Shame really seeing as he looks like he'll get weeks for the trip. I didn't see it at the ground, but it was on the news and looked pretty bad.

Johnson needs a rest

I tired pf watching this guy playing for free kicks and not chasing hard, he looks sore and unfit. I would give him a break or a couple of weeks in the two's.

Re: Johnson needs a rest

Whenever he goes near the ball these days I cringe, you just know he's either gonna be pinned for holding the ball, or his opponet gets off him too easily and kills us on the rebound.

Before his injury last year, I would want him near the ball as he would turn something into nothing, and was one of the better players in the game.

he's clearly struggling ATM, and it's doing us more harm than good to keep playing him.

Re: Johnson needs a rest

Cant argue there. Despite the goals last week, i thought he was fairly ordinary as well. Looks slow, unfit and sore. And continues to go to ground every time he is touched. Surely this has to have been addressed by now?

Re: Johnson needs a rest

Currenty a liability.

I'm over the anger I felt since early in the second qtr, so this isn't a reaction to a loss.

The way we played against Port anyone in SJ's position would have kicked his goals.

He has really struggled all year. Needs to either rest up or play some two's to get back to the old SJ

I actually want him to get booked for staging, it will b a wake up call he needs

Re: Johnson needs a rest

Yes last week he did kick 5 or 6, but that was a pretty easy game, when things get hard he is not the same, i hate to say it but remember this post, Steve Johnson will get done for stagging in the last 10 minutes of the game today. He will be the first player to be fined. But saying this i think it will only help his game for the future.

Re: Johnson needs a rest

I don't know what the story is. I know he didn't have much of preseason but he needs to do something. I'd give him a 15 week break if I thought it would help his game for the finals. He's really important, one of the most important players, and we need him out there for the business end of the season.

Often goes to ground when not touched too. If he was a first year player he'd have been out two weeks ago. Obviously he's got the runs on the board but with Mitch Duncan, Varcoe, Stokes etc waiting in the wings he'd want to turn his game around - I don't really mind that he isn't playing well, but he doesn't even look like he's playing the team game.

Re: Johnson needs a rest

Agree with everything everyone has said.

Not sure whether injury is the cause though, but if it is, it should be handled. He is so important to our crack at the finals this year.

We played a shit game, let's leave it at that and move on.

Re: Johnson needs a rest

I know a few people who have had similar operations, and they've struggled up to a year after the surgery. Not so much debilitating problems, but they've had big issues with pain around the site of surgery and in and around the hipflexor area. I imagine that Stevie J is struggling to pull up each week.

I've been saying this stuff for years about Stevie J. So many of my fellow cat fans get swept up in the occasional flashy soccer goal or clever snap and forget that he's one of the slowest and laziest players on our entire squad.

He's a massive diver and down hill skier. I loved it when Judd nailed him in that last quarter after he attempted another hot dog move side step.

What else was he meant to do trapped on the boundary? Ling was there and didn't shepherd Judd off the play, nor did he given an option. What do you expect Johnson to do there?

Thought that too - absolutely Ling's fault on that one, laid a lazy shepherd and Judd brushed him aside.

I agree the sheppard was non-existent. But you and I both know that he would've managed to second guess himself and botch it up, I could put together a highlight package of nearly 100s of scenarios where SJ tries to side-step and fake opponents only to get sacked (holding the ball) or kick it to the opposition/nobody.

I could find hundreds where he has avoided the tackle and either kicked or set up a goal, too.

Is getting caught wrong, though? It might not be the best outcome, but I don't think it is wrong on face value. If that is the only option you have, or the best percentage play, you are crazy not to take someone on. What else could he have done?

Getting caught isn't always wrong, everyone gets caught at one stage or another. Thats footy.

But he almost always gets caught, he doesn't have the strength nor the speed to evade would be tacklers (eg. Ablett, Chapman).

So why he continually tries to take defenders on frustrates me and other I'm sure other supporters.

Especially after we rebound strongly from defence and then the ball hits his chest, now instead of moving it on quickly, he'll stop as if to pretend to take a set shot.....try and play on, realise he's dummy won't work and he'll get caught or desperetely get rid of the ball whilst he's getting tackled, thus resulting in a turn-over..That is f#%king stupid, and he does it all the time. As much as you won't admit it, I bet you (as an educated fan) can recall more than a few of those scenarios.

I agree with Byron, I'll put up with it when he's fit and firing because it comes off a bit more and he's damaging.

Right now though he's trying to much and is neither strong enough or quick enough to pull it off. He needs to either go back to the basic or back to the two's and gain some fitness/strength.

Right now he's a liability. I'd rather Duncan than the Johsnon at 50% we have at the moment.

i think Bomber needs to take away his licence to do whatever he wants...and get him back to playing basic football..... you very rarely see Steve lead up and hes often pointing over his shoulder wanting to run into a place kick and hopeful into an open goal...hes got amazing talent..and there is probably non better on his day.

Firstly, this post is not biased as I believe it stands for most of the forward line yesterday.

I think if Johnson was sitting in Carlton's forwardline he would have kicked six or more.

Their delivery was quick, direct and accurate. They honoured leads and it made the job of the forwards easy.

Meanwhile Geelong was awful in the centre. At half time the entries inside 50 read 29 to 19 in favour of Carlton. Geelong had 12 shots from those 19 entries (not entirely accurate, but a pretty good return rate of shots).

Johnson may not have been at his absolute best yesterday, nor Mooney or Hawkins, however this was not where the game was lost. There is only so much these blokes can do when the ball is coming in irregularly and at their feet or way over their heads on the lead, so that they have to wait underneath it and are spoiled from behind.

Then when Johnson does get a half chance in the pocket up against the boundary line and tries to do something, while the captain doesn't shepherd or give an option, you bag him.

Ridiculous.

I didn't mean you specifically BDP, moreso you (plural). The criticism of the forward line is perhaps warranted in regards to their lack of pressure when Carlton moved the ball out of their backline, however we lost today because we got smacked in the guts and couldn't hit a target inside 50 to save ourselves.
