It would be interesting analysis to do actually (if anyone had the time...).
Look at the relationship per game between hitouts and clearances. As hitouts goes up, does that mean that clearances tend to go up proportionately? It would also be worth doing with hitouts to advantage as well.
And also looking at the leading clearance teams. Do they also lead the hitouts? I suspect not.
Just a very cursory glance at these stats shows me that two sides Hawthorn and Port won most clearances and forth and sixth respectively in average hitouts per game.
The top side at hitouts being Freo finished 5th so i feel there is a reasonable correlation between winning hitouts and a healthy clearance rate... based on 2014 figures.....
I must add though that sides such as Melb and GWS 3rd and 5th in hitouts won - well it does mean that it's not all about ruck work eh - still it's a fair bet that these sides could make significant strides with healthy ruck work as their mids develop.
