Is the determining factor of 'use like a console' having a locked in OS? :S

I have no idea what you mean.

Does this mean I can play solitaire on my tv.

Interesting. If that is the case and I can use it as a console then I would be very tempted to buy one.

It's basically a PC for Dummies. Instead of running something like Windows it just boots into a pretty front-end with simple menus you can navigate with your controller, which lets you play anything you buy through Steam.

I reckon I'll try building my own with a test build if I ever get around to replacing my media centre PC.

I don't need it connected to a pc?

I'm liking the premise.

Like dav3 said, it will have it's own little front end menu and stuff without all the regular Windows (for example) features.

Pretty much just like what the current consoles are, PCs without the freedom.

Worthwhile for someone that wouldn't mind playing PC games but doesn't want to use a PC?

You're exactly who this is for. But be warned, Steam boxes run SteamOS, which has a very limited amount of games ATM, see all SteamOS game listed here: http://store.steampowered.com/search/?os=linux&category1=998

You may want to wait a year or so to see if developers begin to support it or not. Or you can just install Windows on your machine and just launch Steam through there.
