"The Roman Road"

Okay, so it's a lame term I've coined for something I've noticed the team's been doing at times this year.

There's clearly a setup at a centre bounce for the forwardline players to form a straight-line from the edge of the centre square through to the goal square.

Sometimes they break each way, sometimes they don't.

Does anyone know more about this? Do other teams do it?

Clearly it's designed to deconstruct a defensive team's zones, give our players space to lead into at a clearance and obscure the view of the defenders standing behind the others in front of them.

Going Backwards and Centre

Have also noticed this a few times and was frustrating me until I realised what was happening.

When one of our players is caught on the boundary in our forward 50, more and more we are turning away from the goals, back to look for options outside 50 or centre.

My instinct was to instead urge the player to turn towards goal and either go for a low percentage shot or put it at the top of the goalsquare for a Crameri, Ryder or Hurley.

The reality is that often this is not a successful option and places the opposition with a chance to gain possession at the fall of the ball and quickly rebound.

Instead, we are utilising players positioned at the back of the press who have gotten free, and even loose options centre from 30 to 50 out.

The secondary effect is that it encourages the players not to push too high with the press, as they would do if the ball was put to the top of the goalsquare. This is a good thing, considering a hard press was killing us on the rebound last year.

As more of our midfield players are getting maturer bodies and more confident in their kicking, being able to nail goals from 45 to 55 out with the ability to quickly switch to the other side of the 50 arc will be much more beneficial come finals.

Guys like Melksham, Zaka, Jetta, Dempsey and even Heppell can hit them from 50 and it's good to start using these options in a smart way.

Definitely noticed the second one a few times.

One thing I like is that Heppell is lining up loose a kick behind the play at the centre bounce and early in the piece, but is pushing up to be sweeping the contest for the handball back rather than protecting the opposition's quick kick out. So he's becoming an extra option for us in an attacking sense rather than just a defensive protector at the back of the contest. The best of both worlds IMO.

I'm also glad that the tall backs are sweeping the back half of the ground rather than getting involved in the press. Much less vulnerable on the counter as a consequence.

Definitely noticed the first one a few times in the brisbane game.

Haven't noticed it before though, so not sure if it's new or just that i've missed it - has anyone else noticed it in any other games?

The first one is one I've noticed several teams doing here and there for over 10 years. However not sure if this is a consistent ploy for Essendon this year.

Think it is a combination of systems.

WC seem to hold a player back, StKilda doesn't hold a player back, but the last player only comes up to the centre, other teams do a full press up to 70 metres from goal.

Ever since Hird played the extra man in the middle against Carlton instead of manning up their loose defender, both Fremantle and GWS have done it to them. Despite both of them losing, Carlton did not look very impressive and Rattern hasn't really been able to combat it.

Agree with your summary.

Carlton hasn't worked out a way to nullify this tactic.

Ratten fell in love with it after it was so successful against Hurley last year and has used it every game since that I can remember. Just a funny observation of things coming full circle.

**** I'm sick of hearing commentators and coaches using the term structures.

It's the 2012 buzzword.

Either explain what the structures actually are or stfu.

EDIT: To clarify, not directed in any way at OP, just sick of it hearing the term in the media.
2012 buzzword?

It started with Mick Malthouse in 2010, maybe even late 2009.

So naturally every Collingwood player was all over it, and it's grown.

I agree though, it's like "elite"; used either incorrectly or way too often by the general footy public.

I deliberately don't use either word as a result. Shits me.

Also another thing i've noticed is that heppell seems to do a lot of pointing and directing at each centre bounce.

Not sure if this is just when he's lose man, or all the time - havent studied it closer enough.

I notice at each bounce most plays point a small amount to make sure everyone has manned up, but he's actions seem to be a bit more or above what everyone else does.

And it's also when he's at the CHB position.

Anyone else noticed this?

I will be looking at how many forward 50's we concede each week.

Against Brisbane it was 43 - Ultimately need to get this figure below 50.

Conceded 114 Inside 50's against Carlton and Collingwood - A fantastic effort to only concede 22 goals - But this is unsustainable against quality opposition.

Seems a bit now we use Heppell running off the back of the square for centre clearances rather than go fwd so my thinking is the fwds pushing up to the centre square is an indication the hitout will go backwards and off to Heppell if all things go to plan. I guess they can call this prior to the bounce based on opponent positions in the centre.

The second one is a bit hit and miss, seems like we stuff around with the ball and go nowhere more times than hit up someone in a better position.
