Stringer vs Wines

I know these two are hard to compare, but I was having a discussion with a mate about the 2012 draft, we both agreed that these two are the best from the 2012 draft to date (it's actually a good draft, Macrae, Whitfield, Daniher, Vlastuin, etc), I said most teams would take Stringer over Wines while he was the other way around.

So, which one would you prefer on your team?

I also made the bulldogs/port supporter options so we can see what neutrals think as well as dogs/port people.

Putting the Stringer vs Wines debate aside for one second, I'd think Melbourne need more goal scoring options rather than inside midfielders as such.

Melbournes inside mid stocks are actually quite good (Jones, Vince, Tyson, Viney, Brayshaw) and I'd say Petrecca was drafted as a midfielder in the dangerfield mould rather than a 3rd tall forward in the Stringer mould.

Not to mention I think Gawn is pretty good and has at least 7 seasons in him. Outside class and goal scorers should be Melbournes priority in my view.

There are very few players that even play like Stringer. Jack Darling in form is a pretty close comparison and that's all I can think of. There are a few player like Wines floating around, even a up younger version in Cripps. We have literally 2 avenues to goal which is kinda pathetic and have been drafting inside mids for a while now, including out first pick in the latest draft. I'd say Hogan and Garlett need more help than Jones, Viney, Vince, Tyson, Vandenburg and Brayshaw. Stringer and Hogan together would be an amazing fit as they have completely different skill sets.

Even not on a team needs basis I'd lean toward Stringer, I think he is more dynamic and a match winner.

Petracca is going to be played forward, not midfield. Down the track that may change, but in the short-term he'll be a half-forward.

You can't get enough top notch inside mids. There are inside mids and then there are inside mids.

And yes, we need outside class. Neither in the poll are "outside class", notwithstanding Stringer's pace.

I understand your view and I'd love both, but it's the engine room where we've been crap for so long and I'm still not convinced we have a clearance specialist.

There was a reason Stringer was a top 5 draft pick and there's a reason Petracca is a top 5 draft pick.

You would have been one of the ones last year telling me "Hogan hasn't even played a game". I'm happy in my assessment of what Petracca is going to bring to AFL footy and I'll let you wait to see it before you cast a view.

Darling is probably more of a marking player. Stringer can take the odd pack mark and is quick on the lead but not at Darling's level.

Yeah I totally agree with that actually. Stringer is more dangerous when the ball is on the deck, he is also good on the lead but you wouldn't pop the ball up and wait for Stringer to fly over 3 opponents. It was just the closest comparison I could think of, both very quick and powerful but not traditional type of key forward players.

I think people just assume because Wines is an inside mid, that he's not a match winner like a forward/mid can be.
Wines had 26 disposals (50% contested, 7 clearances, 7 i50s) and 3 goals v Freo in the 2014 Semi going head to head with Fyfe.
He got the 3 votes v Collingwood in round 15 with 33 possessions (17 contested) and 10 tackles.

Don't want to sound like I'm knocking Stringer though, fantastic young player.
I'd take Wines though, absolute contested beast and super consistent from day dot.

Another history lesson. Thanks again. Melbourne's horrid drafting under Barry Prendergast is legendary, but we're very happy with recent outcomes under Taylor. You're probably aware Franklin, Roughead, and Hodge go alright as top 5 draft picks.

Did you see Petracca play in his final 2 years as a junior ? Did you see him train pre knee at Gosch's Paddock ?

Anyone remotely familiar with Petracca knows he's an incredible talent. Simon Goodwin has already stated he's the most talented player at training he's ever seen.

You see it as a stretch to compare Petracca with Stringer, because one has terrific exposed AFL form and the other doesn't. I don't.

Jake Stringers season was great, but looking at his game log he got a lot of his goals against the bad teams in the league. His 5 against WCE is a standout in terms of bags against a good team, and that came a in a complete flogging where he had the 50 to himself.

Expect he'll keep developing but will probably need to push more into the midfield at some stage.

Wines has had a better career so far.

In just saying he needs to perform more consistently against top 8 teams, and the concern is that his combination of power and speed is likely to be less effective against good teams who can game plan for him. I say this as someone who loves him. Think he'd take another step up if boyd comes on like I expect and draws more defenders.

As for "one out all game vs west coast when his team was flogged so don't count that"

Goal 1: pack mark. Not one out.
Goal 2: soccered after a marking contest, not one out.
Goal 3: ran into open goal to make the score 48-47.
Goal 4: marks in goal square opposed to two west coast players.
Goal 5: receives the ball from a backwards hand pass, had opponent goal side but ran around him.


Note the first three goals where when the game was up for grabs, and the only genuine "one out" contest was goal 5 with goal 3 unopposed.

Your game log doesn't mention that when he kicked 6 against the Crows he was subbed off injured in the third quarter. Or that due to injuries he played purely midfield against the Hawks. Or that he did his hamstring after 5 minutes in the final

He had more scoreboard impact against the top 8 teams than anyone. And you're sticking with the he needs to do more against good sides theory?? Bizzare
