CARLTON assistant coach Mark Riley says out-of-favour midfielder Nick Stevens may be recalled to the side for Friday night’s pivotal clash with Collingwood.

Stevens spent the last two weeks playing for the Northern Bullants in the VFL since being dropped by the Blues after round 13.

But Friday night’s clash could be season defining for the Blues, who have won their past three matches. A win against the 4th-placed Magpies would see Carlton leapfrog into 4th spot, at least for the time being.

But a Pies win would give the black and whites’ top-four aspirations a massive boost and put the Blues back in the danger zone as far as making the top eight is concerned.

“We’ve got a few selection queries and issues to address. [Stevens] trained this morning and he is under consideration. We know Nick’s best is very good and we’re all working to get him back to his very best,” Riley said.

Stevens had just 12 touches in last week’s game for the Bullants but Riley said VFL form could be misleading

“Without being too detrimental to the VFL, sometimes it can become scrappy and packy and when you are a profile AFL player you come back and get sat on all day,” he said.”

“He worked reasonably hard last week. I wouldn’t say he had his greatest game. At times, the higher the level you play, the more skilled players that play around you, sometimes your performance is better.”

While Riley would not commit to selecting Stevens for the Magpies clash, he spoke glowingly of Richard Hadley who was among the best for the Bullants last week. Riley said Hadley would be considered with the conditions expected to be soggy.

“Richard was super. He has just carried himself enormously well around our club. Trained hard, played very hard, endeavoured to do the things we’ve asked of him,” Riley said.

“He marked the ball at both ends of the ground, he won the ball inside he spread well. He certainly is putting his name up there in consideration. In horsing parlance he’s not a bad wet-tracker is he?”

The Blues are taking on a top four team in front of what should be a huge crowd but Riley would not be drawn on whether the experience would be ideal preparation for a potential finals campaign.

“We felt a month and a half ago we may have taken our eye off the ball looking too far long-term. Since we’ve narrowed our focus we haven’t played great football with probably the exception being the second half last week,” he said.

“We’ve got the job done and we’ve grinded out a couple of wins. We’re very narrow focussed at the minute.”

OH GOOD.

i doubt he'll make it, if anything hadley would be chosen before him based on riley's comments

in saying that, there a handful of players who would be expected to be dropped, so there could be room for stevens.

This is an excellent point and one which I made in the Bullants thread. It was the same thing for Houlihan. Both Stevens and Hoops are outside players and their style of play isn't going to adapt particularly well to a much tighter tag than what they're used to, particularly when you factor in the much lower skill level in the seconds.

Few things:

  • if he doesn't get picked he'll have officially got the message (3 games in the magoos for the VC)
  • if he does and plays shit, Ratts will be baked (soft)
  • if he does and plays a blinder, he will be baked (just lazy)
Like it or not, Stevo has become the club's barometer for how serious it takes issues regarding culture, fitness and commitment to excellence.

Great news as Stevo is in our best players, so it would be a real positve if Ratts can see beyond a poor game in the VFL and pick a guy we need up and firing.

If Stevo can find form we become a drastically better side.

C'mon stevo bud I love u

great chat boss.

couldn't of put it better myself.

I would so rather put in a Robinson or hadley, someone that will actually play for the jumper they are wearing.... which i dont think stevens has this year at all...

**** off, I don't want him back in the side until he earns it.

As much as I applaud the MC for dropping him, bringing him back just because the opposition is better than the previous 3 kind of makes a mockery of dropping him in the first place.

The line about the VFL being scrappy is bullshit, if you're a class player you perform anywhere no matter opponent or conditions.

One more week wont do him any harm

Reading between the lines here this reads:

"Hadley will be in the side named tonight."

"Stevens however will be spending another week in the Ants. However lets give him some encouragement and positive reinforcement so he doesnt drop his bundle completely. Hopefully he gets the message, plays a blinder, does whats asked of him and he'll get a game next week."

:thumbsu: His attitude was an absolute disgrace on Sunday and for a VC fighting (waiting) for a spot back in the team thats not okay.

12 possesions at VFL level in no way warrants a return to AFL level... he should almost be dropped to the 2's at the Bullants!!

The lesser the standard the easier to get a kick!!

Stevens had an absolute shocker against the Bombers - the majority of his posessions resulted in a turn over and shot on goal Im sure...

How long do we keep him out? Are games in the reserves really doing him any good, or was dropping him for more than 1 game enough to get the message through? Does having a 'blinder' in the reserves really mean anything...

Hard to answer those questions - Stevens is in our best 22 and perhaps that is all that matters.

His confidence won't build the longer he is out - might be time to give him that last chance. We won't know what effect dropping him has had until he plays senior footy again - bring him back and his future will be pretty much clear after 1 game.

People should take into account Stevens always plays well against the Fagpies, usually is in our top 3 or 4 players the last few occassions we have played Collingwood.

Just puttin him to give Collngwood a first hand look at him before trade week.

A blinder and we might be able to get pick 70 + Corrie for him.

Nah i love Stevo. Hope he plays, and plays well.
