When people get arrested it can be made public knowledge. Someone from all media publications would have the responsibility to contact the police every day to see who's been arrested and if anything interesting has arose.

Once you find out about the people arrested and where, contact the location (hence Home House), get a few stories from witnesses (there would have been many when this happened, even sober people).

Word spreads quickly.

I don't think the police can reveal names of people arrested (or in this case only cautioned?). Though of course since Adam was a boy reporters have slipped a few bucks to a compliant copper for juicy tidbits.

How do these things actually get out into the media?

Not sure, but Geelong are usually superb at covering up players indiscretions.

Steve Johnson aside it would appear on the surface that our club has less of these incidents than any other club in the league, however the reality is that we're just better at hiding them.

BTW - Phat - back on the bandwagon I see.

:D

As i told you before Hoggoir, i've never been off, just excited about our return to the bigtime and the chance to actually see us play for a change.

Besides, i've got a brick with my name on it at Upton Park, have you? ;)

$1000 fines and had to face the media. Was that enough??

I was thinking of a $5000 fine. No suspension, because then you hurt the team not the player.

I would have suspended both for a week to go along with the fine.

Thompson made the same point about a suspension penalising the other players and the members, but as one of those members i think a suspension was fitting, especially in Johnson's case.

Thompson said both have learnt their lesson, but he said the same each time Dog has ********ed up.

Phat

According to your strict moderators license, as of last week I thought we were unable to talk about off the ground not football incidents. Have you forgotten or just relaxed the rules when it suits.

Jack , I think Phat said basically if any "incident" was confirmed and was no longer the fodder for the rumour mill, it would be open for discussion. The point is lets talk anout factual occurance's, not 15 different versions of any story that has no-fall back basis to an attributable account

Exactly Turbo.

We've had non-football topics on this board since it started without a problem, the problem arises when unsubstansiated and defamatory rumours are posted.

If the rumour that sparked all this is confirmed by the club or parties allegedly involved, there wouldn't be a problem discussing it on this board.

All this has been discussed ad-infinitum, so i'll cut to the punch for you Jack.

You've been informed of our approach and the reasons for it, so you can either abide by the rules and guidelines the owners of the site set down (and the interpretation of them from moderators) or go elsewhere. The choice is entirely yours.

The issue is dead so this is the absolute last time i'll comment on it.

Listening to both Johnson and Mackie, say they are sorry etc. and both want to do their best for the club.
So can I presume that Mr Johnson is now off the smokes and Mr Mackie will eat and sleep in the gym over summer.

Look , Im no white laced wowser and as far as i'm concerend , to a degree what happens off the ground stays there but if what happens off the ground effects the on ground stuff then that is a different situation.Truth or not , both these guys have now set in concrete what some will think about them and the only thing that will change that is on ground and OFF ground performance.
Johnson MUST now go above and beyond. He must be the absolute bechmark for every new kid to follow... , doing the right thing.I'd like him to have a look at sombody like Sando and dial in that type of work ethic,he started slow but got the most out himself.
Mackie must relise that he has failed to live up to what people expect, yes it was his 21st , yes we have all been there but IF you put your hand up and nominate for the draft then just like so many other occupations a higher expectation on behavior comes to bare. They are being paid to perfom and to maximize their chance's by doing the right thing.

I don't know much about Mackie's commitment or otherwise, but very fair comment about Dog.

He's had a lot of chances, now is the time to put his head down and repay the faith.

We're all human and i know i had my wild times when i was 18-19, but there are only so many chances you can give a bloke.

This is the first time i've heard of any such behaviour from Mackie so i'm willing to put it down to a kid making a mistake like we all do, but in Dog's case he's done it too often for it be excused so readily.

He has a lot of work to do, both on and off the field. I sincerely hope this is the catalyst for him to change his attitude, because otherwise we're going to be denied a super talent and he's going to deny himself the chance to be great.

Wouldn't need to slip the cops any cash...
The cops reporter would have a good daily relationship with the Geelong police. The cops would have just told them about the incident, and when questioned further on why they were telling the reporter about such a small incident that would not ordinarily be reported on, coyly advised them to contact GFC. No cash needed - they want the story out there, it shows they're not soft on people no matter what they do or how many people know who they are.

The club issued a media release on the incident as soon as it had been inaccurately reported, clarifying that there had been no actual fight or locking up, etc. They aren't going to promote the incident unless they know it's going to get out anyway, or if they know it already has.

Continuing that rich vein of logic, let's encourage the whole team to hit the booze and start a brawl. I mean, hell, all we need is to see some effort and we're all satisfied. Screw everything else.

That wouldnt be a hint of sarcasm i detect there would it?

In no way was i excusing what they have done....

How far is Mackie from breaking into the team anyway?

What a disgrace a $1000 fine is.

How much more trouble can a player get into than being locked up? What do they have to do to get the maximum fine?

Agree with whoever on the first page said that Mackie would have been trade bait anyway. IMO, there's no room for both him and Charlie.

well if there is room for one of them it'd be mackie wouldn't it??

guys, don't let something like this make you think any less of mackie the footballer - he will make it.

Am I disappointed? Not particularly.

So they stayed out late and had a couple of extra beers.

For Mackie it was his 21st and his brother was in town. He is out injured and his season is pretty over anyway.

For SJ, yeah he is a repeat offender, but unless he is actually developing into a real alcoholic, then I can accept that the same make-up that goes into making SJ the party boy is also the same make up that goes into making dog the freak footballer that he is.

And Lamby's barfly Ling is not exactly the greatest role model in this regard.

Can anyone give us a quick update on both offenders contract status. I thought SJ was unsigned but then heard Bartel was the only one unsigned. Confused?? and this may have an impact on how the issue gets handled in the long term...

I feel a little bit of compassion for the two guys.

They are both young, it was Mackie's 21st and they were out at a hotel.

The way the club paraded them in front of the media like they were criminals was a little bit harsh in my opinion.
