........good stuff yesterday son. Just thought id give out some kudos to ANOTHER key postion defender. Never thought the day would come when i could say that.

And.............kudos to brad miller, having a better year than any of us could have hoped for i would say.

Yeah martin did look good yesterday, and Miller has always had the ability but he was never left to be settled in one position now that he is left up forward he is kicking goals.

Funny about that, isn't it?

I'm convinced Daniher played a massive part in Miller taking so long to develop into a half-decent player. Judging by how he handles himself on and off the field, I get the feeling that he really wants a leadership role as well.

Reminds me of Jared Rivers a little when he plays, clean grabs, good smart delivery by hand or foot. Big and strong also, beat Mitch Hahn (one of the stronger players in the AFL). Hopefully injury-free as well.

Amazing that the backline is now 'better' than the forward line, a complete reversal of most of the past decade.

Thought he was excellent in the contest.

You're right about the backline - of course it could all go wrong at any minute (remember when we thought Carroll was going to be All-Australian?) but for the moment they're our shining light. Can you give a "most improved" award to an entire line?

Yeah, he was impressive yesterday. He looks like a great find for the club. In fact, most of the backline have been good finds this year. CJ seems to be developing well too.

Miller was v. good yesterday, and is starting to string some impressive performances together. Its clear he plays best up forward and I think he could be a real star up there when the club's overall performance is enhanced.

Dunstall gave him big wraps too, actually said we had a pretty good looking tall backline for years to come.

Martin has great closing speed, and was at every contest his opponent was, great leap too..

Only slight on his game is he is a bit fumbly when the ball is on the ground, but with time that will get better.

Stef's progress has been ridiculous.

I mean the kid is a monster yet he could still fill out further and has pretty bloody good mobility for a guy who is around 199cm.

I thought he was fantastic on the weekend, He was good in the contest and he used the ball very well when he had it(19 disposials and 89% efficency). We finally have some talent down back to get excited about.:D:thumbsu:

I am so ####ing pumped about our defence! That is what makes premiership winning teams, and if we can get a star forward soon... there is light at the end of the tunnel :)

Absolute star yesterday
just wondering what jared rivers role will be when he comes back seeing that martin garland and warnock are developing as great key defenders.
can he become a forward??

hahahha when i first came i told ya to relax about miller, and even chris johnson mwhahaha all coming to pass, just call me nostradamus... or however you spell my new name :)

You have to hand it to Bailey. He is building a bloody nice backline. Now the rest of the plebs forward of the defensive 50 have to pick up the pace. :D

At the start of the year Rivers and Whelan were our only experienced and quality defenders and they have battled injury, someone had to stand up and they have. I don't think we should get too carried away about our defenders, nor should we be too disappointed about our forwards. We have found Wonaeamirri and together with Davey we have a promising small forward department. Bate has backed up a great season with a solid year and Miller has improved in leaps and bounds. The position we are missing is a goal kicking full forward, and Newton now gets his chance to show his worth, and I wouldn't mind giving Garland a run of games forward at the end of the year to see what he can do. I'm blabbing on, but I'm a bit excited about the next few years, especially after how horrible last year was.

Fingers crossed rivers is right to go next year. Assuming martin keeps progressing the way he is is there a chance we could play up forward (next year) as we do not really need 4 guys over 6'3 in our backline?

Bate, Sylvia and Miller are tallish players but are more lead up forwards could rivers be an option as the tall forward? It may be worth trying in the pre season next year.

gets me nervous thinking about changes such as this master. Its taken miller 4 years to get over this switch around stuff from foward to back, just dont want this to happen to garland as he is playing so well in defense at the moment.

Lets not worry about having too many good players for the moment and just hope they all continue to develop. Any one of Garland/Martin/Warnock could drop off by the end of the year and suddenly this 'awesome depth' will be gone.

Anyone remember Grgic's game against Collingwood early in his career? He would have been talked up here as our CHF for the next 10 years after that performance.

Exactly. I remember when Miller and Ferguson tore Richmond a new arseh*le in a 2003 pre-season match; we thought we found our next defence. We thought Nick Smith would be a monster up forward. We thought Carroll would go on and repeat his great 2006 season. We thought Grgic would be the next Garry Lyon.

I remember that game, it was in '98 prior to when we had QB games against the Pies. He earned his 1 solitary career Brownlow medal vote in that game and we won by 3 or 4 points

Could he possibly be the worst melbourne player to ever earn a brownlow vote?

Has Juice Newton got any yet?
