to me this guy doesn't get enough kudos on this board. i think he is the best talent scout in the whole afl by a fair margin he gets nobodys that turn into somebodys. the only mistake his made is drafting tenace which is a pretty good stirke rate and i think the club should sign him on another 5 years. without him we wouldn't be as successful as we are today.

Well, to be honest, I never knew who he was until I read your little wall of text.
But yeah, kudos to the guy.

For sure! a true gun recruiter. Although he has also made his far share of blunders.

Joel McKay??
But seriously, the guy is a gun. Although the Port guy wouldn't be far behind!

That was a pretty ordinary draft - there's nobody much picked after him that you'd cry over - Amon Buchanan perhaps. But we got Blake third round.

Tenace had ability, look at his first season. His failure can be laid at the feet of the coaches not the recruiter. His kicking and decision making, has gone backwards at Geelong.

Wells has a good record in a tough caper, I was a critic, but would have to say he has proved me wrong. Take away the Father-Sons and it looks a little different, mind.

The point of the thread was that he did not receive much recognition on this board and that is probably so. However, most people know of him and his recruiting skill. His policy, I'm told, is one of balancing the talent of kids with their likelihood of fitting in and staying with Geelong FC. It has been mentioned before that we look at the local Geelong region , country kids, a number from S.A. who are not going to be dazzled by the bright lights of Melbourne - they won't find them in Geelong! Melbourne and Adelaide are very different backgrounds when looking at the problem of adjusting. This doesn't exclude Metro players but Wells is astute and avoids the prospective Casino boys. (This is hearsay from a club official - and it makes sense to me) Gets a good mix and balance.

Tenace can only blame himself. He can join the David Clarke, Spriggs club of underachieving, hacky kicking athletes.

I have still got a letter from Stephen Wells from when i was cut form the Geelong U15 team back in the early 90's on the last cut mind you.

It said he would still be taking a keen interest in my footballing career in the future.

Suffice to say i never saw nor heard from him again.

He might still be taking a keen interest in your 'footballing career' though!!!

I'd say Geelong and Port Adelaide would have the best recruiting networks, with West Coast and Collingwood just behind.

Since Thompson arrived at the club, with the picks we've had besides the obvious father / sons, I think we've done argubly as well as any other club.

Hopefully that continues, although I know one of our recruiters left to replace John Beveridge as the Recruiting Manager at St. Kilda, hopefully that doesn't impact us too much.
