4 wins, 1 draw, 1 loss - Best start to the season in 15 years - since 1996 (5-0-1)

Have the most stingy defence of any Carlton side since the 1995 premiership squad (467 points scored against in 2011/381 in 1995). Only sub 500 pt defence since 1996.

With that walloping that we handed the debut Gold Coast Suns outfit it's still a tad early to go into the stingy defense and offensive firepower.

The two games surrounding our bye (St Kilda and Geelong) will tell more of a complete story than right now. Not to say that I am not impressed as I very much am.

I do have one query, however. How many times since our premiership season in 1995 have we played @ Sydney followed by Vs St. Kilda?

i cant think of any offhand. I do recall they were the only two matches we lost that year though.

But despite all this evidence, we have to have threads asking if we have improved.

Great info, Wookie.

Should put to bed all the Carazzo haters with regards to the clanger situation. Yes, he has some clangers, but, hey, he's got some pretty good company.

Anyone else surprised by Hampson's contested marks numbers. Warnock probably is.

not sure the positives are there for carazzo that you think there are. Yes he's good for tackles, but top for clangers, and top 3 for uncontested possessions. He also gives away a lot of frees.

I think theres a few people surprised by hampsons marking stat. It does go to show how badly we've missed marking forwards though.

Carrots has allowed his disposal to deteriorate again. If the clangers were coming with outstanding contested possession figures then it would make sense but the cold hard fact is that they're not.

With those numbers you can't play him down back for fear that you're going to turn the ball over in a dangerous part of the field and you can't have him dominating the ball in the guts for similar reasons. Perhaps his best bet is to play as a defensive forward. Regardless, he's quickly going to become one of those players who is under the pump to retain his place in the side.

Not really. He is a big unit, and in the first few games seemed to be clunking them well, before he started running under the drop of the ball. IF........and I really mean IF, he ever gets all of his game together he could be the difference. I can't think of many defenders that could match Hammer for pace and height.

Just on the marking numbers though, I don't know how they stack up across other teams, but i wouldn't have thought Waite or Hampson would be "up there" in terms of numbers.

Unfortunately we're a poor contested marking team, going on stats alone. To be honest i think its not necessarily that we're full of players who aren't great marks, more a product of where we're kicking the ball. How often do you see us bombing the ball into a pack of 4-6 players where it is extremely hard for anyone to take a grab? I see it often. The reason why Cloke & Dawes get so many is because Collingwood are able to get them one out time and time again where they can use their strength to take the grab. Its a contested mark whether its one opponent or 5 opponents.

Forwardline entries are too often right on top of our forwards heads which makes it exponentially easier for opposition defences to kill. Need to at least give our forwards a chance to run and jump at the ball.

I think our tackling stats are more impressive than our scoring stats. ..

Take out the Suns game and the stats look less friendly for our attack. ..

Big Edit: Scratch that, I grabbed the wrong figures. ..

Carlton 3rd in average For (100) and 4th in average Against (77)

However we have played GCS. ..

Further Edit:

Taking out the GCS figures for all teams that have played them. ..

Carlton is 10th in average For (85.8) and 6th in scores Against (83)

I would say from this, our defence is better than our offence but its early doors. ..

To put that in perspective the four teams either side of us on the ladder are

Geelong (For: 91.0 Against: 64) and Collingwood (For: 133.0 Against: 75.4)

Fremantle (For: 92.6 Against: 85.2) and Essendon* (For: 99.6 Against: 82.2)

*With the GCS result removed

Oh and the teams above us in For are:

Collingwood Magpies
Essendon Bombers
Hawthorn Hawks
North Melbourne Kangaroos
West Coast Eagles
Richmond Tigers

Fremantle Dockers
Geelong Cats
Western Bulldogs

19 disposals, 11 contested possessions, 9 tackles, 2 clangers in the wet against Sydney. Disgusting Carrots, lift your game.

He plays a run with role on players who often aren't in contested areas of the ground (eg Stanton), so how the hell can you expect him to pluck contested possies from thin air? If he's running with his player, is he supposed to go burrowing into packs and lose track of him? Think about it.

17 of those 22 clangers were from the first 3 weeks which just isn't good enough from an AFL level player. 8 alone in the Collingwood game which says he just wasn't up to the pressure they were supplying.

In his past 3 weeks he has committed 5 clangers in total, while averaging around 22 possies per game. For some reason or another he may have just been rusty to start the season, but in the past 3 weeks he's cleaned up his act in a great way, don't be shy to admit those good things and improvements in players performances.

I agree with everything you have said, but I also think our forwards aren't (and haven't been for a while) very good "off the ball" in getting separation from their opponent.

All over the ground at times our players don't work hard enough presenting. Watch Collingwood from dead ball situations, a player will lead, if its not honored he will get out of that space for someone else to lead into. Then that player will lead again if the ball hasn't reached his part of the field yet. Its all about in out, in out, constant motion. Its the exact sort of thing that is taught in soccer.

Too often i see Blues players lead, then stop dead with their arms in the air hoping its kicked to them.

Just a quick note, for people who are unaware a free kick against is counted as a clanger. So in the game carrazzo had 8 clangers against the pies, i beleive 6 of these were frees against. So his disposal was probably ok.

Also explains why Waite is second on the list for clangers as he loves to give frees away, lol.

Agree with this. Work to be done here, especially creating space for one another. If it can be fixed even to just a couple of extra goals a game it would make a big difference.

I know we aren't doing all too well offensively... but I wonder where we rank for Inside 50s and scoring shots... I'm guess toward the top couple of spots on the ladder...

another thing I would love to find out... the tackle number of 106 from last week... would this be the greatest number of tackles we have applied in our history in a single game?

Same question goes for contest disposals?
