, 2008 again (131.25, 45.25 W, 86 L). There are three others higher than Melbourne at the same stage (North Melbourne 1983, and Hawthorn 1991 & 1994).

Re: Post your stats questions here

Most free kicks paid in a game and most free kicks by a single umpire in a game? There was 54 free kicks on saturday night in the bris v rich game

That'll be nowhere near the record.

People complain about free kicks in today's games, but the numbers are nothing compared to the amount there used to be.

Correct :thumbsu:

And they were soft as shit back then too. It's nothing new.

It's funny, I was watching the 1986 SOO game the other night (WA v Vic) and two things struck me

1) The amount of free kicks given for seemingly NOTHING and.
2) The amount of free kicks NOT given for stuff that's almost reportable today.

I try and stay out of umpiring conversations. They do the best they can, and they make mistakes (just like the footballers they're umpiring).

But if anyone tries to tell me that the game's over-officiated, there's at least the stats to say that it's not.

Re: Post your stats questions here

Paul, have you considering placing a search bar at the index of your site? Often I'm trying to find a player quickly but have to conduct a search manually.

For anyone who's interested how I do it manually, click this link here, in the search bar place whatever player's name you wish to search for in front of where it says "site" and make sure there's a space inbetween the two. Then hit enter :thumbsu:

Re: Post your stats questions here

I have that (of sorts) off the very top level page, but it is probably better to have a direct link at strategic places.

I notice from your link google is indexing about 21,000 pages (there's just over 27,000), which is not bad. The last time I looked, it was only about 8,000.

Seems that search thingy doesn't work any more, got a rude accusatory message from Google when attempting to do so.

OK, try the search box on here. Ugly for now, which should be fixable once I figure out the customisation options, but seems to work.

Hmm. scratch that, doesn't seem to be un-uglifiable.

Re: Post your stats questions here

This isn't exactly a question I know but there's a fascinating bit of trivia that shows Carlton currently on 30,000 (all-time) Behinds and Collingwood on 29,000 Goals. Fairly rare sort of occurrence I’d imagine! I haven't noticed this mentioned anywhere which is somewhat surprising.
