Interesting hypothetical.

You're in a burning room or some other similar situation and in it happen to be a beloved pet, a complete stranger and a briefcase containing $250k cash.

You, however, can only leave the room with two. The stranger is conscious and knows you're in the room but is obstructed from leaving without your help. No-one else will know which which options you choose. $250k is life-changing money for you.

Which two do you choose and why?

Edit: can we make the poll private instead?

Poll is now private

Depends on who the stranger is.

If its a child, young attractive women or quality human I take them, if its say for example a 40yo male criminal I dont.

I would take the money and person most likely but as stated, if its a bad person the pet comes out with me.

Let's assume that the stranger is a 30 year old female of average attractiveness.

Other than that you know nothing else about them and do not have time to form a judgement as to their character. You will also get no credit or recognition for saving the stranger. You are faced with a simple decision whether to save their life at the expense of either the money or your beloved pet.

.......

For anyone who has already answered, does your decision change if there are suddenly 2 x $250k briefcases?

Never had a pet or loved an animal. Give me the money and the stranger.

The person and the money in that order.

Why?

Pets are an absurd western luxury.

I'm guessing getting the stranger to carry out the money for you whilst you carry the stranger and the pet is out of the question? ;)

In any case, how old is the pet? If it's like a 12yr old dog and on its last legs, I'd consider the stranger + $$$. If not, it'd be the pet and stranger for me.

Let's assume the pet is 1/3 of the way through its life expectancy.

Is anyone going for the 2 x $250k if it was available instead of the stranger or the pet?

Stranger and money. I am pretty convinced that I own the coolest budgie that has ever existed, but I don't value his life (he's 9) over another human's and well, $250k...yeah. In terms of dogs/cats, I've never had one, so I have no emotional attachment, I don't even like them very much.

Pet and money. My cat will not tell the police I took the money...

PS Well, and I always tought stranger means I don't know yet if he is a criminal or a quality person...

Mind=blown that people would choose an animal over a human being. And they wonder why we gun each other down in the streets.

I'd stuff the pet into the briefcase with the money, then take the briefcase and the stranger.

Initially i thought yes to the money x2, but there's no way i could live with myself if i chose to let another person die.

Take the money, leave the pet and stranger to burn. I would feel bad leaving the pet if I saved the stranger. So better to let them both go down with no witnesses.

*paitently awaits shitstorm*

It'd be beloved pet and stranger. Though at the moment the only pet is an inherited cat, so it'd be stranger & 250k if that was the choice.

If it'd been my rottie 1/3 of the way through his life definitely pet and stranger.

At what point would it change? One is obviously the amount of money. The second is whether the pet would pass out from the smoke rather than be awake when burning. At $500k I'd sacrifice the pet and donate $100k to animal welfare to save many animals lives to help rationalise it.
