From today's Herald Sun:

STEVEN Motlop had his shoulder in a sling yesterday, which was a good thing, as there were plenty of back slappers at Darwin's Wanderers Football Club.
Motlop said he lost count of the handshakes and the well-dones as the Darwin football fraternity joined in the celebrations for its latest AFL star on the rise.
Motlop is the teenage brother of former Melbourne player Shannon and Port Adelaide's Daniel .

A cousin, Marlon Motlop, is also on Port Adelaide's list.
He said he would have liked the opportunity to have been at the same club as Daniel but said he had heard a lot about Geelong.
"It's a lot like Darwin, a big country town," he said.
Geelong recruiting manager Stephen Wells said the Cats were thrilled to have drafted Steven.
"He's an instinctive, exciting player, a dead ringer for Daniel at the same age," Wells said.
"Obviously, having the Motlop name helps, but we were all very impressed by the way Steven presented himself to us.
"He has a real passion for the game. You can see it in his eyes and the way he conducts himself."
Motlop said it had always been his dream to play in the AFL, and though he had come from outside the traditional system, he had played several times in Melbourne as part of the Northern Territory Thunder under-16 and under-18 teams.
Wells said Motlop could easily have been drafted higher than No. 39 but for having a shoulder injury at the time of the national championships.
He said it was too early to tell if the Cats had unearthed a player with the ability of a Cyril Rioli, who helped Hawthorn to this year's flag, but Motlop's skill around goal had to be seen to be believed.
"It would have been good to have the opportunity to play with my brother," Motlop said.
"But, in the end, I was happy to go anywhere. It's terrific for me."
Motlop has been playing competitive football since he was 10 and said seeing his brothers make the grade had always given him extra incentive to join them

There was also a great photo with the article of Steven in a GFC jumper, but sadly they've not put it online as yet.

I love watching his brother, Daniel, play. One of the most exciting and skilled players in the league. Can make the near impossible look easy.
I really hope Steven can conjure the same sort of magic. It'll certain give Varcoe and Djerrkura a kick up the bum. Theres plenty of competition now for that small creative forward position.
We desperately need someone like Daniel Motlop. And you wont get much closer than his brother.

Both Varcoe and Djerrkura have had injury issues to overcome. Varcoe may have had some attitude problems mas well but I've never heard of anything similar regarding Djerrkura.

I just love those Aboriginal silky skills, looking forward to seeing all the aboriginal lads in the team playing well. Motlop is going to go nicely if he gives it his all.

Seems from what everyone is saying, Motlop is like Varcoe and Djekkura, i doubt all three or even 2 of them will play in the on team. So there will be some hot competition between those three to get into the team.

I hope Varcoe can develop, had some good games last year...Djekkura and Motlop will be hot on his heels so that is healthy for the team

Steve is a very good footballer, you wont be dissapointed with him.

He will take a while though, he had a shoulder reco not long ago and will get the other one operated on soon so that pretty much rules out alot of gym work.

Why does everyone assume Djerrkura is contending for the small forward position? Is it because he's Aboriginal, and therefore by definition thats the position he should be playing?

If you actually watch him play, his strengths are his pace, his hardness at the ball and his tackling. He is not particularly creative around goal, and he doesn't seem to have the innate goalkicking instincts of a Steve Johnson, a Varcoe or a Motlop. That means he is probably best suited as an inside mid or a small defender, NOT a small forward.

Well, there was that goal against Port in the NAB Cup - one handed pickup in the wet at full tilt. Likewise he was pulling some crazy stuff in the next game against Brisbane...agree though, his hardness at the ball and body shape would make him a way better mid/small defender.

Yes...they're all Aboriginal. I can't speak for Motlop but Djerrkura and Varcoe are completely different players.

Like Reg, it annoys me that people just assume Jerka is a small forward when he's actually a running half back. Maybe people should actually watch him play.

Cats take Motlop in draft

EXCITED: Geelong draft pick Steven Motlop with his dad Eddie. Picture: NICK WELSH

WHEN Steven Motlop got phone calls from Geelong stars Jimmy Bartel, Gary Ablett Jr and captain Tom Harley he knew he was in the big time.

The 17-year-old former Wanderers and Thunder midfielder was the Territory's only pick in yesterday's AFL Draft.

Geelong recruiting manager Stephen Wells called Motlop's name out at pick No. 39, making him the third brother from the Darwin football family to make it to an AFL club.

Older brothers Shannon (North Melbourne and Melbourne) and Daniel (North Melbourne and Port Adelaide) have already reached the pinnacle.

"It will be a hard side to get into, but all I'm concentrating on now is getting my body and shoulders right," an ecstatic Motlop said.

"It would have been good to go to Port Adelaide with my brother Daniel and cousin Marlon, but just to get a chance at AFL football is great for me."

Wells said Motlop's football heritage and great natural ability made him a worthy pick.

"It's a great result for us to get Steven," Wells said last night.

"He's a long-term prospect just like any other player who comes to this club and we're treating him exactly like that."

Motlop's proud dad Eddie will have to divide his loyalties between Geelong and Port Adelaide from next season.

"I'll be following both of my sons very closely," he said.

"Steven will be a success down there once he gets his shoulders right, he's probably a more direct player than Daniel when he gets the ball. Daniel will try and beat four or five players but Steven will take the first or second option."

Motlop was not totally surprised when his name was called after some phone calls from Geelong two days beforehand.

And while the Ablett and Bartel phone calls were exciting, another voice on the other end of the phone also made Motlop sit up and take notice.

"I spoke to (coach) 'Bomber' Thompson half an hour ago and he said he was happy to get me down there," he said.

I agree that Djerrkura is not a small forward but also add that Varcoe is also not a small forward. He has just been filling in there as we didn't have a genuine small forward. Varcoe has played most of his footy as a midfielder and looks better for the cats when up the ground a bit and using his run. His delivery into the 50 is also generally good. Stokes probably fits the small forward role a bit more but even he played a lot of the 1/2 back in the sanfl as well as some time in the midfield.

Great post. Spot on.

FWIW, Djerkurra will be used as a running defender role like Wojak. Varcoe will be a Wells type midfielder, while stokes and motlop will be the small forwards. It will be interesting to see Stokes and Motlop compete for a position in the team. But I dare say Motty is a good 2-3 years away. He will get broken in half in the VFL.

I've been saying it for 2 years...Djerkurra should be and has all the attributes to becoming the next Wirrapunda.

Disposal probably isn't as accurate. He's always reminded me a bit of Byron Pickett with a bit of David Wojcinski. Either way I've been excited about him for a couple of years now and I really want to see him play AFL in a Geelong jumper.

Great attitude as well.

Apparently he's had a growth spurt too. When he was drafted I had serious reservations about him playing in the backline due to his height (176cm I think). Now he is listed at 186!
